MUDGETT died at his home in Garden Grove Saturday, July 3, 1897, aged 84 years. He was born in New Hampshire, July 8, 1818 [sic, should be 1813], and was the son of EDWARD MUDGETT, whose great grandfather took part in the battle of Bunker Hill. He received a fair education, studied law, and was a clerk in the legislature during the winter of 1834-35. In December, 1835, he came west and located at Defiance, Ohio, where he engaged in merchandising and milling. In 1838 he engaged in farming and milling in Paulding County, Ohio, until 1847 when he moved to DeKalb County, Indiana, where he again engaged in farming. In 1853 he moved to Jones County, Iowa, where he became interested in the manufacture of woolen goods. For many years he had taken an active interest in political affairs and frequently became the recipient of official honors. In 1840 he was chosen Judge of Paulding County, Ohio, and two years later was elected a member of the Ohio Legislature. In 1850 he became Judge of DeKalb County, Indiana, and the following year was chosen to the legislature. In 1855 he was elected County Judge of Jones County, Iowa. MAJ. MUDGETT came to High Point Township in 1860. In August, 1861, he raised a company which was mustered into the service as Company L, Third Iowa Cavalry. He became Major of the regiment and served in that capacity until August, 1864, when he resigned and came home on account of ill health. In 1874 he went to California and in company with two of his sons, engaged in the lumber business quite extensively. In 1881 he was chosen a member of the California Legislature. In 1883 he moved to Idaho and four years later returned to Garden Grove where he spent the remaining days of his life. He was married to REBECCA HAYMAKER, March 8, 1838, and to this union were born seven sons and three daughters. Following is a list of his surviving children: R.M. MUDGETT, Uniontown, Washington; EDWARD MUDGETT, Lineville, Iowa; G.C. MUDGETT, Svea, S. Dak.; MARY G. KNAPP, Humboldt County, California; MRS. SILVIA F.
