| Death* | 19 Oct 1919 | Arlington, Sibley Co., Minnesota, Information from Death Certificate: Age 82 years, 2 months, 27 days. Retired housewife, widow. Father is Louis Voigt (born in Germany). Mother is Elizabeth Kohna (born in Germany) Cause of ddeath: Cerebral hemorrhage. Informant is William Young, Jr. (who is also the undertaker). Obituary from the Arlington Enterprise on 24 October 1929: Pioneer Woman Dead. Came to State in 1856. Elizabeth Barbara Luhring Dies at Age of 82 Years. Funeral Held Tuesday. Elizabeth Barbara Luhring has gone to her reward. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. July 22, 1847 and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Aug. Beseke, of Arlington, Minn. The total of her age is 82 years, 4 months, and 27 days. She is only 14 days older than her husband, whom she outlived 11 years. Mrs. Luhring was one of the pioneer women of Minnesota. She came with her parents to Scott county in 1856. She was then a girl of only 9 years and experienced the joys and hardships of pioneer life, such as living in log houses, insufficient and poorly prepared food and the menace that hostile Indians of the neighborhood added. On May 17, 1864 she was happily married to Christian F. Luhring at Le Sueur, Minn., and established their home on a farm near Arlington, Sibley county, where they remained for some years. This union was blessed with 5 sons and one daughter. Two of the sons died in infancy and those remaining are John and Lydia (Mrs. Aug. Benseke) of Arlington, and Wesley and Oscar of Minneapolis. One sister, Mrs. Wm. Schlegel of Scott county also survives. She is 91 years of age. Besides these there are 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grand children living. In 1870 they moved to Le Sueur, Minn., where they lived only a year, then moved to Mankato where they remained 8 years. Then, after a short stay at Good Thunder, they came to Arlington. Here they found a pleasant home with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. August Benseke. For 15 years they lived here together, and since the husband was taken away she stayed 11 more years. Mrs. Luhring was a charter member of the local Methodist church. She was greatly interested in the things of religion. Religion was not a burden but a real joy to her life. In her active years she taught a bible class in the Sunday school; was the corresponding secretry of the Womens Foreign Missionary Society, and also secretary of the Epworth League organized under leadership of Pastor John Houck. Mrs. Luhring was a noble Christian character. All along her life's journey this trait was predominant. Life, to her, was real, was earnest, was worth while. It made her a good helpmate and a loving mother. The welfare of her children was always on her heart and mind. She did all in her power to point out to them, both in precept and example, the value of Christian living. For her friends and associates she always had a helping hand and cheerful word. She loved the House of God, and, as long a I knew here, when it was physically possible, she never missed a service. Of her it is true what the psalmist says: "They shall still bring forth fruit in old age, they shall be fat and flourishing: to shew that the Lord God is upright." Her end was like her life, a natural consequence: Peace. During her last illness she spent much time in prayer and expressed the desire to go home. Only a few hours, more or less, did she suffer, then fell asleep in God. She will be sorely missed by her sons and duaghters. The 26 years of her stay have left a lasting impression that will remain, yet they mourn not as such that have no hope. A host of friends join in their sorrow, and rejoice in her victory. - Contributed. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, with services at the August Beseke home and at the Methodist church in Arlington. Rev. C.F. Koerner officiated. The remains were interred in Arlington Cemetery.2 |

| Death* | 9 Jan 1908 | Obituary in the Arlington Enterprise onThursday 23 January 1908 (Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Dwight Grabitske) NO MORE Henry Luhring has joined the Silent Ranks. Cause, Heart Failure One by one the soldiers of the Civil War are responding to the call to come up higher. The last to answer from the local G.A.R. post was Comrade Henry Luhring, whose sudden death on the evening of Jan. 9th came as a great surprise to all. He had been about during the day apparently enjoying better health than usual. He assisted about the chores in the evening milking several cows and carrying the milk to the house. Just as he was preparing to retire he complained of a pain in his arm which suddenly shifted to his other arm and then to his heart when he became unconscious and in a very few moments the end was at hand. Henry Luhring was born on the 22nd of May, 1841 at Menden, Prussia, and when but three years of age accompanied his parents to America locating in the state of Indiana, where his mother passed away when he was yet but a small child. Here he received the rudiments of a common school education and at the age of fifteen years came to Minnesota, as one of the pioneer settlers of Sibley county, the old homestead being where the present village of Arlington is now located. Here in company with others the boy pioneer experienced all the trials incidental to the settlement of the territory of Minnesota. It was while located here that the nation went through the crisis of the civil war and with a patriotism equal to that of our native born citizens he enrolled his name upon the muster roll as a member of company M, First Minnesota heavy artillery. The enrollment was made on Feb. 4th, 1865 and he continued in his country’s service until he was mustered out and sent to Chatanooga. On January 18th, 1870 he was united im maarriage to Miss Mary Vogt, and to them were born seven children two of whom passed away at Mankato, in 1875, where the family resided for a time. The children who with the devoted wife and mother are left to mourn the loss of a loving father are: L. R. Luhring of Henderson, George, Edward, Lena and Lucy, who reside at home. One brother Christian Luhring of Arlington, and one sister Mrs. Caroline Jones, of East Prairie, Missouri also survive the deceased. The funeral service was held at the Methodist church Sunday and was largely attended, his old neighbors for miles about were present and it was with genuine sorrow that they witnessed the last services which mortal man can pay to those whom they have learned to love and honor in life. - Blue Earth County County Enterprise. |

| Death* | 14 Jul 1936 | Sibley Co., Minnesota, Arlington Enterprise, Thursday, 23 July 1936 Obituary of Late Henry L. Soeffker The late Heinrich Ludwig Soeffker, meniton of whose death was made in these columns last week, reached the age of 76 years, 4 months, and 17 days. He was the oldest of nine children of a pioneer Arlington township family that settled here in the 50's. He was a son of Ferdinand and Louise Soeffker and he was born in Arlington township February 27, 1860. This pioneer famly held membership in St. John's Lutheran church. There the deceased was baptized by Rev. Winter, confirmed by Rev. Krumsieg and married by Rev. Ross. He entered in holy wedlock with Wilelmine Roehler, who bore him seven children, all of whom survived the parents. They made their home for many years on the homestead south of town, now owned by their son William. After the death of his wife on Sept. 15, 1914, Mr. Soeffker made his home with his son Paul in Arlington. For the past year, however, he made his home with his son, William. He died there unexpecedly Tuesday morning, July 14. Deceased is survived by seven children, namely: Mrs. Walter Bening (Clara), William, John and Paul of Arlington; Mrs. Lydia Kuhlmann and Miss Alma of Minneapolis, and Mrs. E Klossner (Frieda) of New Ulm. He is alwo survived by three sisters: Mrs. Carl Weihe, Mrs. Louise Bade and Mrs. Bertha Nagel, all of Arlington. There are 19 surviving grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. As stated last week, deceased was familiarly known as "Doc" Soeffker in this community. He gained this title as a result of his many years of service as a veterinary. In the early days his practice extended over a wide territory and he became well known and was highly respected because of this unfailing response to calls when horses or livestock needed medical aid. The funeral was held from the Wm. Soeffker home Thursday afternoon with services at St. Paul's Lutheran church and interment in Arlington Cemetery. Rev. R. Heidmann officiated. The last rites were largely attended. The following from a distance attended the last rites: Miss Alma Soeffker, Mrs. Lydia Kuhlmann and Wm. C. Roehler of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Klossner, Mr. and Mrs. John Vetter, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Siemering, Mrs. Henry Boesch, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Schafler, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Klossner, Mrs. Herman Quandt of New Ulm; Mr. and Mrs. A Schulenberg of Essig; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schieble of St. Peter; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. | Death* | 21 Jun 1926 | Dryden, Sibley Co., Minnesota, Information from Death Certificate: Age 87 years, 11 months, 7 days, retired farmer, born in Germany, parents unknown. cause of death: senile changes with contributing cause abcess of cervical glands of neck. Informant: William Young, Jr. of Arlington (who was also the undertaker). Obituary published in the Arlington Enterprise on 1 July 1926: Civil War Veteran and Pioneer Laid to Rest Dies at Age of 88 Years, Served in First Minnesota Artillery, Lived in Arlington Community Nearly 65 Years, Buried Thursday. Martin Gottlieb Bandelin, Sibley county pioneer, Civil War veteran and highly respected citizen of this community, passed away at the home of his son, George, on the old homestead west of Arlington, on Monday, June 21st, after an illness of several weeks with abscess of the cervical glands. Had he lived three days more he would have reached his 88th year. Martin Gottlieb Bandelin was born in West Deep, Pomerania, Germany, June 24, 1838. His birthday was his day of burial. He received his common school education in his native land. At the age of 17, he came to America with his parents. The family lived 7 years in Wisconsin after which they moved to Minnesota where Mr. Bandelin spent the remainder of his life on a farm near Arlington. During the last year he served in the Civil War as a private in Company H. First Regiment of Minnesota Heavy Artillery, and was honorably dischaged at the close of the conflict. In 1864 he married to Miss Augusta Maria Perseke. This happy union lasted 49 years when his wife was taken from his side by death in 1916. There were born to them 13 children, 9 daughters and 4 sons. Three of the children died in their infancy, 3 daughters and 1 son. The youngest daughter, Mrs. Alice Baker, preceded him in death in 1923. The children surviving Mr. Bandelin are: Caroline, Mrs. Aug. Wiemann, Johanna, Mrs. John Wiemann, Lydia, Mrs. Louis Luhring, Clara, Mrs. Arthur Maas, and George of Arlington; Idella, Mrs. Ed. Wiemann, N. Dak., Laura, Mrs. Aug. Obernolte, Cal., Fred of Canada, and Harrison of Fairbault. In youth he received his religious instructions in the land of his birth. As a young man of 18 he was converted to God at a camp meeting of the Evangelical Association held in Wisconsin. He joined this Denomination and was an active member in it until in 1892 when, on account of a depleted membership the work terminated, he with his family transferred to the local Methodist Church. That he was not a churchmember in name only an be vouched for by all who knew him. The church at various times entrusted him with the offices of a trustee, steward, classleader, and S.S. teacher. He was a whole-souled Christian, concerned himself in the various activities of the church, and joyfully contributed of his means to the support of its institutions. As long as his health permitted he attended the services of the church regularly. He was the pastor's friend. He was of a cheerful disposition, always saw the bright side of life, was hopeful of its outcome and preferred to see and speak o the good in other people. To him can be applied the words of Peter: Love covereth a multitude of sins" In his prayers he did not forget the spiritual welfare of others, especially not that of his children and their families. The bible was a source of delight and comfort to him. He was a father in the true sense of the word. He retained all his mental faculties, keen mind, and a good memory to the last. He was ill only about two weeks when the end came. He passed of calm, serene, and anxious to be with his Redeemer. Tho gone to his reward, his influence is left behind and will live on in the lives he touched. His noble character is worthy of imitation. Father Bandelin is survived by 6 daughters, 3 sons, 42 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon, with services at the home at 2 o'clock, followed by services at the Methodist church, Rev. G.E. Bemmels officiating. A Firing squad representing the American Legion accorded the deceased the last military tribute. The pall bearers were: Carl Lampe. L. Breitkeutz, August and John Wiemann, Louis Luhring and Art Maas. Interment was in Cemetery Arlington. Relatives from a distance who attended were as follows: Mr. and Mrs. John Redetzke of Echo; Mrs. O. Plahn. Dewey Plahn, Miss Paulina Bandelin, Mrs. Ray Goebel and Mrs. Smith of Minneapolis; Franklin Wiemann and family of Gaylord; Mrs. D. Wanshaw of Waseca; Mr. and Mrs. C. Rabe and Mrs. G.A.
