| Biography* | Nils and his brother, Peder each took over quarter-pieces of the sub- division (VI-VIII) from their father on 19 October 1800... at a cost of 14 1/2 rdl. On 4 August 1820, Nils bought the quarter-piece belonging to his brother Peder and joined it with his own piece. Their father, Edis Nilsen farmed the remaining half until his death in 1804. That land later went by deed of conveyance to his grandson, Ole Andreas Johnsen (son of his son, John Edissen Lind). Nils Edissen did quite well with his half-section and, at the settlement of his estate (completed 31 July 1827) the assets totalled 211 spd., liabilities 42 spd. The houses on the sub-division: cottage with loft (attic), floor and kitchen, cattlebarn, haybarn and storehouse, assessed (including the land) at 83 spd. Boats: a "femboring" (Nordland boat with five pairs of rowers) with all of its belongings, 24 spd., an "attring" (old type of boat with five pairs of oars, or with four and space for cargo in the middle), 6 spdl. | |

| Biography* | Rasmus Pedersen got a royal deed of conveyance from Denmark and was able to buy Sub-Division II of Dale in 1799. Rasmus died in 1811, during the year of hardship, and at the settlement of his estate (completed 2 December, 1812) the estate was appraised at 641 rdlr., indebtedness: 370 rdlr., of which 198 rdlr. was owed to the merchants Stamann and Ameln in Bergen. The houses on the Sub-Division included a cottage with a small room, attic, floor and front door; storage house; two new cattle barns; haybarn; and shop. His widow, Olava Hansdatter Dybli, operated the farm with her children for many years after her husband's death. It was not until 22 July, 1846, that her son Peder got a deed of conveyance from his mother, brothers, and sisters, to the part of the farm which he had not himself inherited. | |

| Note* | Torstein Jørgensen (grandson): I do remember very well. Every Sunday afternoon we paied her a visit for 2 hours. She got trouble with her legs, at the end of 1940, and could not move around by herself very much. At Grøtavær/Alvestad had no cars at that time, and I remember that we used our horse, and waggon with a chair upon, to travel her around, summer as winter. Mostly she was sitting in the kitchen, humming for herself, with a warm kindly smile, laughing to almost everything. She never complained about anything. When a negative discussion was brought up, she became totally quiet, and looked another way. She used to tell me; just be yourself, behave well, and everything will be ok. For such a person it`s not easy to select any special issue. Everything with her gave comfort and prospects/hopes. If the world consisted of persons like her, this planet would be named paradise.1 | |

| Biography* | Notes on Rolf Martin Hanson - Nerstrand Minnesota Rolf was born on 5 September 1882 (Rolf Martin Rasmussen) on the Farm Alvestad in the Trondenes Parish of Troms, Norway. He was the 5th of the eight children of Rasmus Peder Hansen and Maren Katherine Larsdatter and the first of the 3 children to immigrate to America. He came to the U.S. in 1903 (from Trondjeim) aboard the ship Ivernia (the same ship his brother would emigrate on two years later) and landed at the Port of Boston on the 14th of June 1903. Rolf registered as an alien as required in the Public Safety Commission's 1918 Alien Registration and filed a Declaration of Intention to become a U.S. citizen on April 16th of that year (in Rice County). He reported (many years later) that he was drafted for service in World War I, but was never sent. It's not clear exactly when Rolf Hanson came to Minnesota, but he was in Nerstrand (Rice County) as early at 1910 and in 1914 was listed in the Minneapolis City Directory (living as a boarder at his brother Alfred's home) and was working as an operator at the Freeman Patterson Shoe Company. It's clear, however, that Rolf spent most of his adult life working as a farm hand in the Nerstrand area. His niece, Evelyn Sundgren, has an address for him (at one point) at 109 Winona Street in Northfield. That home is just across the street from Carleton College. His 1918 alien registration was filed in neighboring Goodhue County. In the 1930s (or so) Rolf Hanson worked as a hired hand on the Vesledahl Farm in Nerstrand (mile marker 11 on Highway 246). He had earlier worked in the same capacity at O.S. Stenbakken Farm (source: 1910 census) and at the Quie Farm (Vesledahl info). Rolf was a tailor (trained in Norway), according to the Vesledahls, but never practiced as a tailor in Nerstrand. He was very skilled with ropes and took charge of the rope splicing necessary to make the intersection of two ropes run smoothly over the pulleys (used in putting hay into the mow). Other farmers in the area hired him to come and do their rope work too. His ability with ropes apparently came from his experience in working on boats in Norway. He is described as "quiet, a loner, stern, noticeably `tight', nice, respectful, hard-to-know". He liked kids but was a little awkward around them. If a child sat at the table with Rolf they had better be at their best behavior. He wouldn't tolerate excess noisiness. It is this latter "stern" quality that his niece and nephew (Ev Sundgren and Winston Hansen) remember particularly about him. When Isabelle Vesledahl came home from school, Rolf always had the same question: "So, what did you learn in school today?" Cora Vesledahl thinks it was Rolf who asked Isabelle (who played the organ), "Can you play Norwegian?" Rolf had a good singing voice and liked music. He especially liked Kate Smith. Isabelle Vesledahl remembers coming into the kitchen and finding Rolf dancing to the music on the radio. He chewed tobacco, but was neat (Isabelle says he was not a slob!). He had the (sort of) amusing habit of closely inspecting the silver and the dishes (and picking or blowing at any specks) before using them. He was also remembered for the joke of pulling his coffee cup out from under the stream while it was still being poured. His nephew, Win Hansen, remembers him as being a good dresser... with nice clothes. Apparently Rolf had sun stroke at one time. During haying season, if you found him at rest under a tree on a hot day - you were made to recognize that he wasn't lazy but that his "sunstroke" limited his ability to work under those conditions. The Vesledals remember Rolf as a good-sized man, healthy, with big bones, a strong chest, and a face that was a little bit roundish. He apparently didn't have the slender build that his brother had, however, as he describes himself (in the Declaration of Intention) as 5 feet 6 inches tall and 165 pounds (age 35 at the time). He had brown hair and blue eyes. Rolf reportedly had a "nervous stomach" and geared his diet towards that a little (lots of milk products etc.). The Vesledals say that to their observation Rolf did not have a social life of any kind. There was some question as to whether or not he had ever had a girlfriend, but the consensus was that he did not. He did not play on any athletic teams nor participate in any clubs or organizations. He would talk frequently about the "land of the midnight sun" and seemed to be homesick for Norway at times. He had a Ford Model-T Coupe of which he was very proud. He would wash it up on Sundays (sparingly making do with a half bucket of water) and would go for a drive in the country. There was enough work on the farm to keep him busy year-round. In the winter time was spent cleaning out the barns, clearing the snow, chopping wood, etc. Sometimes when the workload was less, he might retire to his room after supper. As the hired-hand his access to the house was pretty much limited to the kitchen and his room upstairs. That was the way it was in most of the places he worked. At some farms the hired hands were fed separately (and with different food) from the family... but that was never the way it was where Rolf worked. It was the custom of the Vesledahls to sit around the table every evening and read papers by the lamp which stood in the middle of the table. (The sisters don't remember if Rolf read... but are pretty sure that he did). At breakfast in the morning the family listened to the radio broadcast of the Church Services from St. Olaf and were expected to listen quietly and without distraction. Rolf sat with the other hired hand (Ole, and later Harold) on one side of the table. John Vesledahl sat at the end of the table. Mrs. Vesledahl sat across from Rolf with one daughter to her right and the youngest (Isabelle) sandwiched at the corner between her and John. The other daughter (I guess) sat at the other end of the table. Rolf invested his "life savings" in the W.B. Foshay Co. (of tower fame)- apparently buying his stock from a fellow named Alvestad - and when the company took a sudden dive (only weeks after the Tower's dedication) he lost his investment. He was very upset and angry about it and told the Vesledahls that he never wanted to see Alvestad again, and that if Alvestad showed up there looking for him they should tell him he was not there. It's interesting to note that "Alvestad" was the name of the farm where Rolf was born - and it is presumed that this Alvestad came from the same area in Norway. After Rolf Hanson retired (because of age) from his job as a hired hand, he lived in a little shack (on 160th Street, below the Valley Grove Lutheran Church)...reportedly for a period of 10 years or so. It was one room and was "a shack" by all definitions. Isabelle Vesledahl didn't know who had owned the land on which the shack stood. Rolf served as the Janitor for the Valley Grove Lutheran Church and was very conscientious about his job. He would walk up the hill every morning and stoke up the stove and keep it going during the day. He also mowed the cemetery with a small hand-mower. At one time he had also worked at the farm across the way from the church. The Vesledahls said there was some concern that Rolf was not eating well (or was eating food that was spoiled) in the years that he lived by himself. The shack had no refrigeration, plumbing, etc. The Vesledahls assume that he was supported by the State during the time he lived at Wood's nursing home in Faribault... although he might have had enough money saved to pay for it. He was admitted to Woods Nursing Home (214 Park Avenue Northwest) on the 26th of April 1956 and remained there until his death on August 18th 1959 at the age of 77. He had been suffering from arteriosclerotic heart disease for 15 years prior to his death and died of congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema. Rolf was buried at Valley Grove Lutheran Church in Nerstrand. The minister who presided at the funeral was Mischael Hernandez - the Mexican-Spanish minister of the almost-wholly Norwegian congregation of the Grace Lutheran Church in Nerstrand (and whose cremated ashes were later flown from his place of death in California and are buried in the grave site next to Rolf's). Cora Vesledahl made the funeral arrangements and the Vesledahls were pretty much the only ones at the funeral. They do not know who paid for his cemetery marker but thought that he might have had enough money to cover it. (Nursing Home records indicate that he had a small amount ($275) in the bank at Nerstrand when he died). | |

| WWI Draft* | 18 Sep 1918 | Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota, Rolf Martin Hanson, age 36, resident of Nerstrand, Rice Co., Minnesota, registered for the draft on 12 September 1918. His occupation was Farm Labor and his employer was given as Carl Kolseth, Nerstrand; Rolf's date of birth was 5 September 1882. He gave his nearest relative as his brother Alfred Hanson / 3613 16 Ave S, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Rolf was described as being of medium height with medium build, eyecolor: His eyes were blue and his hair was dark. He had no obvious physical disqualifications and was a US alien (declared) born in Norway.9 |
| Residence | 1920 | Wheeling Township, Rice Co., Minnesota, USA, Enumerated in a household with Oscar and Clara Bond. Oscar Bond was a dairy farmer and "Ralph" is listed as the hired man, age 37. This is the farm next to (in sequence on the census) the John and Enger Vesledal farm where Rolf worked at other times in his life. The census says that Rolf could read and write and that he could speak English. It says that he immigrated in 1904 and that he had filed preliminary citizenship papers. He was a farm laborer, working for wages.10 |
| Residence | 1930 | Nerstrand, Rice Co., Minnesota, USA, Rolf was enumerated as a 48 year old unemployed farm laborer, in the household of Harold Binger, a 26 year old truck driver for a gravel company. They were recorded as living in a separate dwelling place, but it was not listed as either owned or rented. One possibility (the continuation of the ditto marks in one of the data fields makes me think this is true) is that they lived in a separate building on the property of the family enumerated ahead of them (Charles and Carrie Radtke). Radke was a mail carrier for the postal service. The census confirms that Rolf was not a veteran, that he did not own a radio, that he could speak English, that he could read and write, and that he immigrated in 1903 and was a naturalized citizen of the US.11 |

| Note* | Win Hansen: The thing I'm quite confident of is that she visited Norway in 1927, the year Lindberg soloed the Atlantic. I remember she gave me a replica of a Viking knife complete with a leather (or fake leather) scabbard. I was very proud of it and had it for many years. And so, she moved to Gig Harbor sometime(?) after 1927. We did exchange a letter or two, but I can't say when. | |
