| Death* | 3 Oct 1908 | Riceville, Mitchell Co., Iowa, Age 74 years, 5 months, 29 days. Obituary, Riceville (IA) Recorder, Oct. 14, 1908 (as transcribed by macnjac91@hotmail.com on Rootweb/Dunton maillist): With the passing of Levi Barber Dunton, who was laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery, in Riceville, last Sunday, northern Iowa lost a man who had the distinction of being one of the oldest pioneers of Mitchell County, one of the members of the Masonic order in the state, and of having served continuously in one public office longer than any other known person in the state. He was born in the town of Georgia, state of Vermont, April 4, 1834. When a mere lad his parents, Thomas and Aurora Dunton, emigrated with their family of nine children, including 'Barb' as he was familiarly called, to Battle Creek, MI. When he was 19 years old he severed home ties, and launched out on his own account, locating at Morseville, Jo Daviess County, IL, where he was engaged in teaching school at an age which was then considered very young. He also conducted singing school and was much interested in debating societies, both of which were very much in vogue in the 1850's. It was here and under his tutelage that Hon. R.T. St. John, who is well known over the state, got his first inspiration for public service and a friendship was cemented which was never broken. In the year 1856 he left his work in Illinois, being attracted by the western prairies, and with Foster, Samuel, and George Tyrell, whose sister he afterwards married, preempted government land in Jenkins Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, near the then-frontier village of Riceville. After a few years, being sufficiently satisfied with his location, he returned to Illinois and brought back with him to his claim Miss Cynthia Tyrrell as his wife, to join with him in braving the privations of what was then considered the far west. Mr. Dunton still owned this quarter section at the time of his death and leaves it as an inheritance for his children. He showed foresight in that this land is now worth $75 an acre. His first years in Mitchell County were spent in developing his claim and constructing a house and outbuildings, he himself procuring the lumber by cutting logs on a piece of timber land on the Wapsie, which he had acquired, and drawing them with his ox team to the Rice & Sherman sawmill at Riceville, doing his own carpenter work, practically showing his handiwork from the trees growing in the forest to the finished buildings. He was extremely active by nature. During the winter months, when there was a lull in farm work, he taught school at Jenkins Center, and in the summer time when not occupied with his own farm, he in company with Hon. R.T. St. John, with their ox teams, turned over many a foot of the virgin soil for their neighbors. It has no sinecure to stir out at an early hour in the morning and search the prairies over for the oxen that would often stray away over the open prairie, and then turn over the tough sod until late in the evening. The principal farm product was wheat, which had to be drawn overland, to McGregor, a distance of about sixty miles, the nearest railroad station, and later to Conover and Cresco. Many a time the price received was as low as 40 cents per bushel and if accomodations had been sought at a hotel, there would not have been enough realized to pay for the expenses of the trip, so a sheet thrown over the tongue in lieu of a ten, served as shelter for the men. Frequently the temperature would fall 10 or 20 degrees below zero, and this hardy pioneer and his companions would sleep as best they could and breakfast on a frozen lunch brought from home. These early days were not unmixed with a measure of enjoyment and pleasure. In the middle 1850's, perhaps in 1856, this part of the state experienced a very heavy snowfall, followed with extreme cold, freezing the snow somewhat and making it very difficult for deer, which then abounded, to run from place to place, and many were run down with snow shoes and slaughtered. Mr. Dunton, in company with the Fosters, built a dugout on the banks of the river as a protection against the cold and snow, and made forays after deer, practically subsisting on venison that winter, being far removed from a railroad station and snowbound, their stock of provisions in the way of flour and groceries, fell very low. The marks of this dugout are still there, the land now being owned by the Hon. R.T. St. John, to show that these men mixed pleasure with the stern realities of life, the trees in that vicinity still bear the scars of bullets from target practice. The long distance from market and a mill proved the sorest privation to the Dunton family, with others. Frequently, the only flour available for bread was the corn, which was not overly abundant, ground in the hand coffee mill, and for tea they used 'prairie tea' or red root as a substitute for coffee, roasted peas and honey, which they factiously called Lincoln coffee during the rebellion. During the New Ulm, MN, Indian massacre, which has become a matter of history, Mitchell County, along with other border counties, was affected with the scare, and heeding the general call, Mr. Dunton joined and drilled with the militia, in case the outbreak should spread, and the massacre be carried to Iowa. In his younger days, Mr. Dunton was deeply interested in matters pertaining to the county, and was especially active in the county seat strife between Mitchell and Osage. The county seat was first established at Osage, but later Mitchell built a court house and offered to donate it to the county. The matter was put to popular vote and Mitchell won. The county government was removed to Mitchell, but afterwards went to Osage on a legal technicality. L.B. Dunton was elected as justice very soon after removing to Riceville and served continuously for thirty-five years, up to the time of his death, a distinction which he holds alone in the state. He became a recognized authority in matters of justice trial, and had become an involuntary councilor for his neighbors. He was also secretary of the Riceville school board for about the same length of time. In 1878 Mr. Dunton was bereft of his first wife and afterwards was married to Mrs. Alvina Foster, a sister of his first wife, who is now living at the home in Riceville. Later in life he left his farm and engaged in the mercantile business, but still retained his homestead. He died a consistent member of the Masonic order. He had acquired to the Royal Arch, and was past grand junior warden of the State of Iowa. He was also a member of the Osage chapter and was for twenty years Master of the Riceville lodge. Forty-two years he had spent in the field of Masonry. He died as he had lived, honored and respected by all. Six hundred of his brother Masons, relatives and friends witnessed his burial rites. --------------------------- Another obituary, paper unknown, from a scrapbook - posted by a non-relation on Rootweb Dunton Maillist: Levi Barber Dunton was born April 4, 1834, in Georgia in the state of Vermont, and died October 3, 1908; being 74 years, 5 months and 29 days of age. Levi Barber was the son of Thomas and Aurora Dunton. He was one of the older boys in a family of 9 children, 5 boys and 4 girls; all of whom have now passed to the life beyond except one sister, Mrs. Lepha E. Bailey of Carribou, Minnesota. When a mere boy Mr. Dunton came from Vermont to Michigan, and when 19 years of age he went to Illinois to teach school. In 1856 he left his work in Illinois and came to Iowa and took up a homestead just northwest of Riceville. December 31, 1857 he was united in marriage to Miss Cynthia Tyrell. To this union were born 6 children; 5 boys and 1 girl, of whom but three are living; Levi, Fred and Adelbert. In 1878 Mrs. Dunton died, and some time later Mr. Dunton was married to a sister of his former wife, Mrs. Elvira Foster who remains to mourn his loss. To this union was born two children, Wayne and Aldis. Mr. Dunton has resided for a long number of years in and near Riceville, and has become a part of its growth and development. He served for 35 years continuously as secretary of the Riceville School Board and as Justice of the Peace for about the same length of time, up to the time of his death. He was counted among the earliest pioneers of Riceville and of Mitchell county, emigrating to Iowa fifty-five years ago. He had been member of the Masonic Order for forty-two years, a Royal Arch, a member of the Osage (Iowa) chapter, and was for twenty years master of the Riceville Lodge.10,3 |
