| Biography* | The Tenmile County And Its Pioneer Families: A history of the family by Arthur L. Keith, Northfield, Minnesota, and published in Volume 4 of Tyler's Quarterly Magazine, has this to say of Henry Enoch I: "The first record of the Enochs is from the journal of George Washington, who when a young man, made surveys in Hampshire County. The journal shows that on April 23, 1750, George Washington surveyed land for Henry Enoch in the forks of the Cacaphon to the extent of 388 acres, John Keith acting at chainman and John Constant as marker. On April 25, 1750, he surveyed another tract for John Newton, about a mile above said forks, beginning at Henry Enoch's Corner, with the same men as chainman and marker. The next day Washington surveyed a tract of 200 acres on the South branch of Little Cacaphon for John Parker, with Henry Enoch (probably Jr.) as chainman." | |
| Birth* | c 1707 | Bucks Co., Pennsylvania2 |
| Residence* | 1730 | Kingsessing, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Signed the tardy inventory of his brother John's estate.2 |
| Marriage* | Bride=Elizabeth Ross2 | |
| Residence | Maryland, joined his cousins in western Maryland2 | |
| Note* | 23 Apr 1750 | Forks of the Cacapon River, Frederick Co., Virginia, Williams-Enoch Genealogy: George Washington's journal shows that on April 23, 1750, he surveyed for Henry Enoch, a tract of 288 acres at the Forks of the Cacapehon River in Frederick Co. (later Hampshire County), Virginia. Two days later he was surveying for John Newton on the North River branch about a mile above the forks beginning at Enoch's corner. And the next day, with Henry Enoch as chainman [possibly Henry III?], he surveyed two hundred acres on the Little Cacapehon River for John Parker. The domain of Henry Enoch eventually comprised some twelve hundred acres of land. His home had been established as the northernmost of twenty three forts located by Colonel Washington for the protection of the Virginia frontier against Indian raids.2,3 |
| Note | 28 Nov 1770 | Forks of the Cacapon River, Hampshire Co., Virginia, In George Washington's journal of his tour on the river he wrote that on November 28th, 1770, he dined with Henry Enoch in his home at the forks of the Cacapehon.2,4 |
| Death* | 1783 | Forks of the Cacapon River, Hampshire Co., Virginia2 |
| Burial* | Forks of the Cacapon River, Hampshire Co., Virginia, Williams-Enoch Genealogt (1953): And here at the forks of the Cacapehon is the old graveyard where lie the remains of Henry and Elizabeth Enoch, who lived to be over eight years of age. Many others are buried there, both whites and blacks; but the graves of the Enochs cannot be distinguished. The old markers are broken slabs of sandstone, which by now are weather worn and fallen. If they ever had inscriptions on them these are now indecipherable but the hills survive, and the pleasing fields and the old mill race, and the healing waters of the Cacapehon, yes, and the memory and influence of lives so earnestly lived when the wilderness was flourishing.3 |

| Death* | ||
| Biography* | The Tenmile Country And Its Pioneer Families: It is possible... that Michael Roseberry, immediate ancestor of the local family, did live for a time on the Juniata River. A "Michle Roseberry" was living there at the time of the 1790 Census being the head of a family of 2 males over 16 years of age, three males under 16 years, and 2 female persons. No such person is found in the Census of Washington County for that year, nor in any other available records. His sons, John Roseberry and Mathias Roseberry (the latter but 18 years of age) are in the list of those living near Jefferson in 1790. Known records of Mathias Roseberry show that he was married October 8, 1795, so that the Census record of 1790 showing him head of a family of 2 adult males and one female may be taken as further proof that Michael Roseberry may have come west with his sons in 1784, and been living with his wife at a home provided by Mathias. In such event it would further substantiate the claims of Mr. J.B. Ornorff, that Michael accompanied his son Mathias to Center Township, where he died and is buried. All claims say that Michael Roseberry married Mary Mapel for his first wife, and this points again to New Jersey ancestry. It may have been the only marriage made by Michael Roseberry, though Mr. J.M. Roseberry claims a marriage with a wealthy Ruth Chambers. Here again the Tuscarora Valley would be considered, but there is no evidence to support the claim that Ruth Chambers was the mother of the children of Michael Roseberry. All evidence would indicate that Mary Mapel was the mother of the children. The death of Michael Roseberry and his wife (or wives) is not given in any records. | |
