MRS MARY LEONARD

Shock From Fall Hastened Death of Aged Resident

Mrs. Mary Leonard, widow of Samuel Leonard, died at her home in this city, Wednesday afternoon, from infirmiies of age. She had fallen a week previous and the general shock to her system hastened her death.

Mary A.E. Hill, daugher of William P. and Elizabeth (Poage) Hill, was born in Pocahontas county, West Virginia, on Februay 14, 1852, and died in Jamesport, Missouri, January 29, 1936, aged 83 years, 11 months and 15 days.

She came to Missouri in 1855 with her parents who settled on a place one mile west of Jamesport when this section was only a stretch of prairie.

On December 21, 1870, she was united in marriage to Samuel Leonard, also living west of Jamesport. They had no children of their own but took care of several at different times. Mrs. Lucy Johnson of Gallatin stayed with them five years in her girlhood. They reared Addie Kimball, a niece, from babyhood. She died in 1902. They also took into their home two nephews, Claude Henderson of Durango, Colo., and Ray Henderson of Jamesport, and two nieces, Mrs. Karo DeVorss of Kansas City and Mrs. Tom Alderton of Newton, Kan.

Mrs. Leonard is the last of a family of eight children. Her brother, Geo. W. Hill, next last surviving member of the family, died in this city on April 2, 1932, aged 89 years and 21 days. Her husband died May 28, 1834, aged 87 years. She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins in this community.

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard lived on a farm west of Jamesport during their early married life, then moved into town, later returned to the farm for some years, and about twenty years ago built the present home and moved back into town. Since the husband's death, Mrs. Leonard has been looked after by her nephew, Ray Henderson, with Mrs. Belle Whitaker having been in the home the last year.

Funeral services will be held at the M.E. Church South on Friday afternoon, January 31, at 2 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.J. Chappell.

Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.4,2

SAMUEL LEONARD

Aged Resident Succumbs to Paralysis After Week's Illness

Samuel Leonard died at his home in this city Monday forenoon, May 28, following a stroke of paralysis a week before, aged 87 years, 6 months and 28 days. Several years ago he had suffered a light stroke of paralysis and had been in failing health since that time.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Roberson Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. A.W. Darter, pastor of the M.E. church South, and burial was made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.

The following account of his life was read at the funeral service:

Samuel Leonard, son of Michael and Ruth Jarrett Leonard, was born at Lewisburg, Greenbrier county, W. Va., October 30, 1846. He became an orphan at twelve years of age and was reared in the home of his grandfather. He had a half-sister, Mrs. George Hill, of Jamesport, Mo., and a half-brother, Willie Leonard, Lewisburg, W. Va., both deceased.

At the age of twenty-two he came to Missouri and settled on a farm west of Jamesport. He was married to Mary E. Hill on December 21, 1870, who survives him. They had no children, but Mrs. Lucy Johnson, Gallatin, stayed in their home five years in her girlhood. They reared Addie Kimball, a niece, from babyhood. She died in 1902. They also took into their home two nephews Claude Henderson, Durango, Colo., and Raymond Henerson, Jamesport, Mo., and two nieces, Mrs. Karo DeVorss, Kansas City, and Mrs. Tom Alderton, Newton, Kan.

Mr. Leonard was a retired farmer and stock raiser and had resided in Jamesport for the last eighteen years. His home was most hospitable and he was always glad to help those in need.1
