She came to Missouri in 1855 with her parents who settled on a place one mile west of Jamesport when this section was only a stretch of prairie. On December 21, 1870, she was united in marriage to Samuel Leonard, also living west of Jamesport. They had no children of their own but took care of several at different times. Mrs. Lucy Johnson of Gallatin stayed with them five years in her girlhood. They reared Addie Kimball, a niece, from babyhood. She died in 1902. They also took into their home two nephews, Claude Henderson of Durango, Colo., and Ray Henderson of Jamesport, and two nieces, Mrs. Karo DeVorss of Kansas City and Mrs. Tom Alderton of Newton, Kan. Mrs. Leonard is the last of a family of eight children. Her brother, Geo. W. Hill, next last surviving member of the family, died in this city on April 2, 1932, aged 89 years and 21 days. Her husband died May 28, 1834, aged 87 years. She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins in this community. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard lived on a farm west of Jamesport during their early married life, then moved into town, later returned to the farm for some years, and about twenty years ago built the present home and moved back into town. Since the husband's death, Mrs. Leonard has been looked after by her nephew, Ray Henderson, with Mrs. Belle Whitaker having been in the home the last year. Funeral services will be held at the M.E. Church South on Friday afternoon, January 31, at 2 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.J. Chappell. Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.4,2 |
