| Biography* | Poffenbarger Papers: John Godley, married _________ Middlecoff by whom he had one daughter Minnie who married Kinsey Robinson. He dying she moved with her family to Columbus, Ohio. The second wife of John Godley was Ella Meeks of Lewis District. They were the parents of a large family of children among whom were:John, Mahlon, Edward, William, Robert, Nellie and Mary. The family moved from here to Columbus Ohio. John Godley was one of the enterprising men of the town. He owned a block of frame buildings between the Court House and 5th street on Main, where he not only conducted in 1872 a furniture store and coffin establishment, but he opened a second floor of a frame building located where the Charles building is now, as an office building, a small theatre, for which the late D.S. Van Matre painted the scenery and became the advertising manager of “Godleys Theatre.” Here were wont to annually appear, traveling troops making a weeks stand. While local dramatic companies enjoyed rehearsals in the old theatre and never failed to play to packed houses. In 1855 John Godley carried an advertisement in the Independent Republican, published here by Hutchinson and Wetzel, displaying a patent burial case that added terror to the living. He advertised making furniture and Bee cases to order. On November 8th, 1860 in a copy of the Western Review published at Point Pleasant by T. Stribling and Company we find that Mr. Godley conducted an “Ambrotype Gallery,” taking ambrotypes, malentetypes, etc., miniatures set in Lockets and finger rings, Fading Daguerreotypes copies and restore to more than their prestine (sic) value.” “Pictures transferred to Patent Leather. A new type of likeness, the kind to send by mail.” Signed John Godley. Not only many old time pictures are preserved here and in the county executed by Mr. Godley but many of the original negatives that recall the past more vividly than any pen picture can paint.1 | |
