Virginia Margaret Gould was born on November 28, 1917 to Sidney Ross & Grace Gould in Frostburg, MD. She attended school in Mpls and graduated from Central High School. She then went into training to become a registered nurse at St. Barnabas Hospital. When her training was completed she entered the Army as a Lieutenant serving until her marriage to Tommie Glenn Stemm Jr. in Sept. 1942. Virginia's career after the Army began at the Veterans Hospital at Ft. Snelling. She moved to Florida in the early sixties and worked for the Veteran Hospitals as a nurse until her retirement in 1988. She moved back to Minnesota several years after her retirement to be closer to family and friends. Ginny was an avid golfer and traveler. She enjoyed spending time on the water whenever possible and socializing with friends and relatives. She is survived by her brother, Howard Gould; sister, Ruth Garlock; son, Tommie G. III (Linda); five grandchildren, (Tom IV, Jeff, Alyicia, Mara & Regina); and many nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Annie and Helen. A memorial service 11 AM, Friday, July 9 with visitation 1 hour prior at the Good Samaritan Methodist Church, 5730 Grove St., Edina, MN. Interment will be in the Good Samaritan Peace Garden following the service. Memorials can be sent to the Good Samaritan Church, the Minnesota Arboretum or the charity of your choice. Biography* | From: American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, September 1979: Howard R. Gould, research scientist, Exxon Production Co., was born in Adrain, West Virginia, November 10,1921. His dedication to the profession of geology is clearly indicated by a lifetime of accomplishments. He received his bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Minnesota in 1943. For the next 3 years he served as marine geologist and oceanographer for the University of California Division of War Research and as a special consultant to the U.S. Navy. In this latter assignment he advised submarine officers on the utilization of oceanographic and geologic information prior to a daring raid in the Sea of Japan by nine U.S. submarines in 1945. Following World War II Howard pursued additional studies at the University of California, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and then completed the requirments for a doctor's degree at the University of Southern California in 1953. | |

VA and grew up in Minneapolis, MN. He received his B. A. from the University of Minnesota and Ph. D. from the University of Southern California, both in geology. He began his career during World War II with the University of California Division of War Research, where he served as an Engineer-Technician with the U.S. Navy Submarine Force. After the war, he worked as a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and Professor of Oceanography at the University of Washington before joining Humble Oil and Refining Company (now Exxon-Mobil) in 1956 as a geologist in Houston. He subsequently became Manager of Geologic Research for Humble before his promotion to Research Scientist at Exxon Production Research Company, in which capacity he served until his retirement in 1986. He was active in numerous national and international geoscience organizations and societies, including the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and SEPM (Society for Sedimentary Geology), elected Honorary Member in both. He also served as President of the Geological Society of America in 1981 and President of the American Geological Institute in 1984. Preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Bradley Gould, he is survived by his son, Bradley H. Survived by loving & devoted wife of 61 years, Ruth; daughters, Susan Kenfield (Steve), Ginny Garlock; sons, Rich (Jean) and Steve (Pam); sister, Janet Garlock; brother, Bruce Edward Garlock (Ruth); 9 grandchildren, 3 great- grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. The family celebrates his happy, wonderful life which included service as a U.S. Navy Pilot in WW II and leadership of the family business - Garlock Equipment Co. A memorial service was held in Stuart, FL on Friday, Nov. 26. A private family burial will take place at Lakewood Cemetery, Saturday, Dec. 4. The family will hold a reception of remembrance on Sunday, Dec. 5 at Interlachen Country Club from 4-6 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, 1500 S. Kanner Hwy, PO Box 539, Stuart, FL 34995.3 |
