| Note* | Clarissa's death certificate and her obituary list her father as Wallace Kendall and her mother as Lisa Childs. Her son, Russell T. Stokes was the informant. The name "Lisa Childs" does not jive with census and other records... so it's listing here is a mystery waiting to be unravelled. Perhaps Della Warren's mother?5 | |

| Biography | 1886 | Historical and Biographical Record of Black Hawk County, Iowa. Chicago: Inter-State Pub. Co., 1886 p. 353 Wesley S. Stokes, a prominent agriculturist of Orange Township, residing on section 8, is a native of Putnam County, Indiana, born April 8, 1844. When he was four years of age his parents, Robert F. and Sally Ann Stokes, settled in McDonough County, Illinois, and there his mother died in 1855, aged forty-one years. Wesley S. spent his youth in assisting his father on the farm, and attending school during the winter months. As soon as he was old enough he volunteered in defense of the Union, enlisting in Company I, One Hundred and Twenty-fourth Illinois Infantry, August 12, 1862. He participated in the campaign and battles leading to the siege and capture of Vicksburg, and later was in the campaign against Johnston’s army. His regiment being transferred to the Gulf department, he participated in the campaign against Mobile in 1865, and was in the assault and capture of Spanish Fort, where he acted as Colorbearer. During his three years of service he only off duty three days. He was honorably discharged, being mustered out at Chicago as Sergeant, August 15, 1865. After the war he went to Henderson County, Illinois, his parents having moved to that county during his absence. He was married in that county February 12, 1868, to Mary C. Grigsby, a native of Muskinghum County, Ohio, daughter of John and Jane Grigsby. Mrs. Stokes died June 1, 1883, leaving five children – Edward E. and Ella E. (twins), Ida M., Clara E. and Arthur E., who died December 31, 1884, in his ninth year. After his marriage Mr. Stokes made his present residence his home, and commenced improving his prairie farm of 200 acres. This farm is now classed among the finest improved farms in this part of Black Hawk County, and building improvements are not excelled in this neighborhood. Mr. Stokes was again married, February 22, 1885, taking for his second wife Rebecca Miller. She was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, December 31, 1845, a daughter of Jonas and Sarah Miller. When she was five years old her mother died. Her father subsequently married again and settled in Orange Township in 1875, where he died in June, 1881, in his seventy-third year, after which his widow returned to Pennsylvania. In politics Mr. Stokes affiliates with the Republican party. He is at present a member of the Board of Township Trustees, and is one of the township’s most esteemed citizens. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and his wife belongs to the German Baptist church.5 |

| Death* | 10 Nov 1905 | at Clara and Calvin J. Miller's house, Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., Iowa, Cause of death: General Tuberculosis. Obit: preceded by an attack of typhoid fever. Waterloo Daily Courier, 10 November 1910 W.S. STOKES PASSES AWAY Prominent Resident of Waterloo Dies at Noon Today. Ex-County Supervisor and Veteran of Civil War. Wesley S. Stokes, a resident of Black Hawk county for 37 years, a former member of the board of supervisors of Black Hawk county and one of the well known citizens of Waterloo, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C.J. Miller, 745 Washington street, at 12:10 p.m. today after an illness extending over a period of one year. His death was due directly to an attack of typhoid fever last December. He apparently recovered from the disease but tubercular complications resulted and eventually caused his death. Two minor operations were performed but no permanent benefits resulted. He resigned as a member of the board of supervisors several weeks ago and upon advice of his physician went to Colorado with the hope that the mountain climate would prove beneficial. After a stay of five weeks in Colorado during which time he grew steadily worse his physician advised him to return to his home. At the time this advice was given the physician in charge informed the patient that he had but a short time to live, stating that it would be better for him to return home and enjoy the companionship of his family and children. Mr. and Mrs. Stokes arrived home just a week ago. Their home in this city being occupied, they went to the home of their daughter, Mrs. Miller. It was not known that he was so dangerously ill and his death will come as a sad surprise to the many friends of the deceased in this vicinity. Wesley S. Stokes was a native of Putnam county, Indiana. He was born April 8, 1844. When he was four years of age his parents moved to McDonough county, Ill. where his mother died in 1855. Deceased spent youth on his father’s farm and attending the district school during the winter months. He volunteered in defense of the Union in the civil war, enlisting in Company I, One Hundred and Twenty-fourth Illinois infantry, August 12, 1862. He participated in Grant’s Mississippi river campaign and took part in the siege of Vicksburg. Later he was with his regiment in the campaign against Gen Johnston. He was transferred to the Gulf department and took part in the campaign against Mobile and the assault on Spanish Fort. During his three years of service he was only off duty three days, and he was mustered out as a sergeant, August 15, 1865. After the war he moved to Henderson county, Illinois, and resided with his father for a time. He was married there Febraury 12, 1868, to Mary C. Grigsby. Mrs. Stokes died June 1, 1883, leaving five children Edwin E. and Ella (twins), Ida M., Clara E. and Arthur E. who died December 21, 1884, in his ninth year. Deceased came to Black Hawk county in 1868, settling in Orange township, where he made his home up to the time of his removal to this city several years ago. He was married a second time to Rebecca Miller, on February 22, 1885, who survives. In politics Mr. Stokes had always been a republican and he served his party in the capacity of township trustee, county supervisor, and other offices of trust. He was a member of the M.E. church, being a constant worshipper at the First church in this city. He was a loyal and earnest member of the G.A.R. and was one of the leading spirits in the local post, taking an active interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the Grand Army. Two years ago he was elected a member of the board of supervisors from Waterloo township. After several months of service as a member and chairman of the board he resigned the office on account of ill health. The surviving children, all residents of Black Hawk county, are Mrs. C.J. Miller, Waterloo; Miss Ella Stokes, Waterloo; Mrs. Louis Miller, Orange township and Edward E., of Orange township. Besides the immediate family Mr. Stokes leaves three brothers and one sister. The brothers are Milton, of Terre Haute, Ill.; who arrived in Waterloo last night; Russell T. of Kansas City; and Melville of Welda, Kansas. The sister, Mrs. R.B. Sindle, resides at Terre Haute, Ind. The funeral arrangements have not been made, but will be announced in tomorrow’s papers. Since it was the request of Mr. Stokes, the funeral will probably be conducted by Robert Anderson post.
