Biography* | From: dianthus120 Feb 19, 2017 Re: Edwin Wallace Kendall Article From: The Drumheller Mail, Drumheller, Alberta, Canada, 17 June 1937 E.W. Kendall, Drumheller's Oldest Resident, Celebrates 100th Birthday Wednesday. Members of Horseshoe Canyon Women's Institute Holding "Open House" on June 23, to Commemorate Birthday of Centenarian; Pioneered in Three Great Farming Districts. Next Wednesday, June 23, will be a great day for E.W. Kendall, popularly and lovingly called "Grandpa" Kendall, who on that day will attain the age of one hundred years, if spared by the grace of God. When interviewed by a Mail representative one year ago, he told how eagerly he was looking forward to his hundredth birthday, and hoping that he would live that long, although he realized that his daughter, Mrs. Charlotte K. Davis, with whom he resides on Third street west, had a real-sized job in taking care of him. "Grandpa" is not able to get about very much now, as in the past few years he has become quite enfeebled and is unable to walk. In fair weather he is taken out quite a lot in his wheel chair, and often gets a ride in the family car, which he greatly enjoys. His sight is quite good and daily he reads the Bible and keeps track on government doings at Edmonton. He enjoys reading letters received from his grand-children and great-grand-children. He has a surviving cousin, 89 years old, living at La Moilde, Illinois, who recently sent "Grandpa" a photograph of his grandparents, reproduced from an old-fashioned daguerreotype. Mr. Kendall is quite deaf and uses an amplifier type of ear phone. For many years past, members of the Horseshoe Canyon Women's Institute have paid honor to "Grandpa" Kendall by arranging a dinner or picnic on his birthday. On his ninetieth birthday, a huge banquet was given by these ladies in Drumheller, which was attended by many citizens from all walks of life, as well as a large number from the 'Over the Hill' district. At that time he was presented with a silver-mounted walking stick, which he used daily for the next six years. In his ninety-seventh year, "Grandpa" had to give up walking to any extent, as his legs were gradually getting weaker and weaker with advancing age. This year the Horseshoe Canyon W.I. have planned to hold "Open House" for Mr. Kendall, at his Third street west residence, next Wednesday, the day of his one hundredth birthday. Born in United States Mr. Edwin Wallace Kendall was born on his grandfather's farm near the village of Pessumsic, Vermont, on June 23, 1837. His mother was born near Morristown, Vermont, and so far as Mr. Kendall can remember, his father was born on the same farm as the former. His mother taught school and his father was a school director. When Mr. Kendall was still a baby, his father moved to Perkin's Grove, Illinois, where rich prairie country had been advertised, secured land and returned to Vermont for his family. They trekked over the country to their new home in a covered wagon. This place was about seventy miles west of Chicago, but there were no railways west of that city at that time. After Mr. Kendall's father died, his mother sold everything she could, paid off all due accounts and went back to school teaching. She married again when Mr. Kendall was seven years of age and her second husband became a prosperous farmer. Mr. Kendall lived with them until he became of age. With $500 bequeathed to him from his father's estate, Mr. Kendall, as a young man, invested it in land, which he later resold at a profit of five dollars per acre. He then bought some timber land and sold wood to many of the district. It was in this part of Illinois that Mr. Kendall raised all his family. | |

Death* | 3 Oct 1937 | Drumheller, Alta, Alberta, Canada; Cause of death: Intestinal Influenza Waterloo Daily Courier, Waterloo, Iowa; 6 October 1937 KENDALL, FORMER OWNER PROSPECT HILLS, DIES AT 100 Funeral of Ex-Waterloo Man Held Wednesday in Alberta Edwin Wallace Kendall, 100 years old, former owner of the farm that was subdivided into the Prospect Hills residential area of Waterloo in 1910, died Sunday afternoon of intestinal influenza at his home in Drumheller, Alberta, Can., relatives here have been informed. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday in Drumheller, and the body will be brought to Waterloo for burial beside the grave of his wife in Elmwood cemetery. It is expected to arrive Saturday, accompanied by members of the family. Mr. Kendall came to Waterloo from Marshall county, Iowa, in 1890, purchasing the farm from James Hetzler and other members of the Hetzler family. The Kendall farm home, of stone construction, was at the present 410 Sunset road. Remodeled and enlarged, it is now the home of B.F. Swisher, sr. Land sold in 1909 Mr. Kendall sold the land in 1909 to William Galloway, who carried out the subdivision project. The late centenarian was born in Vermont June 23, 1837. He came west as a youth, and married Miss Della Warren in Bureau county, Ill., in 1865. They made their home in Marshall county for many years before coming to Waterloo. Mrs. Kendall died in Waterloo in 1890, shortly after the family moved here. Leaving Waterloo after selling his land here, he went to Rosebud, Alberta, where he bought a large ranch. Later he acquired other land properties in Canada. He had been an invalid, confined to a wheel chair, in recent years, but frequently was taken on visits to his ranches. Last June he was able to enjoy the celebration of his one hundredth birthday, and recognized his relatives and friends and visited with them. Daughter Lives Here Two Iowa daughters, mrs. Edward E. Stokes, who resides in Orange township, near the end of Sheridan road, and Mrs. Lucy Chamberlain of Lester, Lyons county, Ia., attended the birthday celebration. Also surviving are two other daughters, Mrs. Arthur Davis, with whom he resided in Drumheller, and Mrs. Hattie Tuft of Rouleau, Saskatchewan, and 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. A son, Herman Kendall, who resided at 235 Derbyshire road in Waterloo, died three years ago. Mr. Kendall was a member of the Baptist faith and attended First Baptist church in Waterloo. Note: some records list his date of death as 6 October 1937, which is when notice of his death in Canada was published in Waterloo. However, the news article says he died on Saturday afternoon, which calculates to 3 October 1937.8,12,3,13 |

Death* | 12 Jul 1932 | Chadwick, Carroll Co., Illinois; Thompson Review, July 14, 1932 Rites for Mrs. E. Hartman Will Be Held Friday Rites for Mrs. E. Harman will be held tomorrow Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Hartman, 87, who passed away at her home Tuesday after a sudden heart attack, will be held Friday afternoon from the Hope church in Chadwick. Mrs. Hartman, who has always been in exceptionally good health for a person of her age, had worked in the garden Monday afternoon and evening and appeared to be in the best of health. Tuesday morning she was about as usual, but late in the afternoon suffered a sudden heart attack and passed away before aid could be given. Had she lived another month she would have observed her 88th birthday anniversary. The body was removed to the Henry Frank and Son funeral parlors, and prepared for burial. She was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, Aug. 18, 1844, and came to the United States at the age of twelve. The family has since lived in this state. She was married to Henry Hartman in September 1866 and they lived on a farm until his death in 1904. Mrs. Harman then moved to Chadwick. Two children Katie and George also preceded her in death. Mrs. Hartman, who is the widow of Henry Hartman, has been a resident of Fair Haven township for a number of years. After the death of her husband she sold the farm southwest of Chadwick and purchased the propoerty and house across from the Henry Frank home. For the past twenty odd years she has lived in the village of Chadwick with her daughter, Miss Mary Hartman. She was a devout and faithful member of the Hope Evangelical church, and always at services, no matter what the weather. She is survived by three sons, Henry of this place, John of Garden City, S.D., Jake of Waterloo, Ia; six daughtes, Mrs. John Zugschwerdt and Mrs. Louis Backman of Garden City, S.D., Mrs. Wesley Kness of Thomson, Mrs. A.C. Burke of Waterloo, Ia., Mrs. George Traum of Mt. Carroll and Miss Mary Hartman of Chadwick. She was "Grandma Hartman" to a host of youngsters of the present generation and to a great many of the Chadwick folks who now have children of their own. She was always pleasant and kind, with a cheerful world for everything. her presence will be missed by young and old alike. Thomson Review, July 21, 1932 Mrs. Elizabeth Hartman Laid to Rest In Chadwick Cemetery Friday A host of sorrowing friends and relatives of Mrs. Elizabeth Hartman gathered at her house and at the Hope church Friday afternoon to pay their respects to the friend of mankind who had passed on the Eternal Life. The solemn and beautiful funeral services were held under the direction of Rev. S. G. Eberly, assisted by Rev. G. Wykle of Geneseo. Interment was made in the Chadwick Cemetery. Members of the Rahn quartet, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Rahn, Miss Kathryn Rahn and Elmer Rahn, sang three hymns which had been favorites of the deceased, in a splendid manner. The songs were “In The Sweet Bye and Bye,” “Asleep in Jesus,” and “Farewell Mother.” Floral offerings of all sizes and of rare fragrance surrounded the casket at the home, showing that during her long and useful life Mrs. Hartman had made a great many friends who had now assembled to show their love for a kindly soul who had answered her Master’s call. Mrs. Elizabeth Hartman, nee Reister, was born in Hessen Darmstadt Germany, August 18, 1844, and died at her home in Chadwick, Illinois July 12, 1932, at the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 25 days. At the age of 12 years, she with her parents bid farewell to their native country and came to America, where they sought greater liberties and better conveniences in making a livelihood for themselves. They located in the vicinity of Chadwick where she has spent her entire life. In September 1866, she was united in marriage to Henry Hartman. (Transcriber’s Note: The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index gives the date as November 13, 1866.) God blessed this union with eleven children, four sons and seven daughters, At the age of twenty years Mother Hartman gave her heart and life to God, and united with the Evangelical church, of which she has been a loyal and faithful member until death. Her long and useful life in the church, during which she was always willing and ready to do such things as she could in honor of her God, has impressed her influence for righteousness both upon the youth and the aged. Her life was not an easy one strewn with flowers and sunshine, as well one knows she reared a large family, but one of trials and heartaches. But in all this she never lost faith in God, who was a great comfort and help to her. Her fellowship with God molded her character and disposition in a marvelous way, and made her a most kind and affectionate mother, friend, and neighbor. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her deep loss three sons and six daughters: Mrs. John Zugschwerdt, John Hartman and Mrs. Lewis Bachman, all of Garden City, S. D.; J, W. Hartman and Mrs. A. C. Burke of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. George Traum of Mt. Carroll; Mrs. Wesley Kness of Thomson, Henry Hartman of Chadwick and Miss Mary Hartman at home. Thirty-eight grandchildren and thirty-seven great-grandchildren as well as many other relatives and friends also survive. Her husband, one daughter, Katie, and a son, George, preceded her in death. Pall bearers were Etter Humbert, Hiram George, W. J. Schreiner, David Gipe, O, H, Imel, and John Frank.13,6 |

Death* | 26 Nov 1901 | Johntown, Cambria Co., Pennsylvania; Cause of death: Child Bed Fever On death certificate, town or township of death is listed as Johnston ___? The 2nd word isn't legible. I'm not sure what place this is. Semi-Weekly Waterloo Courier, 29 November 1901: MRS. HILLOCK DEAD Daughter of Samuel Smith Dies at Johnstown, Pa. (From Wednesday’s Daily.) A telegram received yesterday from Johnstown, Pa., announced the death at that place of Mrs. Nora E. Hillock, daughter of Samuel Smith of Orange township. The wire conveyed no particulars concerning the young lady’s illness and the parents and relatives can only conjecture what the cause of death might be. Mr. and Mrs. Hillock moved to Washington D.C., last spring where the gentleman represented that he has a position with the United States government as inspector of army clothing. He had formerly lived for several years in Washington, being connected with the United States army and serving several years with one of the street car systems of the city. It appears that the family removed from there to Johnstown, or it may be that Mrs. Hillock, while visiting at that place, was taken sick and died. It has been several weeks since the parents have heard from their daughter. Deceased was the second oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Smith and was born in Orange township, as were all the other members of the family. Besides a husband Mrs. Hillock leaves a daughter, Lillian, three years old. The relatives here wired the authorities as Johnstown to ship the body at once to this place and if the remains were started this morning they will reach here some time tomorrow. It is probable the burial will be in Orange township. Semi-Weekly Waterloo Courier, 3 December 1901 LOST BODY ON THE WAY Remains of Mrs. Thomas Hillock Located This Forenoon in Chicago – Funeral Tomorrow (From Saturday’s Daily.) The body of Mrs. Thomas Hillock started from Johnstown, Pa. last Wednesday morning, was lost on the way, though her husband and little daughter arrived in the City last night. It was not known definitely where the remains were until Agent Ham by telegraphing this morning located them in Chicago. They will be started toward Waterloo this afternoon and reach here on the 3 o’clock train tomorrow morning. The funeral which had been appointed for this forenoon at 10:30 at the South Waterloo Dunkard church brought out a goodly number of people who were told the circumstances. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at the same hour at the same place. It appears that the Eastern Passenger association could carry the body only to Chicago where it was to be taken charge of by the Western association, and no one looking after the matter, the corpse remained in the office in Chicago. It would be considered a sheer piece of carelessness for a friend to set out to accompany a body to a certain destination and lose the corpse on the way. Much more should such carelessness be condemned in one whose relationship is that of husband and wife. It is reported that Mr. Hillock states, however, that he saw the body transferred in Chicago.8,3,12 |

She was 78 years old and had been bedfast most of the time during the last two weeks. Her husband died six years ago.
