| Milit-Beg* | c 1812 | "The San Antonio", Portsmouth, England, In the War of 1812, Asa shows up as an impressed American seaman who had received sentence by the British for acting contrary to the British Government. He is listed as one of those on board the British prison ship "San Antonio," of Chatham, at Portsmouth, England. He is interestingly enough, listed as being from Carolina, captured aboard the "Stag," and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. How he got there, and how he got out other than at the end of the war are still unknown. In the rather long list of over 450 men, only Virginia, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and Carolina show up as places of origin. It is of course possible that whoever recorded the information in England mistook Connecticut for Carolina. |

| Employment | 1860 | Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan, C.O. Budington was an enumerator for the 1860 Mortality Census for Kent Co., MI for these townships: Wyoming, Paris, Lowell, Cascade, Bowne, Byron, Ada, Caledonia, Gaines, Lowell Village, Vergennes.
He described conditions:
Remarks: This district known as the 2nd Representative District of Kent County comprising the towns named in this schedule, is a region of County possessing all the surroundings that conduce to health - the surface is rolling sometimes rising to hills from some of which Lake Michigan can be seen though 35 miles away. Next the country abounds with springs of pure water of icy coldness some of which discharges 150 gallons per minute. In visiting over 10,000 persons I have not seen six cases of sickness. Mad dogs passed through some parts of this district in July, and some 20 head of cattle and many hogs were bitten, and died with Hydrophobia, but fortunately no person met with misfortune. This district was visited in 1859 in months of June, July and August with heavy frost though not general - the crops of one farmer were almost totally destroyed and the next contiguous were not injured. Soil - clay - sand - sand loam - clay loam. Timber - oak - maple - beech - ash - black walnut. COB AS11 |

Jonathan Budington1
M, b. 1 October 1732, d. 5 June 1810
| Birth* | 1 Oct 1732 | Groton, Connecticut1,2 |
| Marriage* | | Principal=Priscilla Hyde1,2 |
| Residence* | 8 May 1753 | Norwich, Connecticut, It appears that Jonathan moved around somewhat. While quite a young man (20 years, 7 mos) he was apparently living in Norwich CT, 16 miles upstream from Groton. His name appears on a Memorial dated May 8th, 1753 |
| Marriage* | | Principal=Hannah Buckland1,2 |
| Employment* | a 1776 | New London Co., Connecticut, Along with his son, Jonathan was a Privateer during the Revolution. They sailed out of New London and Norwich, CT. Several records are available in London, England, at the British Admiralty regarding the capture by Jonathan of several British craft. His "Letter of Marque" and ships papers of the Brigantine "Favorite" are also there. Jonathan and his son Jonathan had sailed on several privateers including the "Young Cromwell," a brigantine of 12 guns and 45 men.
Son Jonathan was captured by the British whle he was Captain of the Brig "Favorite" (14 guns 130 tons, crew of 89) and held prisoner aboard the prison ship "Old Jersey," in the New York City harbor. The Brig "Favorite" was one of several vessels previously captured by cousin Eliphalet Budington and brought back to New London as a prize of war.
Captain Jonathan went aboard the "Old Jersey" under a flag of truce to see what could be done to care for his only son, Captain Jonathan and to secure his release by ransom. He arrived too late, as young Jonathan had already died, and his body, like that of so many of the prisoners of the British, was cast into the bay.
The elder Captain Jonathan kept up his sea-faring career a little longer, and at about age fifty gave it all up and moved to Leyden, Mass., with his wife Priscilla.3 |
| Residence | a 1782 | Leyden, Massachusetts, As a trader in the West Indies, before and after the War, Captain Jonathan sold a quantity of goods to a merchant in Deerfield, Mass. The merchant being unable to pay in cash, offred a tract of land in Bernardston Gore, and aread being settled and later to be called Leyden, MA. The property he received from the Deerfield merchant was a thickly-wooded tract in the South district.
There is a family story of how Jonathan moved to Leyden, but it surely is not true. It was said that he was so disenchanted with the sea after the death of his only son that he put a pair of whaleboat oars over his shoulder and started walking west. When someone asked him what was on his shoulder, he figured he was far enough from the sea to stop.3 |

Mary Ann Budington1,2
F, b. 16 May 1809, d. circa 1844
| Biography* | | JEAHR: Mary got the school in that district and as they lived a long ways from the school, she boarded with Mrs. Frank. They say she was fine looking with a fair complexion and light brown hair and blue eyes. After a few months she was taken down suddenly with a Rover and Mrs. Frank took care of her, and after she became better, she declared that it was to Mrs. Franks kind care, she owed her life, and she wondered what she could do to repay her. Mrs. Frank was wishing one day that some one would give her a baby girl which she could adopt as her own. Mary Buddington said "Mrs. Frank, I am going to give you a solemn promise, if I ever get married and have any children, the first girl I have, I shall give to you to adopt and have for your very own, to return your kindness in saving my life." Mrs. Frank only laughed, but she little thought it would ever come true. Strange as it may seem her brother Aaron came about that time to see his sisters Laura Ann and Joannah. He was a lively young fellow, with black eyes and black curly hair. He was always good natured and full of fun, and as soon as he set his eyes on the blue eyed Mary he fell in love at first sight. It was not many months after, when Mary Buddington became the wife of Aaron Adams, and they went to keeping house in a little new log house on the 40 acres of land that Aaron took as his share of the estate of his father. In the first few years of their married life they had two boys and one died and then there was a baby girl. Jacob Frank and Joannah had gone that fall to New Jersey where he had work in a glass factory to earn money to help build on the farm at Mt. Morris. In the month of January she had a letter from Mary, her brothers wife that they had a little girl who was born on December 28, 1831. She said the baby was hers (if she wanted it) and to send it a name and she would take care of it, until Mrs. Frank wanted to take her home as her very own. She told her the baby was a pretty black eyed little girl. Mrs. Frank sent her the name of Joannah Elisabeth, and when she was two years old the Franks came back to the old place. They were very much pleased with this little Elisabeth, and wanted to have her for their own but Mrs. Frank hesitated about holding Mary to her promise made some years ago. She saw that the family of her brother thought so much of the little girl and she and her brother Gaylord took so much comfort playing together. Her brother Oscar Henry was born that winter and they sent the little Lizzie (as they called her) up to the big house to stay a few days. Then her father came after her to see her little brother. After she had looked at him she wanted to go back, but a terrible storm came so she could not be taken that night. Lizzie cried and made such a fuss that in the morning her father took her back. When they got in sight of the house, Mrs. Frank was out on the porch, and as soon as Lizzie saw her she jumped down from her fathers arms and run as fast as she could saying to her father, "There's my Ma," and she would not go back to stay at home again. Her mother said Joannah should keep her.
The writer of these memories was that little Lizzie Adams, named by my Aunt Joannah, Joannah Elisabeth Adams. When I was a small girl my Uncle Jacob Frank and Aunt Joannah went for a few years to Keene, New Hampshire, where he had work in a large glass factory. He wanted to earn money to pay the, debts on the farm as they had bought off the Heirs. My Uncle Gaylord Willsey and Aunt Laura Ann staid on the farm. I was adopted into the family of Jacob and Joannah Frank December 18th, 1833.
While we were away my father sold his 40 acres, and moved to a part of Michigan which was then a new country and in a dense forest. I think it was near a place called Flint and new folks the Buddingtons had moved there some time before. I never saw my mother as I can remember) but when we took the stage to go to the Genesee Valley Canal to go to Rochester on our journey to Keene, I looked out of the stage window and I saw a woman standing a ways over a field, by a fence, with her apron over her eyes. I think it must have been my mother looking up to the road to see as go away and it was the last time she ever saw her little daughter.1 |

| Residence | a 1806 | Groton, Connecticut, Description by granddaughter, Adeline Elizabeth Wheeler, of visits to the old farm in Groton:
"It was a Paradise to us, we fished in the pond and waded in the brook, Picked huckleberries in summer ate butternuts from the wide old tree by he stoop door. There used to be a 'spicing' apple tree 'next to it, but gone now. We gathered shag walnuts, chestnuts and hazel nuts in autumn, we ate apples and drank a little new cider, which made us dizzy for &while. The old orchard was then died out and only two or three barrels of cider were then made from the few trees. Enough for moderate use and a barrel perhaps of vinegar. 'Uncle Gil' was one of us, and liked us. He used, every evening to play on the violin, Grandmother always wanted 'Money Musk,' I liked the 'Devils Dream. ' Grandfather and wife and her brother Moses Hil I were great dancers when young and very social folk. 'The latchstring was always out.' In later years, 'Uncle Gil' was married with his flock, mostly boys, and my son and some of the other grandchildren thought it a wonderfully nice place and Aunt Hannahs cream bisquit and that 'rye shortcake' the choicest food on earth. We always wanted to go to 'Moheag Ledge', over in the pasture, east beyond the brook. Here were rocks that formed a stairway down the west side which we liked to go down. The legend of the rock was that in the fights of the Moheagans with the Pequots who were a hostile tribe, they pursued the Pequots and crowded them over the ledge to distruction. Grandfather and wife were a handsome couple, they had clear complexions. They never drank coffee only a little weak tea. Never thought of being billious neither ever called a doctor. He lived to be 82, she to 90. They had good hearing and as good eyesight as any old person. Grandmother took great pride in her beddings, her live goose feathers, her light clean comforters and the patchwork covers, so carefully pieced and beautifully quilted. I never knew her to wear a house dress, nor ever lean back in a chair.", Principal=Esther Hill5 |
