| Marriage* | Principal=William DeKay | |
| Birth* | 1807 | Connecticut |
| Note* | 17 Sep 1846 | Letter written from Harriet to her brother John, which mentions her Buddington cousins. From the "History by Hand" website at www.historybyhand.ocm Item Number: DM4099 The Letter: Sept 17th, 1846 letter from Harriet deKay to her brother John Daboll discussing family matters. Cover is addressed to “John L. Daboll / Mount Morris / Livingston Co / NY” with a blue CDS containing the words “Byron N.Y. Sep 17” Size: 15 1/2" wide x 9 3/4" high, folded to 7 3/4" wide x 9 3/4" high and written on pages 1 and 3 only. Very good condition. Background Information: The writer, Harriet (Daboll) DeKay was born in Connecticut in 1807, the daughter of Russell Daboll and Mary (Lester) Daboll. She married William DeKay, a farmer from Byron, Genesee County, New York and died in 1888. Her father, Russell Daboll, was living in Mount Morris, Livingston County by 1830. Her brother, Russell Daboll, Jr. was also a resident of Byron, Genesee County for many years. The recipient, John Lester Daboll, was Harriet’s brother, born in 1811 and was for many years a resident of Mount Morris, Livingston County, NY, as was their youngest brother, Elisha Allen Daboll, born in 1821. In the letter, Harriet describes a trip her husband William and “Jerome” had just made to Michigan and mentions the relatives they visited. “Ezra”, “Horace”, “Bonaparte”, and “John” are most likely Harriet’s and John’s first cousins, the Buddington brothers, formerly of New York and now living in Utica, Michigan. “Aunt Rhoda” is likely Rhoda Daboll, sister of Russell Daboll. She was born in Groton, Connecticut in 1782 and married Thomas A. Buddington. She was the mother of the Horace Buddington (b. 1811), Ezra Buddington, (b. 1813), Napoleon Bonaparte Buddington (b 1821) and John Daboll Buddington (b.1826) mentioned in the letter. We cannot confirm with certainty that the “Sally” mentioned is another sister of Russell Daboll (Sally Daboll Haley, 1787 – 1874). Harriet’s letter also discusses their plans to travel to Michigan in the early fall, before “…it gets to be bad going…” The reference to “Jerome” is to her son Jerome J. DeKay. Jerome DeKay was born in 1827 and died in 1848. Another son, Charles W., was 16 at the time the letter was written and is not mentioned. He remained in Byron, and was for a time the local postmaster and justice of the peace. He died in 1914. Although this branch of Harriet’s family consistently used the spelling “Daboll”, other more distant branches preferred the more common “Dibble” spelling. [Transcription of Letter] Dear Brother, We received your letter on Monday and I hope you will all get better soon. I have long looked for a letter from some of you to cheer up my drooping spirits a little if you did not come out to see me. But the long esspected has come at last and William and Jerome arrived last Sunday night about midnight. He went away from home the 13th of August and was to write so that I could get a letter in in about ten days from the time he started and I never heard a word till he come and brought it and you can judge for your self whether I was down hearted or not – it being the first time he fail’d of writing to me when he said he would. He went back to Canada and the old [Bass?] did not get the job he expected to and they concluded to take a tour to Michigan before they returned. He see Ezra and Horace Bonaparte and John Aunt Rhoda and Sally and some of our Byron friends in his route through 6 countys. And he says made a poor till enough of it too. I should like to call in and see you all and see how you get along with that Ba____ gal about this time. William is going to write to Jacob next Sunday - he wants to see about some work there is to do here and then he will know what to say to Jacob when he will be there &. William thinks we shall be out there before it gets to be bad going this fall whether he goes out there to work or not. If he goes to work Jerome will have to go with him and I cant stay so long and I may not be out till winter. William will tell you all when he comes. I am in in a great hurry about a little weaving this week and I must stop my letter short so no more at present. We are all well and keep about trying to do something so good bye for this time. Give my respects to all of our real friends, do come and see us if you can. Father and mother did not call to our house – I guess they did not go on the Holley Road. Aunt Rhoda and Ezra expects to be down this month. They were all well and in a thriving condition when William was there except Horace he was a grunting a little, &. [signed] Harriet deKay to John L. | Death* | 1 May 1869 | Michigan, Obituary published in the Jackson Daily Citizen, on Monday, 3 May 1869 (thanks to Barbara Hanson for tracking this obituary down): DIED In this city, at the residence of her son, Thomas A. Budington, after a brief illness, at 7 o'clock on the evening of May 1st, 1869, Mrs. RHODA BUDINGTON, aged 87 years and 12 days. Funeral this (Monday) afternoon at the reisdence of Thomas A. Budington, No. 83 Wesley street, at 2 o'clock P.M. Mrs. Budington was the mother of the late Walter Budington, also of E.H. and Thomas A. Budington. Her husband, Capt. Thos. A. Budington, died in Macomb county, Michigan, in 1841, she having survived him over a quarter of a century. Mrs. Budington was born at Groton, Connecticut, in 1782, but emigated to near Auburn, in the State of New York in 1812, and has been a resident of Michigan for the past 31 years. She retained her memory and other factulties to a remarkable degree. She was universally loved by all who knew her, living up to the injunction of Holy Writ, "Do unto others even as you would have them do unto you." Thus, after a long and well-spent life, she has gone to that bourne from whence no traveller returns and to join in heaven those of her family and friends who have gone before her. Peace to thy manes, thou good and excellent mother. COM4,11 |

Town Votes 2-7 "Those of the Dragones that have received pouches of Thomas Deble which he got made and is to be paid by ye town." MGD, p88 "Persons who gave to the poor of other colonies, Thomas Deble Sen. and Abram Deble." p. 146 Ratable List of 1686, - "house & land 3 acs yt was John Dible 13:00. In 1640 Thomas was granted land of the Plantation on which he built a house which he sold to Robert Watson. In 1670 he bought the William Hubbard house on the Palisado between Matthew Grant and _____ Phillips. There may be a connection between his wife and Thomas Ford whose daughters were Hepsibah, Joanna and Miriam, but no proof yet has been found." - VanBuren Lamb, Jr., "Your Ancestors," Vol 2, pg 143. "That Thomas was son of Robert Deeble is definitely proven on page 13 of the first book of Dorchester, Mass. land records. The grand is dated 17 Dec. 1635, at which time Thomas is to receive 2 goad and 6 goad next to his fathers Roberts home lot, if he built a house within a year. This lot faced the park next to Mr. Addertons. In Windsor, Conn. there are many records preserved concerning Thomas in the land, vital, probate, town, and church records; as well as in the diary of Matthew Grant, his next door neighbor. I find the wife of Thomas, mother of his children, referred to only as sister dibble. His second wife was widow of John Hawkes (killed by the Indians), and secondly widow of Robert Hensdale. Matthew Grants Diary, page 94 gives a list of persons now living (dated 1677) that came from Dorchester in full communion. Thomas second home lot in Windsor, Conn. was on the Palisado (village green or common), the third house N.E. of the church, between the homes of Mr. Grant and Mr. Phillips. Windsor, Conn. Town Votes, Vol. 2. pg. 7 states; "Those of the Dragones that have received pouches of Thomas Deble, which he got made and is to be paid by ye town". In 1676 Thomas Deble and Abram Deble are listed among those who gave monies to the poor of other colonies. | |

| Note* | Notes for Robert Deeble: "To return to New England - Robert Deble and his son Thomas are mentioned in a land deed in Dorchester, Mass. Dec. 17, 1635, in which Thomas is ordered to build a house within a year. This he probably did not do, for Thomas went to Windsor, Conn. With Mr. Warham who followed Thomas Hooker with the majority of his congregation. In Hotton’s "original Lists" Thomas Deble age 22, husbandman, and Frances Deble age 24 , sister, lieve(sic) England 1635 for Virginia. Pope reads "sister" as "soror", and Bank’s reads "husbandman and sister" and says they left Weymouth in Dorset Mar., 1635 under Rev. Joseph Hull, and arrived May 5th at Wessaguscus, Mass. (This name was changed in May, 1635 to Weymouth, Mass.) Robert Deeble’s signature as of 1641 appears on the frontispiece of Blanke’s Annals of Dorchester, Mass., 1846.", VanBuren Lamb, Jr., "Your Ancestors," Vol 2, pg 143. ******************************************************* "Robert Deeble was the first of this name in New England. He and his wife were early settlers of Dorchester, Mass. The first records of this town have been lost, but it is recorded that he was made a freeman on the 6 of May 1635. Robert and his wife (known only as goody deeble) evidently became members of The Dorchester Congreation which was formed in 1629 at the New hospital in Plymouth, England, under the leadership of the Rev. John Warham of Exeter. Some members of this congreation sailed from Plymouth and others embarked for America at Weymouth. The ship in Which Robert and his wife came to these shores is not known, but possibly they arrived the 24 of June 1633 with 78 other members of this congreation, for the names of these passengers are not recorded. His son Thomas Deble age 22, with Frances Deble age 24 sorer(probably meaning sister) did sail from Weymouth, Eng. on the 20 of Mar. 1635. A Robert Dabyn age 28 arrived in New Eng. in the same year and was listed as a servant to Joseph Hall. There were without doubt other brothers and sisters for during the Indian uprisings and massacres 1664-1676, Abraham Dibol(of Haddam and Simsbury, Conn.), & John Deble's family(from Springfield, Mass.), appear in Windsor, Conn. in close association with Thomas Deble. One record says Robert Deeble was a native of Somersetshire, Eng. but I can find no proof of this statement. However he is definitely from the West Counties of Eng. where there are thousands of references to the family (with as many variations of spellings as there are in America) in the church records of Devon, Dorse, Somerset, and Cornwall. There wre also hundreds of Dibble wills preserved in the Bishop of Exeters files, before World War II, which I feel certain would have given our ancestry in England back to 1400, but they were all destroyed in the "Blitz". There seems to have been a Dibble Coat-of-Arms, though it is not recorded in the College of Heralds. Arthur J. Jewrs in his Heraldic Church Notes of Cornwall, gives on page 58 the description of the arms of Deeble as "Purpure(purple)shield, three deebles or beansetters argent(silver), crest a deeble or (gold)". The arms are pictured, quartered with those of Wolsden, showing the beansetter to have been of the stirrup variety. Reverend Samuel Dibble, buried in Charles Church Yard, Plymouth, Eng. in 1750 had the above arms engraved on his tombstone, but this also was destroyed in the blitz. In old English dictionaries, before 1600, the word now spelled Dibble was spelled deeble. I find no foundation for the statement by some, that the name is of French origin(diable meaning devil) though some facetious clerks both in England and America so spelled it in the early records. I believe this to be the reason Nathan Dabol entered in his account book, "Henceforth we shall spell our name Dabol". We have few records of Robert and Thomas Deeble in Mass. The first land record for them is Jan. 4 1635 when Thomas Deeble is to receive 30 acres in the division of the hill between Roxbury and Dorchester. In Mar. 1638 Robert was appointed bayliff (tax collector) for Dorchester and continued in this post until 1641. The records of the Dorchester Congreational Church for Feb 1642 list Robert Deeble and goody deeble as original members (Plymouth, Eng. 1629). I have found no further record of them in New England. It may be possible that they returned to England with other dissatisfied members of the old congreation, after their leader and many of their friends had removed to Windsor, Conn. Robert Deeble's signature appears on the flyleaf of the History of Dorchester, Mass. In a list of original proprietors (photograph). This and the fact that he was chosen baliff is fair proof that he was a little better educated than some of the early colonists, many of whom could not write, signing their names with an X.", VanBuren Lamb, Jr., "Line of Henry Dibble."1 | |

Ebenezer died insolvent, with debts exceeding his estate. The inventory was taken 11 Feb. 1676.
