Biography*

JAF: We children used to love to sit by the warm fire in the' winter evenings, and hear Aunt Ellen tell stories about the war. I remember one incident, when the news came to my Grandma Adams (Aunt Ellens mother) that the British troops were marching through the country that she got up from a sick bed, and went down cellar. She had no sooner got into one corner of the cellar and got herself all wrapped up in a blanket, when she heard the soldiers firing at the house. When they had gone away, she came up from the cellar, and saw the head board of her bedstead was riddled full of holes.¹

MSD: Nathan's death date has not been discovered. The late Ann S. Disbrow wrote me (MSD) in 1984: "I have a copy of an IOU, which he seems to have signed a lot of, dated April 1774, and signed by Andrew Disbrow and
Nathan Disbrow. So let us say he died sometime after that. Nathan seems to have been insolvent most of the time. He had too many children to support."¹

Mortimer Smith (The Life of Ole Bull), page 104-105: In a few days he [Ole Bull] was off to New York, where the emigrant ship the Incognito had just arrived from Christiania. Persuaded by Bull's glowing eloquence, about one hundred of the immigrants from this ship set out for Oleana, their fares paid by the violinist.

Among the passengers on the Incognito was a Lutheran minister, Jacob Aall Ottesen, later to become well known as a pioneer religious worker in the Norwegian settlements of Wisconsin. He and his wife set out with Bull for Oleana, a trip he was later to describe in a long and interesting letter to a friend at home. "We were travelling," he wrote, "in the most expensive seats and there were I think six or seven carriages, that is to say about 500 persons all belonging to the better classes, among whom not one had heard of the famous artist. No, there is no art, poetry, or science here, here it's dollars and steam and that is all!" [translation of letter continues on describing the concept of the settlement Oleana].
