| Biography* | | White: The eldest son, Edward, the principal mill owner in Exeter, was lost at sea in a voyage to England in 1653; his brother John succeeded him in business and much of his property, and became one of the most useful and distinguished citizens. For more than one half the years between 1650 and 1680 he was repeatedly elected Commissioner, to end small causes, and was Associate (judge) of the old Norfolk County Court for two years. In 1680 he was made Councillor of New Hampshire, and was Judge of the Court of Pleas. He was a delegate to the assembly and twice Speaker of the House. The town records show that John Gilman was first among the able and respected citizens, and that the Gilmans at all times were unwavering in their patriotism and love of country. He built the "log house" still standing opposite the great bridge; also the Clifford House, the oldest in town, built in 1656. The windows were scarcely more than loopholes; it was adapted against the attacks of the savages, and was known as a garrison house. In this wooden structure Councillor John lived till his death in 1708. He had six sons and ten daughters. [See Bell's History of Town of Exeter.] |

Mrs. W.A. Hubbard Passes Away at 80
Funeral services were held last Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Minneapolis chapel of the Bardwell Funeral Service for Mrs. Sarah Catherine Hubbard, a former resident of Excelsior, who passed away Wednesday, October 6, at ther home at 4525 York avenue south, Minneapolis.
Mrs. Hubbard was 80 years of age, and a native of Murray, Indiana. Her father, John. A. Glass, was a soldier in the Civil War who died shortly before she was born. When one year of age she came with her mother to the village of Dundas, Minn., and later taught in various schools in Rice county.
On November 15, 1882, at the age of 19, she was married to William A. Hubbard, and as a bride moved to New Ulm, Minn., where she lived until 1905, when she took up her residence in Minneapolis. Five years later she came to Excelsior to make her home.
She united with the Excelsior Congregational church during the pastorage of the Rev. Carl J. Swain and was active in the work of the Sunday school and the Missionary society and also in various lines of women's club work.
After remaining in Excelsior for about eight years, she returned to Minneapolis to live in the Linden Hills district where she has resided for the past 25 years. During 18 of these years she was active in church and community work, until she was taken sick seven years ago. During the past two years her health had been failing.
She is survived by four sons and two daughters, as follows: Frank J. of Watertown, S.D.; Herbert G., a lieutenant-colonel in the United States army, stationed at the Presidio, San Francisco, Calif.; Frederick A., of Omaha, Neb.; John D., at the Verteran's hospital, St. Cloud, Minn., and Mrs. Casper Olstad (Lucille) and Mrs. Peter De Vries (Elizabeth), both of Minneapolis. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Theodore Christianson, wife of theformer governor, is also a near relative.
Rev. Edward A. Drake, pastor of the Excelsior Congregational church, was the minister in charge. The music consisted entirely of organ selections played by Miss Alice Saline of Cottagewood.
The pallbearers were relatives and close friends and were Peter De Vries, Casper Olstad and Orin Perkins, of Minneapolis, Herman Owens, of South St. Paul, Frederick Hubbard, of Omaha, Neb., and Leslie Edwards, of Excelsior. The burial was in Oak Hill cemetery at Excelsior.7,3 |

He married a second cousin, Elsa Grenander, and disappeard shortly thereafter. (Elsie's first marriage was to a man from Chicago and they were divorced). Ivar and Elsie had no children, and no family we could contact had ever heard from him since. Elsie claimed to have Red Cross notification that Ivar had died in the war. She later fell in love with a Catholic man whose mother wanted proof that Elsie was in fact a widow, since she and Ivar had never divorced. On the day of the wedding this mother claimed that Ivar was alive, according to the Red Cross records. ??? No other Grenanders were able to offer any more information., Principal=Ivar Persson1 |
