Esther Hill1
F, b. 29 August 1781, d. 13 January 1872
| | Esther Hill Budington |
| Married Name | | Budington1 |
| Birth* | 29 Aug 1781 | Groton, Connecticut, She was but 8 days old when her father was killed in the Battle of Fort Griswold3 |
| Marriage* | 12 Dec 1795 | Only 14 years old at time she married., Principal=Ozias Budington1,3 |
| Residence* | bt 1797 - 1806 | Scipio, Cayuga Co., New York, Only a year or two after their marriage, esther and Ozias went to western New York State to live in what was then the wilderness. They went to Scipio, NY (now in Cayuga Co.). Scipio was formed in 1794 and was settled by a number of individuals from New London, Groton, Ledyard, and Stonington. [Note: Union Springs was eventually separated out of Scipio]
"As this was the same location that older brother [to Thomas A.] Ozias Budington lived in for a number of years, and was the area where a number of other members of the family later lived, the tie to this remote section near the finger lakes of New York should be investigated more intensly." (Nielson)
The location of Scipio was in Geneseo or about 60 miles south of Rochester, NY. Locally grown wheat had to be taken to Rochester to be ground. There were bears, wolves, and panthers in the woods. Indians (the Senecas, Iroquois and Oneidas) were still about., Principal=Ozias Budington4 |
| Residence* | 1806 | Ozias and Esther had a long house in Scipio, NY. This house was burned down one day while the family was out one day. It was reported by Clauson Budington that Ozias moved back to Groton, CT with his family, as his mother, Ruth Waterman Budington, had exchange her home with one of the Dabolls and needed Ozias to help run the farm. They moved back in 1805, after the birth of their daughter, Esther Harris in April. His mother Ruth had died a few months earlier.5 |
| Residence | a 1806 | Groton, Connecticut, Description by granddaughter, Adeline Elizabeth Wheeler, of visits to the old farm in Groton:
"It was a Paradise to us, we fished in the pond and waded in the brook, Picked huckleberries in summer ate butternuts from the wide old tree by he stoop door. There used to be a 'spicing' apple tree 'next to it, but gone now. We gathered shag walnuts, chestnuts and hazel nuts in autumn, we ate apples and drank a little new cider, which made us dizzy for &while. The old orchard was then died out and only two or three barrels of cider were then made from the few trees. Enough for moderate use and a barrel perhaps of vinegar. 'Uncle Gil' was one of us, and liked us. He used, every evening to play on the violin, Grandmother always wanted 'Money Musk,' I liked the 'Devils Dream. ' Grandfather and wife and her brother Moses Hil I were great dancers when young and very social folk. 'The latchstring was always out.' In later years, 'Uncle Gil' was married with his flock, mostly boys, and my son and some of the other grandchildren thought it a wonderfully nice place and Aunt Hannahs cream bisquit and that 'rye shortcake' the choicest food on earth. We always wanted to go to 'Moheag Ledge', over in the pasture, east beyond the brook. Here were rocks that formed a stairway down the west side which we liked to go down. The legend of the rock was that in the fights of the Moheagans with the Pequots who were a hostile tribe, they pursued the Pequots and crowded them over the ledge to distruction. Grandfather and wife were a handsome couple, they had clear complexions. They never drank coffee only a little weak tea. Never thought of being billious neither ever called a doctor. He lived to be 82, she to 90. They had good hearing and as good eyesight as any old person. Grandmother took great pride in her beddings, her live goose feathers, her light clean comforters and the patchwork covers, so carefully pieced and beautifully quilted. I never knew her to wear a house dress, nor ever lean back in a chair.", Principal=Ozias Budington6 |

Arthur Holbridge1
M, d. 1648
| Biography* | | MSD: Arthur Holbridge, her father, was probably an emigrant from England, but at what date he settled in New Haven is unknown. Apparently the court records show that he was in trouble in 1640 for stealing and false business dealings and one source says he was publicly whipped for petty theft. After his death in 1648 his widow, with her two children, called upon the court for relief, and two years later, as mentioned earlier, she had Mercy and John baptized at the church in New Haven. |

| Biography* | 3 Oct 1661 | Fairfield, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, MSD: On the 3rd of October, 1661, Mercy Holbridge and Joseph James were brought before Mr. Nathan Gold and the Fairfield magistrates to be examined an punished for misdemeanors not stated in the record.1 |
| Biography | 27 May 1692 | Fairfield, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, A formal complaint of witchcraft was brought against Mercy Disbrow by Daniel Wescott whose servant, Catharine Branch, had "fits" and appeared to be bedeviled by two tormenters one of whom was Elizabeth Clawson and the 2nd whose description was determined to fit Mercy Disbrow.
Mercy was brought before the Commissioner and was subsequently examined for "witch marks" by a committee of six housewives who found a growth, about an inch long. Events escalated when Catharine Branch appeared in court and fell into fits... and Catharine and Elizabeth were jailed in Fairfield.
At her request, Mercy was subjected to a "witches test" on June 1st, which consisted of being bound hand and foot and put in a pond. The fact that she swam like a cork further confirmed her guilt.
She and 4 other women went to trial on September 14th 1692 and there were almost 200 witnesses against them... with accusations against Mercy ranging from causing a roasted pig to have no skin to the death of cattle and lambs to causing beer to jump out of a barrel to an accuastion that she pinched a young man's feet while he slept and later told him (by his report) "had but strength shee would teer me in peses."
It's clear that Mercy was outspoken and not much liked by her neighbors.
The jury could not reach a verdict and was told to be ready to be recalled at any time.
Meanwhile, the Connecticut General Court met in October and (probably considering the terrible executions that had taken place in Salem that summer) ruled that the water trial was unlawful and not admissable and that the "witch marks" should not be allowed as evidence unless an able physician had made the determination. They also allowed as how they thought that the accuser (Catherine Brach) was lying and that she probably had a hereditary trouble that caused her afflictions. And finally, they thought that the applying of events like the dying cattle, etc. was on very slender and uncertain ground. They signed a document which was returned to Fairfield.
The original jury was reconvened, however one of the original jurors was out of the Colony and so he was replaced with a substitute. This jury found Mercy guilty and Elizabeth not guilty. Mercy was sentenced to death, as was required by law.
A petition was raised on Mercy's behalf, with one complaint being that the 2nd Jury was illegal because of the substitute juror... and the court appointed a committee of 3 to review the trial and take such action as they saw fit. They found fault both with the altered jury and the evidence of witchcraft and, after only a short time, they issued Mercy a reprieve and stayed her execution.
On the basis of this report, Mercy was granted a final pardon.
That wasn't the end of trouble for Mercy, as in 1696 she was accused by a man named james Redfin or Redfield of having a child out of wedlock with Rev. Bulkeley. This accusation was carefully refuted in a letter which Rev. Bulkeley wrote to his nephew and it is presumed to have put the matter to rest.1 |
| Death* | bt 1713 - 1718 | A document dated 4 June 1718 states: "John Nickols and Thomas Disbrow, sons of Mercy Disbrow, later of Fairfield, dec'd..." which places her death sometime earlier than that.1 |

| Residence* | bt 1940 - 1960 | Villa Holmia, Göteborg, Sweden, Ulle-Britt Homqvist: Georg, Thore's father, bought Holmia in 1940 and moved in with wife and three sons. He had learnt grafting and bee-keeping from his father. He was immensely interested in bees and very skilful too. He changed the little house to a bee-house and had 30 beehives. He was regarded as an expert. He was skilful with his hands and very good at woodcarving. He played the violin, and very well, says Thore. Sven, the youngest wanted to learn too. He went away to his first lesson and afterwards asked his teacher when he was to come next time. NEVER was the answer.
[Georg] knew a lot about Göteborg and old times and liked to talk about it.
Unfortunately Thore´s parents had to leave their Holmia around 1960. Göteborg expended and small houses had to leave room for big houses. They got a flat in a house built on their land and the old Holmia was pulled down, but the fruit-trees, berry-bushes and the pump were left. There was a very, very big rhododendron that Thore's brother "saved". An excavator dug it up and it was moved to his house, where it was commonly admired, but when he moved he did not dig it up again.1 |

========
Text from clipped article (probably a Central Lutheran funeral bulletin):
Mrs. J.A.O. Stub, nee Aleda Hooverson, was born March 6, 1881, in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin. Her father served through the Civil War, and after receiving his discharge started a saw mill and logging industry on the Kickapoo river with Atley Peterson, who later became state treasurer of Wisconsin. Mr. Hooverson died in '81, leaving his wife and two daughters, Mabel and Aleda. Mrs. Stub was educated in the public schools of Soldiers Grove and Lutheran Ladies' Seminary, Red Wing, Minn.
Her mother, the two daughters and a foster daughter, Marie, made their home in Soldiers Grove until 1896, when they moved to Red Wing. August 26, 1902, she was married to Rev. J.A.O. Stub, then pastor in Stoughton, Wisconsin. She made her home there until 1917, when Mr. Stub resigned from his pastorate to become executive secretary for the National Lutheran Commission for Soldiers' and Sailors' Welfare, with offices in New York. The family lived in New York until the summer of 1919, when they moved to Minneapolis, where Dr. Stub had accepted the call to the newly established Central Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Stub had been failing for over three years; the last nine months especially.
She leaves beside her husband, daughters Didrikke, Mrs. J.C. Lysen of Benson, Minn., and Ann Elizabeth, all born in Stoughton, and Jack, born in New York. She also leaves her mother, Mrs. Bertha Hooverson, and sister Marie, both of St. Paul.
Mrs. Stub was a member of Central Lutheran's Woman's Guild, and Fairview and Ebenezer auxiliaries. She was also a member of the Hennepin County Child Welfare Board, and until the last six months served as chairman of the Mothers' Allowance Committee.
Her departure from this life came peacefully and quietly the evening of June 13, in the presence of her husband, children, mother and sister. She was entirely conscious up until the very last.
She herself made all the arrangements for her funeral services.
She passed away very calmly and unafraid, in the Christian's blessed hope of eternal life through Jesus Chirst our Savior.
Blest be her memory! |
