Mrs. Burlingame variously reports his date of death as 5 October 1902 and 25 January 1887. Active in Republican politics and belonged to the Presbyterian church.1
| Death* | 25 Jan 1887 | Troy, Walworth Co., Wisconsin, Mr. E.A. Hubbard Died in Troy, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, January 25, 1887, Mr. E.A. Hubbard, in the 63rd year of his age. Mr. Hubbard was born in Greene county, New York March 12, 1824. When he was but two years of age his parents removed to Livingston county, where he continued to reside till reaching manhood. In 1845 he was united in marriage with Miss Eliza Kinney. In the same year he came to Wisconsin and located in the north-western part of the town of East Troy, where he remained some two years. In 1847 he purchased his farm in Troy, where he continued to reside until the time of his death. Mr. Hubbard's death was quite sudden and unexpected. Many of his neighbors and friends had not even heard of his sickness. He had been unusually well until about a week before his death. He was then a little indisposed by a cold from which he thought to recover in a day or two. Soon his family detected some symptoms of erysipelas, of which he had before had some experience. On the Thursday before his death they called a physician. Still there was no thought of any danger, nor any special anxiety as to the result. Some two hours before his death came the first intimation of danger. A son living but two miles away, and a daughter visiting frineds a few miles distant were summoned, but did not reach home till their father had breathed his last. Mr. Hubbard had been a resident of Troy almost forty years. He had gained the confidence and respect of his neighbors and fellow-citizens. He had occupied positions of local trust, in which he had been found faithful. He was a throughtful, intelligent, upright member of society. In early years he had been connected with the Presbyterian church of East Troy, but in later years had not been connected with any church. His wife, who had been his companion for more than 40 years, four sons and two daughters survive to mourn his loss. His funeral was attended on Thursday morning, and a goodly number of neighbors and friends gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed and bear him away to his final resting place.1,14,8,15,6 |

| Biography | Redwood Falls, Redwood Co., Minnesota, USA, A rather strange coincidence is the fact that my first school teacher married Fannie's brother Frank, who was the principal of the schools in Redwood. little did he think when he used to punish me for insubordination that I would one day be his brother-in-law. I remember one time he made me stand on a dunce stool for three days with a split stick on my nose. I would wiggle my nose and the stick would fall off. frank would laugh with the scholars and pretty soon would come and put the stick back on my nose. Maybe that's what makes my nose so unsightly now. The author is C.W. Buxton, who married Frances (Fannie) Rowe. Fannie Rowe's half-brother was Frank Hubbard. The schoolteacher referenced above is Minnie Ayer who married Frank Hubbard.9 | |

| Marriage* | 26 Aug 1884 | Baptist Church, Lodi, Columbia Co., Wisconsin, USA, Editor, Lodi Valley News: Nuptials. Hubbard-Ayer One of the most delightful events in the history of Lodi, occurred at the Baptist church on Tuesday evening last, in the public celebration of the marriage of Prof. F.V. Hubbard, of Redwood Falls, Minn., and Miss Minnie L. Ayer, one of Lodi's choicest daughters. This is the bride's native village, and her cheerful disposition, coupled with a circumspect life, had won for her a host of friends who seemed to vie with each other in trying to make the occasion one to be long and pleasantly remembered, an effort to which nature lent aid by making Tuesday one of the brightest and balmiest of the season. A public invitation having been extended to the friends, the response was most hearty, and long before the appointed hour, the church was filled. Promptly at eight o'clock the bridal party, consisting of the bride and groom and four attendants, viz: Misses Sue Ayer and Grace Richards and Messrs. George Ayer and H.N. Simons, entered, and passed up the aisle, responsive to the music of Mendelssohn's Wedding March - Mrs. T.E. Lewis, of Baraboo, presiding at the organ - taking their places under the florally decorated arch. Rev. S.S. Utter, the Baptist clergyman, quickly and gracefully sanctioned the plighted vows, and welded the marriage bonds nevermore to be severed. Then followed congratulations, warm, cheerful, and abundant. The bridal party then repaired to the home of the bride's parents, where a reception was tendered the relatives; but the after-supper chat and merry songs must be cut short, for the train was approaching which was to bear away the newly married couple on their bridal trip. We must not fail to speak of the floral decorations, which were elaborate and beautiful, and though arranged by members of the church where the marriage took place, great credit and thanks are due members of other churches, who so cheerfully and generously contributed plants and flowers. Indeed, the lavish kindness of friends has signally marked the whole affair, and Minnie cannot fail to go to her new home with sweet memories of her last days in the home of her childhood., Bride=Minnie Lois Ayer11,12,5,13,10,14,15 |

| Death* | 27 Aug 1901 | Backyard, Redwing, Goodhue Co., Minnesota, Text of 3 articles about his death which were published on the same day in the Redwood Reville newspaper, August 1901: In section called "News of the Northwest": His Neck Broken Superintendent Hubbard of The Red Wing Schools is Killed Accident in his own Dooryard While Engaged in Directing a Workman Who is Levelling the Lawn With a Scraper. He is Hit on the Head by the Lever of the Scraper and Instantly Killed - Was a Well-Known Educator Red Wing, Minn., Aug. 28, - F.V. Hubbard, superintendent of the Red Wing schools, was instantly killed yesterday afternoon in his own dooryard. He had been remodeling the house and was directing August Nelson's work with a horse scraper on the lawn. It is an affair that dumps its load by unhooking a lever. The driver had some trouble with it, and Mr. Hubbard, who was in haste to be done, tried to help him. He unhooked it, the load of dirt threw the scraper over suddenly and the end of the lever hit him in the back of the head, breaking his neck. He died instantly. He had been superintendent here [Red Wing] six years; before that nine years in Waseca and six years in Redwood Falls. He stood high among the school men of the state, was one of the vice presidents of the state teachers' association, an officer of the National Association of Superintendents, and was a leading candidate for state superintendent of Minnesota last winter. He was forty-six years old and a graduate of Whitewater normal. his wife and four sons survive him. Local article, same paper: F.V. Hubbard Killed. Former Principal of Redwood Schools Meets a Violent Death. F.V. Hubbard, superintendent of the Red wing, Minn., public schools, was killed Tuesday while at work in his door yard. He was superintending some grading operations at the time. The machine was a grader on wheels which is unloaded by means of a lever. Mr. Hubbard was assisting the driver, when the lever was released and struck him on the back of the head, breaking his neck and causing instant death. Mrs. L.N. Rowe, of this city, Mr. Hubbard's mother, was informed by wire of the accident and in company with her daughter, Miss Lucy Rowe, left for Red Wing Wednesday. The funeral is to take place today. Mr. Hubbard was born in Wisconsin in 1856 and obtained his education at the Plattville normal school [Grant Co., WI]. His first educational work was done as principal of the Dundas public schools [Rice Co., MN]. He then came to Redwood Falls and occupied the position of principal of the public schools four years, leaving here in the summer of 1886. he went to Waseca where he held a similar position for nine years and thence to Red Wing where he has been the past six years. He leaves a widow and four sons the eldest 16 and the youngest 2. While here he married Miss Minnie Ayer, a teacher in the schools here. Mr. Hubbard was well and favorably known. He was a candidate for state superintendent last winter and was otherwise prominent in educational circles. From a Walworth Co., Wisconsin paper (exact paper not known, it's from a clipping): Many Walworth county people will regret to hear of the death of Frank V. Hubbard, which occurred at Red Wing, Minnesota a few days since. Mr. Hubbard was formerly a resident of LaGrange and Spring Prairie. He had lived at Red Wing many years, and at the time of his death was city superintendent of schools. His death was due to a blow he received in the back of the neck from thelever of a road scraper which he was operating. The Republican of Red Wing in speaking of Mr. Hubbard's death says: "Rev. Moore, the officiating clergyman, paid a wam and well-deserved tribute to Prof. Hubbard when he said, "Death has invaded the home and has brought sorrow not only there but to the whole city. His life has been an honorable and noble one; his love and affection for his family has been a strong one; and his interest in his calling, never lacking." Mr. Hubbard's old schoolmates of the State Normal at Whitewater and his many Walworth county friends will extend their heartfeld sympathy to the bereaved wife and the fatherless children. Tribute published by the Red Wing Board of Education: Whereas, It has pleased our Heavenly Father in his wise providence to take from among us Prof. F.V. Hubbard, the honored superintendent of our public schools, a a time which to our human understanding seems so untimely and under circumstances so tragic, be it Resolved, by the board of education of the city of Red Wing, That we sincerely lament and deeply delplore his sudden death; That we found in Supt. Hubbard many noble qualities and traits of character to admire; That he was eminently fitted for the responsible position he held; That he was imbued with a high sense of honor, and a spirit of impartiality and justice in all his dealings, and always duly respected the opinions of others; That in administering the affairs of our schools, he was broad in his views and always ready to take counsel from his assistants and subordianates. That in dealing with the pupils he treated all, both rich and poor, with the same consideration and kindness; That by his death the board of education has lost a wise and eminently helpful adviser, our public schools a successful, painstaking and consciencious superintendent, our children a loving friend and faithful counsellor, our city a true and loyal citizen and the state one of its foremost educators; Resolved further, That in this their hour of sorrow and affliction, we extend to the bereaved family our heartfeld sympathy, assuring them that we have an interest in their welfare and that we individually extend to them a willing heart and helping hand whenever opportunities to do so may arise; and Resolved, That these resolutions be entered on the records of the board, a copy sent to the family of the deceased, and that they be published in the city papers.19,5,20 |

| Biography | Thousand Years of Hubbard History, Edward Day, 1895 (original paragrahing [or lack thereof] have been retained!): George Hubbard was born in 1601, and probably in eastern or southeastern England, where those bearing the name were located in great numbers. Nothing in the form of records has yet been found determining his birthplace or time of arrival in America. His name first appears in 1639 in a list of the early settlers of Hartford. These settlers came overland from the vicinity of Boston during the years 1635 and 1636, and located the towns of Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield, Ct., also Springfield, Mass. GEORGE HUBBARD was one of the number. He was given six acres of land "by courtesy of the town, with privilege of Wood & keeping cows on the common," and resided on a lot adjacent to the land of James Ensign and George Graves on a road that ran parallel with the Connecticut River, according to an early map, now extant. This road ran from South Meadow to George Steel's land, and then turned and ran across the "ox pasture" towards Wethersfiled, passing near to the Great Swamp. In 1640 he married Elizabeth Watts, daughter of Richard* [* for text of footnote, see Richard Watts entry] and Elizabeth Watts, and was then assigned a "home-lot" and land upon the east side of the "Great River." The colonial records show that "William Swanyne and George Hubbard were appointed Sep 4, 1640, appraisers of the estate of Edward Mason," and April 24, 1649, Geore Hubberd was "fined £10 for exchanging a gunn with an Indian." He appears to have disposed of his land and removed with about fifteen other families in March, 1650-51 to Mattabesett, so called until 1653, when it bacame Middletown. It swelled rapidly in size from accretions from Wethersfiled, Ct., and Rowley, Chelmsford, and Woburn, Mass., requiring afterward a division into sections knowsn as, respectively, Middletown, East Middletown or Chatham - now Portland, North Middletown or Upper Houses - now Cromwell, and later, Middlefield and Westfield. About 1650, or when he left Hartford, he carried with him a commission from the Colonial Government as "Indian Agent and Trader for the Mattabessett District." In 1654 he wasmade freeman, and settled with is son-in-law, Thomas Wetmore, upon opposite corners on the east side of Main Street. He owned large land tracts ont he west side and on the east side of the river. These lands were recorded Sep 5, 1654. He, Thomas Wetmore and two other land owners on the west side of the street, gave land for the second meeting-house. Steps were taken for erecting the first meeting-house Feb 10, 1652. Mr. Samuel Stow of Cambridge College, England, for several years temporarily had charge of this congregation. The records read: "It was agreed at a meeting of John Halls hous to build a meeting hous and to make it 20 fot square & 10 fot between sill and plat, the heygt of it." This structure was a one-story log house with a palisade around it, and GEORGE HUBBARD, living adjacent, was naturally selected as its keeper. Dec 17, 1666, he was allowed "40 shillings for sweeping the meeting-house and kepping the glass [hour glass]. This also included the services of his eldest son, Joseph, who beat the drum to assemble the congretation and to give warning of the approach of Indians. Ten men organized this church formally in 1668 and signed its covenant, the first minister, Nathaniel Collins, one of the first graduates of Harvard, heading the list of signatures. Much of the "confession of fairth" is still the creed of the church, which eventually came to be known as the Old North Church. The donated land abutted "against the corners of George Hubbard & Thomas Wetmer on the east sie - Thomas Wetmer half a rod at ye north corner; George Hubbard half a rod wide, three rods in length, against ye body of ye meeting-house and from thence out into an angle thre or four rods further," making in all thirty-two feet square. In case the meeting-house was reoved the land was to "return to ye proprietors again." This site was exactly in the middle of the highway, near or between what are now known as Liberty and Grand streets. Most of these dovenanters lcoated near this meeting-house, at the northern end of Main street, where is now St. John's Square, though three resided at "Upper Houses." An appraisement of his property March 22, 1670, showed him to be worth £90.10s.15d., and in 1673 £ 132.10s. At his death his inventory showed him worth £243.10s., and possessed of a dwelling-house and home lot worth £50, "2 1-3 acres of long meadow" worth £18.10s., 3 "acres of meadow (at (?) Pessenchaug) on the east side the Great River" worth £9, a tract at Long Hill of 226 acres, another "parcell west from the towne" of 300 acres, one "parcell on the east side of the Great River" of 464 acres, and the "one-halfe Lott" of 30 acres , a total of over one thousand acres. His original will in on file in the Hall of Records at Hartford, Ct., in a box labelled "Wills-H, 1647-1750," and bears date of May 22, 1681. In this document he states that he is "eighty years in age, yet in comfortable health of body & haveing the use of my understanding," etc. In his inventory, taken May 13, 1685, it is stated that he "deceased the 18 of March 1684." Sergt. Samuel Warde, John Hall, senior, and Ebenezer Hubbard were the witnesses. His widow died in 1702. One record of him says that he was "highly respected, and of marked integrity and fairness." He appears at this distance of time to have been devout, industrious, and possessed of those sturdy, wholesome qualities of mind and body without which the composition of our coutnry today would not possess that element of robustness and stability that has enabled it to so successfully withstand foreign infections, manners, and monarchisms. This New England fibre in the govermental-politico texture is now, sad to note, becoming gradually obliterated by unAmerican innovations and practices. He must have been a man of "marked integrity and fairness" to have been selected byt the colony as its Indian Trader. Much judgment has to be used by this representative of the colony in these dealings. Promiscuous trading by any one was forbidden, as fire-arms and fire-water were frequently bartered by indiscreet persons, which produced direful results. This resulted in the selection of one man to do the trading for all. On his judgment and prudence much depended. He must have erred, however, at one time, for the Colonial Court fined him £10 for exchanging a gun with an Indian. In a spirit of charity, his descendants are privileged to conjecture that he might have regarded the gun as an old and harmless one and incapable of going off and hurting anyone.1 | |
| Biography* | Not personally seen, but quoted from "A Catalogue of the Names of the first Puritan Settlers of the Colony of Connecticut": Hubbard, George, in 1665, certified before William Leete, at Guilford, the consideration paid Lowheag, by the inhabitants of Wethersfield, for six miles in breadth on both sides of the river, and six deep from the river west, and three deep from the river east, in Wethersfield. He was on the committee of the General Court in March, '37, with Talcott, Mason, and others. While he remained in the colony he was an important man at the General Court, and upon committees appointed by the Court. He was one of the first settlers fo the colony -- was appointed with two others, in '56, to survey the town of Wethersfield--was a committee to the General Court in '37 and '38, and a deputy in '39 in April, August and September, and was one of the leading men in the colony. He resided at Wethersfield, but remained in the colony but a few years before he removed to Milford, the to Guilford, and afterwards to Middletown, where he died in 1684, aged about 80. Children, Joseph, Daniel, Nathaniel, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mary Ranny, and Richard. (His wife, Elizabeth.) Joseph, of Middletown, died in '86--his children were Joseph, 15 years old, Robert 13, George 11, John 8, and Elizabeth 3. | |

| Burial* | c 1684 | Riverside Cemetery, Middletown, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, USA, Thousand Years of Hubbard History: GEORGE HUBBARD and his widow were buried in the Middletown Riverside Cemetery (near the original log church), laid out in 1650, and lying triangularly on the west bank of the Connecticut River, close to the Union Depot, and within a stone's throw of where he resided. This cemetery was laid out shortly after the year 1750 [probably 1650], and was the only buring-ground until 1713, the inhabitants upon both sides of the river using it. In it are several tombstones bearing the years upon them of 1600. These are mostly of blue slate, upon which the lettering better retains its contour than upon the brown sandstone, though the slate sometimes flakes off and is thus lost.... ...Tradition locates GEORGE HUBBARD'S grave close to the burying-ground entrance, fronting west, on St. John's Square, but no headstones show where he or his widow's dust is mouldering.8,3 |

His death certificate also indicates that the heart problems which led to his death (at age 63) had existed for 25 years... with arteriosclerosis, gradual coronary occlusion, and death finally caused by myocaridal damage with aneurysm failure. The death certificate also reports that he did not serve in the armed forces. His brother, Will A. Hubbard was the "informant" on the death. It's interesting that he did not provide (or it was not recorded, if he did) his brother's complete birth date (only the year) or address (only the street).

| Biography | Old Times in Windham by Rev. Henry Hedges Prout Originally published in the Windham Journal from February 18, 1869 to March 31, 1870. Article 4 (extracts from follow) published on March 11, 1869. Extracted from the microfilm copies of the Windham Journal located at the Vedder Research Library. Retyped by Arlene Goodwin. Downloaded from the Internet December 2002 at www.rootsweb.com\~nygreen2\ Jedediah Hubbard's tomb-stone in the old grave yard has inscribed on it, "The first Deacon and the first Settler in Windham." Probably he was Deacon at the founding of the Society in 1803, but as no date of his settlement here is mentioned, it is not so evident that the tradition is correct, that makes him the first settler. It is an authentic tradition among the descendents of Elisha Strong, senior, that this family were much rejoiced at the coming of Mr. Hubbard into the country, because they would thus have another neighbor near them. It would follow that Mr. Strong was here first, and his arrival was about 1786. The several sons of Jedediah Hubbard, Timothy, Jedediah, Chauncey, Amos and Samuel, young married men, came with their father and settled around him. The old man's residence, built by himself , is still standing across the creek from the saw-mill, on the farm owned by Darius Prout. This house is probably one of the very oldest in this part of the country. Respecting Mr. Hubbard's residence in this house, a rather curious incident or two may be related. The land on which it stands was claimed as covered by two patents, that of Livingston and that of Hardenburgh. It would appear that Hubbard's title obtained of Livingston, was held by the agent of Hardenburgh to be invalid, and he consequently proposed to take formal possession of the house in Hardenburgh's name. It his anxiety, Mr. Hubbard applied to one Simmons, who then lived in the house built by him, but afterwards sold to John Prout, Senior. Simmons told him to go directly home, and put over the fire all the kettles he had or could get, and fill them with water, and heat it hot, and bar the door of the house, and if the agent come near enough, pour the scalding water on him. Whether in the face of such a plan of defense, the agent and his men made their proposed attack, the story does not say-but it is certain that Mr. Hubbard was left in peaceful possession until the day when, at 82 years of age, he slept with his fathers. It is said that as a solution of the difficult question of title, the settlers sometimes got deeds from both Livingston and Hardenburgh agents for the same tract of land. There was a cheerful, gay tone about the early settlers, characteristic of pioneers generally. It is related, for example, that it was the custom of the Hubbard family, father and sons, to keep their holidays by playing the game of ball. What a picture does it present of the simple, old fashioned joyousness! The Patriarch, (Deacon afterwards) with his married sons, all boys again together; and full of innocent glee, like children, engaged in a joyous laughing struggle who should win. In the lack of what is more serious the following incident may be mentioned. It will at least help to illustrate the manners and ways of the Old Times. The Simmons before mentioned was present, it would appear, in the kitchen of the house built and occupied by Jedediah Hubbard, when a dance, then a very common way of spending an evening, was going on. It was probably before the organization of the Presbyterian Society in 1803-indeed much earlier-for there was present in the room adjoining the kitchen a gentleman who in the early years occasionally preached here-the Rev. Mr. Townsend. Very naturally, as music and dancing went on, the good man's excitement increased, till rising in his indignation, and opening the door, he thrust his head among the gay crowd, exclaiming, "fire! fire! fire!" this was met by Simmons in mad-cap hilarity, shouting, "water! water! water!" and the musical uproar ceased not. It is to be regretted that the authentic facts relative to the early history of so large a family are so few. Only one descendent of Jedediah Hubbard, Mrs. Snow, a great-grandchild, is living in this part of the country. His son, Deacon Timothy Hubbard, held a prominent place in the Presbyterian Society for many years. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Jedediah Hubbard have followed the drift of emigration and must be sought in the far West. 2 | |
| Biography | Centennial Of The Old First Congregational Church, Windham, New York 1803 - 1903 June 16th, 1903 - "A record of the First Congregational Church formed in Windham, County of Greene, State of New York, March 21st, 1803, by Beriah Hotchkin, pastor of the church in Greenfield, and Samuel Fuller, pastor of the church in Rensselaerville." (extracts follow) "The persons whose names are hereunto annexed, were agreed in a publicly professed to believe the following Articles of Faith, and entered into the Covenant affixed to the same." The Articles of Faith are 14 in number and will be found in the appendix. The Covenant, too, will be found in the appendix. These Articles and this Covenant were solemnly adopted and assented to by 28 persons— 11 men and 17 women— who have the honor, the distinguished honor, of being its Original Members. Their names are as follows: Elisha Strong, Samuel Ives, Jedediah Hubbard, Timothy Hubbard, Amos Hubbard, Jared Rice, Ichabod Brown, Elijah Strong, Samuel Crocker, Increase Claflin, George Stimson, Lydia Baldwin, Lois Lockwood, Lowly Ives, Martha Hubbard, Dolly Hubbard, Dolly Hubbard, Jr., Abigail Snow, Hannah Morison, Abigail Stimson, Sabara Hubbard, Esther Rice, Betsey Crocker, Rebekah Tuttle, Anna Buel, Sarah Rice, Sarah Claflin, Experience Stone. They chose George Stimson, son of Capt. George, Clerk of the Church. Jedediah Hubbard appears a little later, to be called "deacon." If he had been chosen here the record was not made. Timothy, his son, also appears as deacon, later. ================ But to return to the story of our own church. It grew slowly, at first. About 1807, there was a great revival . Those were trying times in those early days, says Col. Robertson. But Mrs. Theophilus Peck, Mrs. Lockwood, and Mrs. Brockett, who lived on the Heights, agreed to meet at a certain log in the woods between their homes, to pray for revival of religion, which they did from week to week and month to month, till a revival commenced, and a large number of heads of families and many others were converted and unite with the church. About the same time the Methodist itinerant preachers began to make occasional visits to this region. Dolly Hubbard joined them, and when called to account for forsaking her own church, sent Mr. Stimson a defiant letter, for which she was disciplined. ================ Up to this time the society that built the meeting-house seems to have had not legal organization, and if they kept any records, none remain. For nearly ten years they had gone on so, but Oct. 10th, 1808, a meeting for incorporation was held at the meeting-house in Batavia, of which Perez Steele was Chairman, and Noah Pond, Clerk. They proceeded to organize under the State law of March 27th, 1801, and took the name of First Society of the Town of Windham." And chose Noah Pond, Philetus Reynolds, Nathan Osborn, Timothy Hubbard, Elijah Strong and Jairous Munson, Trustees. The certificate of incorporation, duly attested, was laid before Munson Buel, one the lay judges of the County Court. It was approved by him and is recorded in the Greene County Clerk’s Office. Oct. 24th, 1809, Vol. 1, page 21,22. Sept. 28th, 1808, the society voted Rev. Mr. Stimson a settlement of $150, on condition that "if he left without the consent of the society, he should pay it back." This money was paid to Mr. Stimson the next June. In October, 1809, the society adopted what is called the "permanent" subscription plan, in which each subscriber bound himself to pay the sum opposite his name, every year in future, unless he moved away or joined some other church. More than 50 signed this and it is still in existence, with it autograph signatures. They also voted to fence the church-yard. In 1811 a committee was appointed to "promote singing." Was it a singing school? ================ Baptisms - 1st Congregational Church in Windham: Timothy Hubbard Laure, Nov. 29th, 1789 Lusina, Nov. 11th, 1792 Alphred, June 26th, 1796 Weltha, May 7th, 1799 Halsey, Sept. 6th, 1802 Laure bapt. | Biography* | From John E. Hubbard's research notes on Jedediah Hubbard: In 1800 Jedediah Hubbard then living in CT purchased land in Greene County, NY. His family, including his sons, Timothy, Jedediah Jr., Samuel, Chauncey, and Amos removed to Greene Co. Jedediah deeded much of this land to his sons. Twenty years before 1803 these valleys and mountain sides were covered with a primreview forest, chiefly hemlock. They had no settlers, and were visited only by forest rangers, roving idiots, tory refugees, and occasional land prospectors. It was not till after the Revolutionary War that it was safe to settle so far back from the Hudson River. Peace came in 1783. By 1785 it was safe to begin settlements.4 | |

| Death* | 8 Dec 1822 | Windham, Greene Co., New York, USA, Hard to tell who the dates apply to in the following quote: Men of Green Co. in the American Revolution: Capt. Samuel Hubbard, Ashland Son of Jedediah Hubbard, who died in Ashland, Dec 8, 1822, aged 82y. Came from Haddam, Conn. (Information supplied by a descendent). However, Jedediah's son, Samuel, wasn't born until 1776, so couldn't logically have been a soldier in the revolution. Old Times in Windham (Henry Hedges Prout) indicates that Jedediah died at age 82.... which would place his year of death at about 1823. "... it is certain that Mr. Hubbard was left in peaceful possession until the day when, at 82 years of age, he slept with his fathers."20,21 |
| Burial | Ashland Cemetery, Windham, Greene Co., New York, USA, Jedediah Hubbard's tomb-stone in the old grave yard has inscribed on it, "The first Deacon and the first Settler in Windham." 2003: What is visible from photo is: "In Memory of Jedediah Hubbard who died Dec 8. 1822; AE 82 y. The first settler..."(rest is below sod level).2,21 |

| Biography | Julius A. Hubbard, son of Alfred and Anna (Steele) Hubbard, came from Livingston Co., N. Y., in 1845, with his brother, Edward, who settled oil a farm in Troy. The father and sons, Ogden and Henry A., came later and settled in Spring Prairie. Julius A. married Joanna Elizabeth, a daughter of Nathan Adams, Sr., and settled in LaGrange. They lived for years on one of the farms owned by her father [actually, her grand Uncles] (the Witt. Branford place). As administers of the Adams estate they sold this farm to Gaylord Willsey (Joanna's brother], Feb. 5, 1856. After the death of her mother they moved to her home-the W 1/2 of NW 1/4 of See. 24-and purchased the farm. From this place their four children attended the Hill school and at this farm the post office was kept in the late fifties. The LaGrange Center people then had to take their turn in going three miles for their mail. In the late sixties this couple separated, the mother taking her daughters, Minnie and Alice, and younger son, Willie, to Michigan, leaving Frank with his father. Julius Hubbard married (2) Miss Emma Banker. In 1876 he sold his farm to Robt. Cross having moved the previous year, on account of his father's death, to the latter's home in Spring Prairie which he purchased. His wife died at this place. He sold the farm and went to Michigan making his home with his daughters summers and spending his winters with his relatives in Wisconsin. He married again in Michigan but when he died his remains were brought back and placed beside those of his second wife in Hickory Grove Cemetery. Spring Prairie. He liked fun and preferred file company of young people. 9 | |
