Obituary, Big Stone Co. Journal, Friday, 23 July 1909, page 5:

Ole T. Hegge succumbed to a lingering illness of more than a years duration, at the home of his son T. N. Hegge, in Big Stone Township, Friday, July 16th. Ole Thompson Hegge was born in Norway, January 23rd, 1832, and came to America to Vernon County, Wisconsin, while a young man, and was married June 1st, 1864. Mr. and Mrs. Hegge came to Minnesota to live in 1885. Eleven children were born to them, seven of whom are living. Mr. Hegge served in the Civil War and there lost his sight and has been totally blind for 30 years. Mrs. Hegge died in 1890. The funeral services were held in the M.E. church of this city, Sunday afternoon, under the auspices of the local G.A.R. Post. Rev. S.S. Farley preached the funeral sermon. A son from Two Harbors, Minn., and a daughter from Red Wing, Minn., came to attend the funeral. The interment was made in Mound Cemetary.

O.T. Hegge, a veteran of the civil war, died at his home in the town of Big Stone on Friday last in his 73d year. Aberdeen - Virgel H. Hegge, 86, of Aberdeen, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital after suffering a massive heart attack at home. Funeral services will be 3 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church, 502 South Lincoln St., Aberdeen with Rev. Eldon Reich officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Military Graveside Rites being conducted by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 of Aberdeen. Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m., Wednesday, and 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., Thursday, at Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen and one hour prior to the service at the church. Virgel H. Hegge was born Aug. 31, 1918, at Pretty Rock, N.D. to Elmer and Alma (Ostrum) Hegge. He attended school in North Dakota. During WWII he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Medical Non-Commissioned Officer at the rank of Sergeant in the Pacific Theater and was stationed in the Philippines. He received the following military decorations and citations: The Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Bronze Arrowhead Good Conduct Medal and a Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 21, 1945. He then moved to Aberdeen to join his two brothers, Leo and Vernon on New Year's Eve of 1945. Virgel married Marianna Wellman on July 3, 1950, at the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. He worked as a cabinet maker with Dakota Sash and Door for 35 years. He also built and operated an apartment complex at 113 South Lloyd Street for 38 years. Virgel continued to make Aberdeen his home until the time of his death. He was a faithful attendee and member of First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen and was also a member of the VFW. Virgel was an avid gardener and sportsman and enjoyed his annual hunting trips with his family and many friends. Survivors include one son, Martin D. (Genola) Hegge of Sioux Falls; one granddaughter, Sonja (Gary) King of Omaha, Neb.; one daughter, Carmen (Earl) Hegge-Kleiser of Greenwich, Conn.; one brother, Dr. Donald (Brita) Hegge of Squim, Wash.; two sisters, Eilene (Lloyd) Almos of Moses Lake, Wash. and Myrtle Rieker of Seattle, Wash. and three sisters-in-laws, Joyce Hegge and Esther Patterson, both of Aberdeen and Sharon Hegge of Seattle, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marianna, who passed away on April 27, 2004, three brothers and four sisters. Casketbearers will be Virgel's nephews, LaVern Hegge, Jerry Hegge, Duane Hegge, Allan Wellman, Tom Howell and James O. Olson.⁴

From Joyce Ryll to Sally Severson: They immigrated to America from Aardal, Norway, in 1846. Christen and sons, Tom and Hoover, are thought to be about the first to arrive of those who were to be members of the Kickapoo Church, est. 1853. They came to the Kickapoo area with the Fortney's around 1853. To the Hooverson home, came the Edre Hestitune family, illustrating the bounteous hospitality of the immigrant cabin dweller. In December 1854, Tom Hestitune was born. He and the Hooverson baby girl, Dena, were carried to West Prairie for Christening.¹

Hooverson Cemetery, Crawford Co., Wisconsin, Karsten Ohnstad: Our relative Dr. James Leary of Soldiers Grove took me out to a farm cemetery several years ago near Soldiers Grove, and we found the gravestones of Kristin and Anna Seim Hooverson. I believe that the Hooversons were known as Nundahl when they came to American in 1846. They came from a town in Norway on the Sognafjord called Aardal, a mountain town which today contains Norways largest aluminum factory.^1,7

Obituary: Elias Thoren was called to the Great Beyond, Nov. 12, at 1:10 a.m. after a lingering illness. The cause of his death was the infirmities of old age.

Deceased was born in Sweden on Feb. 19, 1844. In 1868 he immigrated to the United States and in 1881 he was united in marriage to Miss Mathilda Peterson at Stillwater. To this union were born eight children, four of whom preceded their father to the grave.

Mr. Thoren was a kind husband and father, and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He was a resident of Grass Lake township for 33 years, coming here in 1888 and settling on a farm in that township.

Those who are left to mourn his loss are Mathilda Thoren, Mrs. George Graves, Mrs. Wm. Ecklund, Aaron Thoren, all of this county, and Miss Ida Thoren of Chicago. Also a brother, Solomon Thoren of Chicago.

Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church of Brunswick Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Oscar Ebb officiating, and the remains laid to rest in the Swedish Lutheran cemetery at that place.

The out of town relatives who attended the funeral were: Ida and Solomon Thoren of Chicago, Wendell Thoren of Minneapolis and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Swanson and Mrs. Peterson from Amery, Wis.^4,2
