| Biography | | Fredrik Wilhelm Nord was born July 4, 1865, in Grasmark, Varmland, Sweden. His parents were Nils Rothman Nord, son of Olaf and Maria Nilsson and Maria Kajsa Nilsson, daughter of Jan and Karin Nilsson.
Fred was one of eleven children. His siblings were, Maria, Kristina, Johannes, Nils Magnus,Charlotta,Klara Emilia, Sofia, Emil, August and Johanna.
In 1859 their name was changed to Nord from , first Nils Nilsson, to Nils Roth,man Persson to Nils Rothman Nord.. He was a military man, and went for a time under the name of Fray. The custom was that military men could choose a name in the military. Fred would tell how he hated shining his fathers boots and shining the buttons.
In Sweden Fred was employed as a lumberman assistant, buying timberland and logs from farmers. He learned to speak Lapland and Norwegian languages. He was at one time a chauffeur for a Mr. Rothman.
Fred migrated to America at the age of twenty- three, in the year of 1888. His journey took him to Trondheim, Norway, then to Hull and Liverpool, England. By boat to America, then by train to Quebec, Canada, then on to his destination, Stillwater, Minnesota, where his sister, Sophie, lived.
He applied for his naturalization papers four months after his arrival.
Fred met Mary Thorene of Stillwater, herself at age seven, an 1885 Swedish immigrant. They were married in Stillwater, Minnesota, September 2, 1899 by rev. Phillip Thelander before four witnesses. They were Mary's brother Hugo Thorene, and her friend Dena Carlson and Jenny Nord, Fred's sister and his friend, Gustav Nelson. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Foss gave the reception at the Odd Fellow Hall in Stillwater. It can be noted that the first appear |
