Fredrik Wilhelm Nord was born July 4, 1865, in Grasmark, Varmland, Sweden. His parents were Nils Rothman Nord, son of Olaf and Maria Nilsson and Maria Kajsa Nilsson, daughter of Jan and Karin Nilsson.

Fred was one of eleven children. His siblings were, Maria, Kristina, Johannes, Nils Magnus,Charlotta,Klara Emilia, Sofia, Emil, August and Johanna.

In 1859 their name was changed to Nord from , first Nils Nilsson, to Nils Roth,man Persson to Nils Rothman Nord.. He was a military man, and went for a time under the name of Fray. The custom was that military men could choose a name in the military. Fred would tell how he hated shining his fathers boots and shining the buttons.

In Sweden Fred was employed as a lumberman assistant, buying timberland and logs from farmers. He learned to speak Lapland and Norwegian languages. He was at one time a chauffeur for a Mr. Rothman.

Fred migrated to America at the age of twenty- three, in the year of 1888. His journey took him to Trondheim, Norway, then to Hull and Liverpool, England. By boat to America, then by train to Quebec, Canada, then on to his destination, Stillwater, Minnesota, where his sister, Sophie, lived.

He applied for his naturalization papers four months after his arrival.

Fred met Mary Thorene of Stillwater, herself at age seven, an 1885 Swedish immigrant. They were married in Stillwater, Minnesota, September 2, 1899 by rev. Phillip Thelander before four witnesses. They were Mary's brother Hugo Thorene, and her friend Dena Carlson and Jenny Nord, Fred's sister and his friend, Gustav Nelson. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Foss gave the reception at the Odd Fellow Hall in Stillwater. It can be noted that the first appearance of Jello in Stillwater. was beautifully served at the reception.

The couple moved to Willow River, Minnesota, where Fred worked in the lumber mills. Their first child, Vendla, was born in July of 1900. The baby died at three months of age. The following year, June 29, 1901, a son, Hugo William, was born.

Fred and Mary and son returned to Stillwater. During their time there Louella Sophia, Vendla Christine, Marie Evelyn, and Marcus Wilbert were born. While here Fred bought into a butcher shop with is brother-in-law, Mary's brother, Joel Thorene. This venture was not successful so Fred sold his share.

Fred and Joel then went into the painting and paper hanging business. When this did not prove profitable, Fred went to work in the mills again. He was transferred to a sawmill in Park Falls, Wisconsin, where he worked as an edgeman. Through an accident he tore a muscle in his left arm, which ended his working in the mills. Their son Alton was born here.

Fred decided to go farming, something he knew nothing about. Upon seeing the land and the Willow River, the area reminding him of his native Sweden, he decided to settle there. He made arrangements with his friend Pete Foss, and purchased the farm, the former Greene Paradise Mill property. He told Mary that the house there was big, old and cold. The neighbors, upon hearing that they were moving, had quilting bees and made five quilts for a going away present. All of them were stolen in the shipment to Hudson. A great loss, as they were much needed. They arrived at their new home on October 11, 1911.

Alton Norman, the baby , was one year old , when they, with his brothers and sisters came to Hudson. Pearl Louise, Eugene Frederick, Lloyd Wilson and Elva Ione were born at Hudson. When Fred was asked how many children he had, he would say "Five and a half dozen."

Fred and Mary and the family lived and farmed this land until all of the children were reared and gone. Fred died August 22, 1958. Mary died March 17, 1960.

Fred always kept the land open and free. Never posting it. He said he felt that God let him use the land to raise his family. In keeping with that, daughter Marie, who purchased the Farm, at her mother's request, in turn sold it to the State of Wisconsin for Park land. This way it remains free for all to enjoy. The eco- systems remain unchanged ensuring that all of nature and wildlife will remain undisturbed. Friends and family can enjoy the land as they always had. A fitting end, a fulfillment of Fred Nord's philosophy.

Marie Rude, 93, of Hudson, died early Friday morning, June 23, at the Greeley Healthcare Center in Stillwater where she had resided since February.
She was born Aug. 30, 1906, in Stillwater, the daughter of Fred W. and Mary (Thorene) Nord and came to Hudson with her parents in 1911 and bought property on the Willow River.

The original Nord farm was on the Willow River race, at the site of Paradise Mill that had been founded in 1853-54 by Charles Cox and Caleb Greene.

She went to Northline country school in the town of Hudson through the eighth grade and then attended Hudson High School. After the first year in high school, she quit and went to work.

Her first job, at the age of 14, was at Hochstein's neighborhood grocery store at 1010 St. Croix Street, that was owned by Fredricka Hochstein. Marie waited on customers who included nearby residents, farmers and railroad shop workers who would stop for an ice cream cone, a penny stick of licorice, or maybe a five cent bag of Bull-Durham tobacco.

Later she worked at the upstairs telephone office on Second Street where Anna Christoph was chief operator. She also worked three years for Max Wiener at his Hudson men's store.

After a series of sales jobs in Hudson and the Twin Cities, she became co-owner of the Colony Dress Shop in South Minneapolis, that attracted a clientele from a wide metropolitan area because of its stylish, unique and quality merchandise. She remained in the business for many years and retired in the 1950s.

On Dec. 20, 1930, in Minneapolis, she was married to Anton O. (Tony) Rude.

In 1959, she and her husband purchased the Nord family home place on the Willow River, a famous trout stream frequented by many fly-casting champions and lovers of the pristine environment.

Marie and her husband continued the tradition of her father, Fred Nord, in keeping the property open to fishermen and nature lovers. Fred Nord felt he was only a steward to the river and property and it should be open to the public. It was providence, the Nord family contends, that Marie Rude would continue the philosophy of her father regarding the open land policy. It was her decision that the land be transferred to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to become a part of the Willow River State Park system. This act assured it would forever be free for the public's use and enjoyment.

Survivors are two brothers, Marcus Nord and Lloyd (Edith) Nord, both of Hudson; two sisters, Pearl Anderson and Elva (Gordon) Dahlby, both of Hudson. Preceding her in death were her husband, Anton Rude, in 1969; three brothers, Hugo, Alton and Eugene Nord, and three sisters, Luella Abrahamson, Vendla Cronk and an infant sister.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Monday, June 26 at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, June 25, at the funeral home and one hour before the service.

Burial was in Willow River Cemetery in Hudson where Rodney and Dallas Nord, Joseph D. Halverson, Ronald Willie, Dennis Lein and Darryl Dahlby were casketbearers.

This is one of the three windows which are memorials to a sister and two
brothers of the Ogden family, friends of the Clarkson family. It should be
noted that Mrs. Mahlon Ogden of Chicago gave considerable money in the
1880's to the Child's Home and Hospital, the fore- runner of Clarkson
Hospital which was located adjacent to Trinity Cathedral.

This is the second Ogden window. William B. Ogden was the first president of
the Union Pacific Railroad during its organizational period. A bill was
passed by congress on July 1, 1862, creating the Union Pacific Railroad
Company. William Ogden of Chicago, was one of the men appointed on the
corporate body for its formation. At its first meeting, held in Chicago in
September 1862, Ogden was elected president. At the final organization
meeting, held a year later in New York, John A. Dix was elected president
and William Ogden remained on the board.

Death of Mahlon D. Ogden at His Residence in Elmhurst -
A Sketch of His Career in this City from the Early Days.
Mahlon D. Ogden, one of the early settlers of Chicago, died at 12:30 o'clock on yesterday, at his country residence in Elmhurst. Although Mr. Ogden was well advanced in life, the announcement of his serious and probably fatal illness on yesterday morning created surprise. He had been in unusually good health for the past few years, and, in fact, was robust physically. He was troubled seriously with a chronic complaint about four years ago, but was afterward wholly cured. He attended to his business in the city on Tuesday as usual, and went home at night in his usual health. At midnight he was attacked with severe pains in the chest and was pronounced dangerously ill with pneumonia, by a physician who was immediately summoned. The best physicians of the city were unable to prevent the culmination of the disease in death, although a telegram to his son, who was, east to come, was countermanded on Thursday by reason of apparently favorable symptoms.

Mr. Ogden came to Chicago, in the summer of 1836, a poor man. He afterward counted his wealth by the hundreds of thousands of dollars, but died as poor as when he came to this city. Very soon after his arrival he formed a partnership in law with Hon. Isaac N. Arnold. In 1841 he was chosen judge of probate and held that position for one term of four years, still retaining his law practice, however, with Mr. Arnold. He left the partnership in 1847 to become a member of the firm of Ogden & Jones, the representatives, at that time, of the American Land Company and of other very large real estate interests. This firm afterward became known as Ogden & Sheldon, and he was still a member of it at the time of his death. He was twice elected alderman.

Mr. Arnold says of the deceased that he did not have much to do with their court practice during their partnership, his taste running in the direction of office work, hence he devoted himself mainly to matters pertaining to real estate and disputed titles. He did not make much money until he went into the real estate business proper, when he became wealthy at a rapid rate. His property was principally in real estate, but he undertook speculation in Pennsylvania mines and lost. His real estate depreciated in value, and gradually it slipped from his possession, the well-known property on Clark Street being the last. He had the forethought, however, to secure his wife a comfortable, though unpretentious, house at Elmhurst, and this is all that remains to the family.

Soon after his arrival in Chicago, Mr. Ogden married Miss Kasson, of Columbus, O., and, because houses were scarce in those days, he lived for two or three years in officers' quarters in old Fort Dearborn. He then moved to a house at the corner of Dearborn and Ontario Streets, in which he lived until one of the then finest residences in Chicago was built by him on the block between North Clark and Dearborn Streets and north of Lafayette Place. The grounds comprised the entire block. The house was erected in 1859, and was the only building which was not swept away, within the devastated district of the North side, by the great fire of '71. It lately passed into the hands of the Union Club, and is now occupied by it. After the death of his first wife, Mr. Ogden married a daughter of Gen. Sheldon, of Delaware County, New York, who survives him. His children are the wife of Gen. William E. Strong, Charles C. Ogden, of Little Rock, and three unmarried children.

Mr. Ogden was born in Delaware County, New York, in 1811. He studied law in the office of Judge Swayne, now of the United States Supreme Court, and was admitted to the bar just before coming to Chicago. He was a faithful attendant at the services of St. James' Episcopal Church during his entire residence in this city, but did not become a member until about three years ago. Bishop Clarkson was present and officiated at his confirmation by reason of the personal friendship between the two. He is pronounced by those who knew him best to have been a man of perfect integrity and truthfulness, and with a character above reproach. He was respected by all and had many warm friends. He was the brother-in-law of the Hon. J.Y. Scammon as well as of Mr. Edwin H. Sheldon, of the firm of Ogden & Sheldon.

The funeral will occur on Monday, but the arrangements for it are still incomplete.

College Avenue, was united in marriage to Dr. Jens Ohnstad of Minneapolis, MN. The church was tastefully decorated with foliage and the center aisle was carpeted in white, on which were scattered autumn leaves whose bronze, crimson and gold tints lent charm to the scene. Four young ladies graciously ushered the guests to their seats: Misses Clara Allen, Lydia Littethun, Mabel Hanson and Helen Diers. At 7:40 to the strains of Lohengrin's wedding march, played by Bernard Boxrud, the ushers lead the way up the leaf-strewn aisle and were followed by bridesmaids, Henrietta Boxrud, Agnes Nash of Hopkins, MN., Rachel Ohnstad of Minneapolis, Amalie Erickson of Mabel, MN., Ellen Mikkelson of Ferryville, Wi, and Marie Hooverson, sister of the bride. Next after the bridesmaids came the matron of honor, Mrs. J. A. Stub, sister of the bride. Didrikke Stub, niece of the bride and Nora Strom acting as flower bearers, preceded the bride who was escorted to the alter by her uncle J. C. Hooverson. The groom, attended by his best man, Josias Ohnstad, met the bride at the altar and they took their places at the center with the best man on the groom's right and matron of honor at the left. The six bridesmaids, three of whom stood on either side, completed the group. A hymn was sung by the assembled guests, and after speaking briefly, Rev. H. G. Stub, D.D., of St. Paul, pronounced the marriage vows to which the bride and groom responded. After the benediction and singing of a hymn, Bernard Boxrud played Mendelson's wedding march, and the procession now headed by the newly married pair, moved down the aisle and out of the church, where carriages were in waiting. A reception was given at home which some seventy-five guests were present. A three course supper was happily served by four young ladies -- Misses Alma and Selma Lane, Nellie Allen and Agnes Simmons. The decorations at the house were pink and white. The bride wore French lawn trimmed with Valenciennes lace. Her only ornament was a brooch, which her grandmother had worn at her own wedding. Funeral services to be held for Dr. Jens Ohnstad on Sunday afternoon

In the death of Dr. L. (sic) Ohnstad citizens of McIntosh and community feel the loss of a personal friend and helper. Forty years of faithful service came to the end with his passing on Tuesday evening. Night or day, year in and year out he was always ready to give his help without question, placing the interest of his neighbors before those of his own.

Through long years as a professional man and as a member of the community he has always striven to do his best. Quietly and without ostentation, he has been the embodiment of the belief "That it is better to give than to receive."

In 1903, shortly after receiving his medical degree from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Ohnstad began his practice of medicine and surgery in this community. From that time until this, with the exception of three years during which he carried on his work in Minneapolis and Belgrade, he continued his practice here.

To have a hospital, and better serve his fellow man, had always been his dream. In 1918, with the construction of City Hospital, his ambition was realized. It is impossible to estimate the value which the realization of that dream has meant to all.

Jens L. Ohnstad, son of Carrie Jerdee and Lars Rognald Ohnstad, was born in Dane County, Wisconsin on June 20, 1868. He spent his youth at the farm home of his parents, and in early manhood attended the normal school at St. Angsar Iowa. He graduated from there in 1892, and taught school in South Dakota and in Fillmore County, Minnesota. His ambition was to take up the study of medicine and in 1899, he entered the state University. His interest in his profession was never purely personal, his goal was service to humanity and he felt it his obligation to keep abreast of all the latest developments in the ever expanding field of medicine and surgery.

He took graduate work at the Poly-Clinic in Chicago and at the University of Minnesota. Each year he traveled far to attend state and national medical conventions.

In 1908, he was united in marriage to Miss Mabel Hooverson at Red Wing, Minnesota. Two children were born to them, Peter Rolf and Karsten Jerdee. Mrs. Ohnstad died in 1918.

On November 28, 1923, Dr. Ohnstad and Gunda Egeland Jensen were married at Bemidji, Minnesota. Since that time they have made their home in the residence quarters of the City Hospital.

In spite of failing health during the last year, Dr. Ohnstad continued to give medical assistance to his patients. Though forced to rest most of the time, he went into his office each day to give personal service to those who needed help. "I don't want anyone but you, Dr. Ohnstad." said one the of three patients who came to the hospital on Monday, the day before the doctor's death.

Monday evening, Dr. Ohnstad suffered a stroke, he rallied some what and was conscious Tuesday until two hours before his death at five minutes to twelve.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 from his home and two o'clock from Our Saviour's Church. Rev. Westermoe will conduct the services and interment will be made in the St. Luke's Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Ohnstad home.

Dr. Ohnstad is survived by his widow, his two sons, Peter Rolf and Karsten Jerdee and one granddaughter, Leah Marie. Karsten, being in Minneapolis, was able to reach his father's bedside shortly before his death. Peter Rolf, who is stationed at the air base at Lincoln, Nebraska is driving here from that city and will arrive here on Thursday night.²

Karsten Ohnstad published a book about the challenges of being blind called "The World at my Fingertips" in 1942. He lost his vision at the age of 16 - apparently the result of complications resulting from combined injuries: a scissor injury to one eye when he was 5 and a soccer injury he suffered later as a sophomore in High School.⁴

Suffering, someone once said, will either make one bitter or better. Karsten Ohnstad wouldn't know about bitterness; the word can't be found in his dictionary. In its place, long ago, he scribble a better word, "challenge."

Then he scribbled some more and produced the best-selling autobiography of the frustrations, the struggles, the dreams, and the victories of a young many who lost his sight at 17. His is the story of a man of gentle wit whose intelligence and pride wouldn't let him settle for the restricted life usually alotted to the blind.

Ohnstad, who resided in South Minneapolis, has earned two masters degrees, taught in three colleges, lectured around the United States, and with his wife Gertrude, operated his own insurance agency for 19 years.

His book, The World at My Fingertips, published by Bobbs-Merrill in 1942 when Ohnstad was 29, was condensed by Readers Digest and translated into a dozen foreign languages. Parts of the book appear in anthologies studied by high school students today.

Karsten Ohnstad's narrative is an account of his attempts, right from the onset of his blindness, to recapture his skills and retain his independence.

As a youth, Ohnstad had a natural talent for drawing and cartooning, "but it was developing beyond that," he said. "Those days they used to tell me, 'If you keep that up you'll wind up in an attic.' They didn't have anybody teaching art then. And of course I lost my vision which cut that out.

"As a freshman in high school," he recalled, "I was drawing all the time and flunked two of my four courses. The next year I was on the honor roll.

"Anybody who writes or draws," he said, "has these images in his mind. Through writing I still have a way of getting these images out.

"Writing the book was a lifesave for me," said Ohnstad, who spent six months in Miller Hospital in St. Paul while doctors battled to save his sight after a soccer injury as a high school sophomore. The soccer mishap aggravated an old wound to his left eye which was pierced by a scissors when he was five. The soccer incident caused an inflamation known as sympathetic ophthalmia in which an injured eye can infect a good eye.

Ohnstad spent the next three years finishing high school at the Faribault School for the Blind and learning a trade, piano tuning, which would later help pay his college tuition.

In 1933 he entered St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. He considered going into teaching, the ministry, or jounalism. "I figured I had three choices," he said. "I could try one and if it failed I could try another and if it failed I would still have one to fall back on."

But when he graduated from St. Olaf in 1937 with the depression in full swing he couldn't find a job.

So Ohnstad revisited the School for the Blind, this time to work in it's fast-growing library which was just beginning to distribute the then-new "talking books" for the blind.

In 1942 he enrolled at the University of Iowa where an innovative program allowed graduate students to ear a masters degree through creative writing. "I earned my masters degree in English with 'The World at My Fingertips'; as my thesis," he said. "It was published that spring and condensed that fall in the September Readers Digest."

"The Readers Digest paid me $1,500 which was the most they'd ever paid for condensing a book up to that time," Ohnstad said. "But a number of years ago when 'Advise and Consent' came out they paid $40,000. I was born before my time."

"As a result of my book being published I was given a contract by a lecture bureau - W. Colston Leigh, Inc. - that's the largest lecture bureau in New York. I traveled alone, this was before I was married, around a great part of the United States appearing mostly on the Artists Series programs in colleges and universities and before civic groups of all kinds."

Ohnstad was listed in "Who's Who on the Lecture Platform in America".

He met Gertrude Holstad at a party given in his honor after his book was dramatized on radio's Blue Network. The two were married in 1943. She learned the Braille alphabet and thereafter when Ohnstad traveled around the country they corresponded in Braille, "So nobody could read it," Gertrude said.

Ohnstad took time out in 1943 and went to Washington D.C. for training in industrial placement. "I wanted to work for the blinded veterans of World War II who would be in need of rehabilitation and jobs. I got a job as a placement officer for the employable blind in Kansas.

"Part of my training was learning to operate all types of factory machinery - drill press, punch press, milling machines, and turning lathes - so that when I want out to private industry I could go in there knowing something about what they produced. I represented my product - blinded vets. I knew that by just walking up to the plant and leaving it by myself I would be answering one of the employers questions, "can a blind man get to and from the plant himself?'"

About 15 to 20 per cent of all blind persons are employable on the same basis as anyone, Ohnstad explained. "My job was to find the right worker for the right job and place them on jobs in industry of all kinds."

Then the Veteran's Administration put him in charge of the five state are here called "Branch 8." "They had me in an old horse barn out there at Fort Snelling - an old cavalry stable. I supervised the placement of vets in Minnesota, the Dakotas, Iowa, and Nebraska."

At the time the program was fading out in 1947, Ohstad had 65 per cent of all his blinded veterans employed - the highest placement average in the nation.

"The fact that I had written a book and been on the lecture platform for two years helped me get into college teaching," Ohnstad said. He taught speech for three years and was chairman of the speech department at Ripon (Wisc.) College earning, during summer breaks, a masters degree in speech from Northwestern University.

In 1951, Ohnstad and his wife, who has a degree in business administration, opened their own insurance agency in Minneapolis. (The two granted themselves a leave of absence in 1957 when he was given a scholarship to the University of Oslo by the Sons of Norway.) In 1970 they sold the business and he took a temporary opening in the speech department as Normandale Community College.

Next Ohnstad taught speech for 5 years at LaGrange, a Southern Baptist college in Hannibal, Missouri.

Ohnstad said that his blindness was no handicap whatever in the classroom. His techniques were not much different from any other professor. He would often begin class with a lecture referring to Braille notes. Mrs. Ohnstad recorded all his textbooks on tap and though Ohnstad judged his students' speeches in class she recorded these, too, for later confirmation.

"I had my class cards in Braille," he said, "that I flipped through for a complete record of each student.

"I never had any trouble with deportment; 99% of the students were very good."

Now Ohnstad wants to try to get into freelance writing. "That's what I'm doing now. I like it, but I've got a lot to learn, particularly in the field of marketing.

"I feel that the best thing for me to do in terms of research is to go back into my own experience again. They're nostalgic pieces - light humor. The locale is the town I was raised in, Macintosh, Minnesota.

"My mother was killed in a car accident when I was five. Shortly thereafter my dad (a physician-surgeon), my brother and I moved into this combination house and hospital which my father built. We lived in part of the hospital. I was raised in a hospital."

Ohnstad writes now about that period of his life and describes the pieces as first person, narrative, adventure type.

"I'm interested primarily now," he said, "in my own experiences, but I'm not confined to them. I''m looking around to write on other subjects, too. I'm considering the possibility of fiction."

The most rewarding things he's done have been his book and marrying Gertrude (not necessarily in that order) Ohnstad said. "She's a very big help to me in my writing. She says she can't construct materials but she's a very good critic."

"I write in Braille," he explained, "then I type it out on a regular typewriter. Then I show Gertie my pieces and she reads them to me and puts them on tape. If I feel something needs revision I copy it down in Braille from the tape and revise it. Then I will type out the final version. I'm not the kind who can dash something off and have it perfect the first time.

"The pieces I've written compare most closely to what James Herriot has done in 'All Things Bright and Beautiful' and in his other books. The approach is very similar."

Ohnstad's own favorite writers include Herriott, Paul Engle and Phyllis Whitney.

At 66, Karsten Ohnstad is not retired by a long shot. "I regard this as commencement," he said. "Why should I retire now when I'm at the peak of my background and experience? I should make use of that through my writing. I have an obligation to do that."

My wife Gertrude and I were pleased to hear from you, and I am happy to add one more relative to my family tree, especially one on the Hooverson side. I have very little information about the Hooverson background as my mother died in a car accident when I was five. My mother's mother, Bertha Reese Hooverson was the wife of Peter Hooverson who was a brother of Hoover Hooverson. Hoover Hooverson was your grandfather, wasn't he? We found his grave in a country cemetery near Soldiers Grove. The church close by the cemetery was torn down in recent years. My grandfather Peter Hooverson died in 1882 in his brother Hoover's farm home. Both brothers were in the Civil War, Peter serving for five years after enlisting at age fifteen. After the war he operated a lumber business in Soldiers Grove with an Atley Peterson.

Hoover and Peter Hooverson's parents were Kristin and Anna Seim Hooverson. Our relative Dr. James Leary of Soldiers Grove took me out to a farm cemetery several years ago near Soldiers Grove, and we found the gravestones of Kristin and Anna Seim Hooverson. I believe that the Hooversons were known as Nundahl when they came to American in 1846. They came from a town in Norway on the Sognafjord called Aardal, a mountain town which today contains Norways largest aluminum factory.

I should mention that my mother's name was Mabel, and she was a sister of Aleda Hooverson Stub. The two girls and an adopted cousin Marie were raised in Soldiers Grove. Their mother moved with them to Red Wing, Minnesota back around 1895 or so, and the girls attended a ladies' seminary there, a Lutheran seminary which burned down long ago.

That is about all I know of the Hooverson tree. If you can add something to it, I would appreciate your dropping me a note about it.

Lengby the town in which your daughter lives is only sixteen miles east of McIntosh, Minnesota, the town in which I grew up. My father, Dr. J.L. Ohnstad, a physician and surgeon, had several patients living there.

As for my eye situation, I have regained considerable vision as a result of my corneal transplant last October. I see very little compared to what you can see, but I get around entirely by vision, and, with the help of a magnifying glass, I can read print down to the size of ordinary typing. The doctor expects further improvement in my sight, but I am doubtful. Eight of the stitches from my cornea were removed last month and the remaining eight stitches will be removed next Monday.

We enjoyed visiting with your sister Alletta and her husband James about two years ago, and I greatly appreciated the picture of my grandfather Peter Hooverson which she sent to me. I am also writing a letter to Alletta, and will enclose a copy of this letter for her.

My book The World At My Finger Tips is no longer in print. Perhaps your Rockford Library could borrow a copy of it from the Chicago Library. It was published by Bobbs-Merrill Publishing Co. in 1942 and a condensed version of it was contained in the September 1942 issue of The Reader's Digest and in all its foreign-language editions.

Family Group Sheets Ramsjö:

Johannes Liljendah's father, Olaf Torstenson, was a Norwegian. He didn't marry Johannes maother. He married instead Jan Jonsson and got another 5 children. Nils Jansson Liljendahl was one of them. He took, like Johannes did, the name Liljendahl and left for Amerika in 1879.

Curt Persson research:

Johannes moved often during his time in Grasmark (up to 20 years old). He registers then as a farm worker. He moved for example with his family in 1856 from Nas (where he was born) to Sandviken and in 1858 to Grasmarksgard. All small farms! Then he moved alone in 1866 to North Hojden and further to Uddheden in 1868 and then back home to his family again in 1869 just before a new move in 1870 to Lysvksgard. Then back home to Grasmarksgard, Grasmark again in 1874. He moved via Ljusdal up to Ramsjo-Sund 1875. At that time he reported as a roadworker.

Took the name Liljendahl around 1870-74. Liljendahl means "flower valley"³

He may have been travelling with one or two other Swedes, who were listed adjacent to him in the exit list: Johan Østerland (age 60, unmarried worker, bound for Brainerd) and Tekla N'slund (age 36, married, worker) headed for Marinette, Wisc.^8,3,9

Belgian? - They had come to Sweden to work in the Nobel factories, partly for economic reasons but mostly because they were protestants living in a Catholic country and subject therefore to certain disadvantage.

Although the birth/baptismal records in Visnums-kil give the date of birth as 21 December 1823 and 22 December 1823, respectively... on the birth date it appears that the "1" is crossed off of the 21 and the number "3" is written in very lightly. The household register for the family during the same and subsequent years gives Johanna's birth date as 23 December 1824.^4,1,5,2

A picture shows her to be, even in old age, a slender, attractive, almost swarthy old lady.⁴
