| Name Variation | Petersson | |
| Name Variation | Olaf Anton, The preferred spelling of Olaf vs. Olof is difficult to discern in the records, which are usually hand-written. When Olof Anton signed his citizenship papers, the 2nd "o" in Olof appears similar to the" o" in "Anton" and the "o" in "Peterson"... so that may be the way he actually spelled it himself. His death certificate and the church records in St. Paul (both handwritten and not completely unambiguous) appear to spell it "Olaf." | |
| Name Variation | Johansson, In the Göteborg parish records, Olof is indexed under Petersson, but a notation is made about his alternate surname, "Johansson".5 | |
| Birth | 1832 | Uddevalla, Sweden, This 1832 birthdate is quite different from the 1841 reported on his death certificate and from that inferred by the reported age at death in his obituary.3 |

The funeral of Mrs. Martha Ames, mother of Mayor Ames, was held at her late residence on Clifton avenue yesterday afternoon. The services, conducted by Rev. Marion Shutter of the Church of the Redeemer, were simple in nautre and consisted of reading of passages of scripture, remarks in memory of Mrs. Ames and paryer. A quartet, consisting of Miss Mabel Runge, Miss Mynn Stoddard, D. Alvin Davis and J. Chick, sang "Jesus Lover of My Sol," "Abide With Me," and "One Sweetly Solemn Thought." A broken column of flowers, a large wreath and a great bunch of lillies were on the coffin. The pallbearers were Lieutenant b.W. Bacon, Sergeant Fred Shepard and Captain Getchell of the police force; E.E. Wheelock, from headquarters; T.R. Brown from the mayor's office, and Al Thompson, a friend of the family. The offices at the city hall were closed during the afternoon. St. Paul Dispatch April 20, 1901 Mrs. Ames' Death Mother of Mayor Ames - Connected With Early History of Minneapolis Mrs. Martha Ames, widow of the late Dr. Alfred E. Ames, died at her residence, 3104 Clinton avenue, this morning at 8:30. Mrs. Ames was 82 years of age last January, and her death resulted from complications attending her old age and incident to neuralgia of the heart. Of the members of her family of seven sons 4 survive. The oldest, Ezra B., living at Osceola, Wis., will arrive today. Curtiss B., of Rockford, Minn., is in poor health, and will not come to Minneapolis. The others, Adelbert A. mayor of Minnesapolis, and Frederick W. , superintendent of police. Mrs. Ames was closely connected with the early history of Minneapolis. She had lived in the state longer than any other white woman above Fort Snelling. Minneapolis Tribune Sunday, April 21 1902 Mrs. Martha A. Ames Passes Away After A Long Illness Martha A. Ames, widow of Dr. Alfred E. Ames, one of the original settlers of Minneapolis, died at her residence, 3104 Clinton avenue, yesterday morning after a long illness, growing out of a complication of troubles arising from old age. The direct cause of death was neuralgia of the heart. The funeral will be a private one, from the residence at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. Mrs. Ames was a home woman who disliked show, and at her request the funeral will be a modest one. Rev. Dr. Shutter will preside, and the Gethsamane choir will furnish the music, Mrs. Ames having been a member of that church. Dr. Shutter being one of the old residents and a close family friend, accounts for his selection as presiding minister. Mrs. Ames was the mother of seven sons, of whom four survive her. They are Ezra B. Ames, living at Osceola, Wis; Curtis B. Ames, Rockford, Minn.; Albert A. Ames, now mayor of Minneapolis, and Fred W. Ames, superintendent of police. Three sons have died, Charles Ames, who died at the age of seven years; Martin, who died in infancy; James A. who died in Fergus Falls, the result of wounds and privation in the army. Mrs. Ames gave four of her sons for the glory of her country, all of them being in the army at one time. Martha A. Ames was the oldest white woman in Minnesota in her residence in the state at the time of her death. She was a pioneer resident, having come to what in now Minneapolis in 1851 with her husband from Rosco, ill. They were married at Ashtabula, Ohio, her maiden name being Pratt, of the Connecticut family of that name, her birthplace being Meriden. Her husband died in 1874, after having paassed an eventful life in the city. It was in October of 1851 that Dr. Ames made a claim covering the site of the old court house, 80 acres of which he entered at the land office, the other 80 being entered by his consent by D.M. Coolbaugh. The couple first moved into a small house at Ninth avenue and Fifth street sout, but a few years later he erected what was then the finest house in town, which now stands on the opposite corner to the old court house, which the occupied in 1857. Dr. Ames was the first practicing physician on the west side of the river. He used his land liberally for the benefit of the community, prsenting the city with two lots for a court hourse site, and tow for the First Presbyterian church, of which he was te first elder. Dr. Ames was one of the first representatives the territory sent from this locality, was one of the chief delegates to the constitutional convention and held the position of postmaster for some time. During all this active life Mrs. Ames shared in his triumphs, and was one of the leading women of the day. She survived to die at the ripe old age of 83 years.5,6,7 |
