Biography* Daughter of a merchant in Skien.

Larsen, P.L. : It was said of her that she was so pious that in her the promise of mercy to a thousand generations was fulfilled, and blessing came to the family. In a book which her husband has written about her he says that shortly before her death she cried out that she had a view into heaven and saw God the Father and Jesus, and she begged those around her that they must not regard this as fantasy. She sang hymns right up to the time of her death.

Mrs. Bertha Hooverson Dies. Word has been received by friends here of the death of Mrs. Bertha Hooverson, a former resident of this city, which occurred at her home, 2705 Dupont avenue, south, Minneapolis, at noon Wednesday. She was 78 years of age. The Hooverson Family made their home here for many years, but of recent years have resided in Minneapolis. Mrs. Hooverson is survived by one daughter, Marie, who made her home with her. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock at Central Lutheran church, Minneapolis. 1920 US Census in McIntosh, MN. Census records for Bertha and for her brother, Torber N.J. Reese both say indicate that both their mother and their father were born in Norway.

In the 1900 census, Bertha is listed on the same page as Torber. Her occupation is listed as "Land Lady." In her household (both 1900 and 1920) is also Marie H. Hooverson, born August 1890 in Minnesota. In the 1900 US census in Redwing, MN Marie is listed as an adopted daughter... although in the 1920 census she is listed as a daughter. Marie was listed as teaching in the Public schools in 1920.

Bertha Hooverson's death certificate lists her address (for the last 8 years) as 2705 Dupont Ave S., Minneapolis, MN - which is also the address of the informant, Marie Hooverson.

===

The widows' pension act was made effective on 27 June 1890. Bertha made a pension application as a widow to Peder C. Hooverson on 25 August 1890. Her daughters were 9 and 11 at the time, and her husband had died 8 years earlier. She was living in Soldiers Grove, Crawford Co., WI at the time she made her application.

Note* In 1870 there is an Elizabeth Richmond (Richwood?), age 30, living in household of Marinda and Simeon Rider. She is listed as "in family." Based on her age and place of birth (IL) my assumption is that she is the same Elizabeth who was the (apparent) daughter of Marinda and Simeon in the 1850 census. She is also living with Marinda Ryder in 1880. However, where you would expect "daughter" to be written in, it is left blank. There is also a boy, "David Smith - age 8" with relationship not specified in 1880. In 1910 an Elizabeth is enumerated as Elizabeth Smith, sister of Mary J. Ryder. My theory, from all of this, is that Elizabeth is the daughter of Simeon and Marinda Ryder. That she was twice married (Richmond and Smith) and has no children, but may have a stepson or adopted son, David.

For the past six years she has been in poor health, and since last Christmas there was a marked failure in her condition and she gradually grew weaker until her death.

Mrs. Smith's maiden name was Elizabeth Ryder. She was the eighth child in a family of ten children, all of whom have preceded her in death except one sister. After Mr. Richmond's death, She moved to Lodi where she lived until her marriage to Ira Smith on Dec 15, 1885, ater which her home was again in West Point. Mr. Smith's death occured on the 15th November 1899, and about one year later she moved to Lodi where she resided until her decease.

A number of years ago she united with the Lodi Baptish churcah and continued a faithful servant of the same until her Master called her.

She is survived by one sister, Miss Jane Ryder, Lodi; two step-children, Mrs. Isabelle Loper of West Point and Eli Smith of this village, and one adopted son, David Smith of Tomah, Wis.

The funeral services were held at the Baptis church on Thursday afternoon. Rev. G. R. Carver officiated. The singers were: Bert, Richmond J., Jo Bowman, and Mrs. H.B. Wells.
