Didrikka Aall Ottesen was born March 1, 1907 in Rio, WI, where her father, Rev. Otto C. Ottesen, then served as pastor of the Rio and Bonnet Prairie churches. When she was three years old a move was made to the Paciific Coast, where her father, who was then broken in health, remained for four years, when a move was made east again and a call extended to him from his former congregations in Iowa, the Little Sioux Valley and Rembrandt churches. Here she spent several years of a happy childhood until her father passed away, when she was nine years old. She frequented the high school in Rio, spent one year at Albert lead Academy and one year at the high school at Storm Lake Iowa. ... She moved with her mother to St. Paul, where sh was preparing to graduate from High School when illness overtook her. ...

My mother - Diderikke - I cannot remember. I am told she was a tall and queenly woman. combined with her woman's love of home and dear ones was a keen interest in life in general. She was well educated, loved books and music, but also the out-of-doors. One of her friends, who knew her well, has told me that she was an excellent driver and utterly fearless. In corroboration hereof she showed me a newspaper clipping which tells of her stopping a runaway team, and preventing what would probably have been a serious accident. She did not live to see her two little boys grow beyond babyhood. Blessed be her memory!

According to P. Lauritz Larsen, Didrikke died after a brief illness while visiting her parents in Koshkonong.

Miss Hanna Ottesen, a daughter of the pioneer pastor, J. A. Ottesen, has died in Decorah Hospital, where she was taken the previous day, probably struck down by a heart attack. She was a little more than 70 years old.

Hannah Cathinka Ottesen was born 17 September, 1860, at Koshkonong in Dane County, Wisc., where her father was the pastor for a number of years. She grew up in the now historical parish house, where intellectuals from both sides of the ocean met during the years when most of the land got cleared and built on, and where she obtained more than a thorough education from her parents and tutors. She later worked as a teacher of various subjects, however, it was always as a tutor for a family.

In 1891, with her parents who then were already old and in poor health, she came to Decorah, where they bought a house on Mechanic Street to spend their last days peacefully. And their daughter Hanna cared for them lovingly until they closed their eyes in death. Her mother, born Cathinka Tank Doderlein, died as early as 1899. Her father died rive years later.

Since that time, Hanna Ottesen lived alone. She did not want to be placed in a home for the aged nor did she want to have someone staying with her.

On Tuesday before noon, some of the neighbors had noticed that Miss Ottesen did not go in and out as usual. Miss Flora Bergesen, who lives right across the street, also felt alarmed at noon because it was so quiet there. She got her next door neighbor, Miss Nora Wohlford, to go with her. They found the door open to the first floor, and when they entered they could hear a weak groaning upstairs. There they found Miss Ottesen completely helpless in bed. She seemed to have lost the use of her senses, but it was as if she could hear that some one was near her and she made an effort to talk. She was fully dressed and apparently when she got sick, she had gone to bed and pulled the cover over her. The doctor got called immediately, and after a short examination took her to the hospital, where her very weak throbbing life faded away the following morning.

Hannah was the last child born to Pastor and Mrs. J. A. Ottesen. An older daughter, married to Dr. H. G. Stub, Minneapolis, died as a young wife and mother and was survived by her fine husband and two sons, the now well known pastors, J. A. 0. Stub and H. A. Stub. A son, Pastor 0. C. Ottesen, died several years ago survived by his wife and children.

The funeral takes place Saturday afternoon at two o'clock from First Lutheran Church here in Decorah with the burial next to her parents in the Lutheran cemetery here.

Jacob Aal Ottesen and controversy…

Among all the many lawsuits heard on Koshkonong, most of which were concerned with church matters, none created a greater stir than the case naming Pastor Otteson as defendant in "State of Wisconsin vs. J.A. Otteson for assault and battery with intent to do great bodily harm." The lawyers who took the case were the later well-known senators William Vilas and John C. Spooner. According to a report appearing in Skandinaven the story runs as follows:

In Ottesen's congregation there was a man with a reputation for meaness and cantankerousness who apparently resented his mother -in-law more than anyone else in the world. Although he was a man of means himself, he took his mother-in-law one cold morning in winter and drove her 18 miles to a poor house where she shortly died. The incident aroused [everyone] and after many long discussions the man was dismissed from the Congregation.

Late one evening he came to the parsonage and requested an interview with the pastor. Ottesen was apprehensive and told the people in his house to remain in the next room. Sure enough the man, asked to see documentary evidence of his dismissal. Ottesen laid the papers on the table while holding his hand on one corner for security, but the man grabbed them and stuck them in his coat pocket. "It will not be right to take those papers," said Ottesen. "I'm not taking them. You gave them to me," he replied and walked around to Ottesen who had meanwhile got up from his chair. As the man hovered over him, Ottesen thought it was his opportunity to snatch the papers from the pocket, but this is just what the troublemaker wanted, for in the same moment he grabbed Ottesen's hand with both his own , threw himself over backward across the floor with Ottesen on top of him, yelling "Help! Murder!" At this instant the pastor's wife and people of the house ran in to find the man on his back with Ottesen on top.

The man now swore out a complaint and the sheriff came to arrest Ottesen during holy worship services. A long and costly Court case followed with the congregation paying for Ottesen's defense. At the trial nearly 50 witnesses testified that they would never believe the charges against the pastor and he was finally acquitted.

But the most important lawsuits were the series, mutually associated, which erupted over the doctrine of predestination in the church in the 1880s. Essentially, these cases hinged on the right of a congregation to fire its own pastor when the members felt it was for the good of the congregation. The majority of members in two congregations in Koshkonong and a minority in a third left the old Norwegian Synod and affiliated with the anti -Missourians who organized the United Lutheran Church Synod in 1890, while Pastor Ottesen and minority swore allegiance to the traditional confessions of the Norwegian Synod. In order to preserve peace in the congregations, Pastor Ottesen offered to resign but later withdrew this offer and refused to give up the parsonage when the new pastor arrived on the grounds that he had been installed for life and could not be forced to resign except for immoral conduct, false teachings or by mutual consent.

Ottesen and his party were successful in the lower courts but lost in appeals to the high court which upheld the right of the majority in a congregation to decide the ownership of property that the pastor had to resign whenever the congregation decided; and that decisions reached by a majority of members were binding on the entire congregation. The intent of the law and its interpretation in these several cases involving the Koshkonong congregations makes interesting reading which ought to be published in pamphlet form and distributed to help prevent judicial church strife in future.

In Norway and again in America, Lutheran ministers played vital roles in their communities. They tended not only to the spiritual needs of their congregations, but they also acted as educators, culture bearers, and models for behavior. Adolph Bredesen wrote of his frequent visits in the 1860's to the Spring Prairie (Columbia County) parsonage of Herman Amberg Preus and his wife Caroline: "There was much there which attracted me. The people were very friendly and kind. The conversation did not deal exclusively with wind and weather, crops and prices. There was all abundance of books, periodicals, and pictures." A visit to a minister's parlor could give the rural family unaccustomed to the "finer" things a glimpse of modest prosperity. When they could, the minister and his wife decorated their homes in the latest and most tasteful ways. Some of their parishioners were inspired to seek the same comforts for their homes.

Herman Amberg Preus was one of seven ministers who organized the Norwegian Synod in 1853, and by 1869 he was serving many communities near Spring Prairie, including Norway Grove where he met Andrew Dahl. Preus sent Dahl on various photographic missions over the years: synodical conventions, church gatherings, etc. He may have taken Dahl with him on his parish travels, introducing him to local residents who then posed for Dahl's camera. While Preus promoted Dahl's photography, he also undoubtedly encouraged the bright, personable, and devout young man to enter the ministry.

Pastor Jacob A. Ottesen came from several generations of Lutheran ministers in Norway and in 1853, like Preus, was a founder of the Norwegian Lutheran Synod in Wisconsin. In 1860, he was called to serve the churches of Christiana, Pleasant Springs, and Deerfield-the Koshkonong churches. From the beginning, his tenure there provoked controversy. His lineage, university education, and social standing distinguished him front most of' his flock, who came from peasant backgrounds, often had owned no land, chafed under foreign rule, and resented their subjugation to the educated class. He aligned himself with the Missouri Synod theologians who interpreted the Bible literally and found justification in certain of its passages for the institution of' slavery. Given their background, it is no wonder that Ottesen's congregation "virtually to a man" opposed slavery and had difficulty accepting his position.

In 1868, three Years after the Civil War ended, sixty families withdrew front Ottesen's congregation "forever."

In anticipation of the 1861 synod meeting in Uitca, Ottesen's congregation built the two-story parsonage seen here. Andrew Dahl often sought lodging there, staying for at least a week in 1874. Visible in this view are Jacob Magelssen, a medical doctor and son of a Lutheran minister in Rock county, Ottesen's son Otto, and Preus's son Christian Keyser. The latter two young men both went on to become prominent ministers in their own right.

In 1881, controversy again flared in Ottesen's church as well as throughout the entire synod. This time the issue was predestination, the question of' whether salvation belonged only to those "elected" by God or only to those who had faith. Ottesen and his congregation struggled over this issue for years until 1889 when the congregation notified him that his ministry was terminated and that he would have to vacate the parsonage. When Ottesen refused to give up his home of twenty-three years, legal action was brought against him. In 1891, the Supreme Court of Wisconsin ruled against Ottesen forcing him to turn the parsonage over to Pastor G. G. Krostu, his successor. Ottesen departed for Iowa and passed away in 1904.

The old pastor, Jacob Aal Ottesen, one of the pioneers and veterans of the Norwegian Synod, died about 12 o'clock Saturday night, and his death did not come unexpectedly, neither for himself nor for those nearest to him, as he had been in poor health for a long time.

Pastor Ottesen was born in the Fet Parsonage in Norway 11 June, 1825, and he therefore got to be 79 years and 5 months old. His father and grandfather had been ministers in Fet for about half a century. The family belongs to one of the oldest ones in the country, and there have been appro1ximately 50 ministers among Pastor Ottesen's kin.

Following his graduation with distinction from the university, Ottesen for three years was a teacher at Nissens Latin og Realskole (Nissen's Latin? and High School) in Kristiania. However, Norway was not where our Lord had decided for him to work, and since many of his compatriots had emigrated to America, he accepted in 1852 the call from a congregation, which had been formed in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. After his ordination by Bishop Arup, he left with his young wife, Katarine Doderlein, a daughter of School Principal Døderlein of Kristiania Katedralskole (Cathedral School) for the unknown America. Ole Bull had just started his disastrous colony, Oleana, in Pennsylvania, and Pastor Ottesen was requested to go and preach the gospel for his compatriots there. His parish in Manitowoc consisted of three organized congregations in and around the town as well as a mission field in the area from Green Bay to Milwaukee. This was truly mission and pioneer work that not only called for a sincere love for the Lord and His work, but also required much bodily strength and perseverance. Most of his time was spent traveling, especially on horseback in all kinds of weather and through thick forests without roads. Pastor Ottesen traveled that way, often 30 to 50 miles a day, and picked up a bad case of rheumatism, which resulted in permanent damage to one of his legs. In 1853 he was one of seven ministers who met in Koshkonong together with 42 representatives from 28 congregations to consider the question of establishing the Norwegian Synod. Its constitution was adopted here, and then later at the Synod Conference in October, 1853, got voted in after having been presented to the congregations.

Pastor Ottesen was the Synod Secretary for many years. The old pioneers had a keen eye for how to succeed with their work. They had to get their pastors educated in this country, and Pastors Ottesen and Brandt were sent in 1857 as delegates to visit the Lutheran schools in St. Louis, Columbus and Buffalo to see what could be done to get the Norwegian ministers educated at one of these schools. Based on the report that the two delegates brought to the Synod, the Seminary of the Germans in St. Louis was chosen, and a professorship was filled by theNorwegians, and a hand of friendship given tying the Norwegian Synod to the Missouri Synod. This has lasted until this day. In 1860 Pastor Ottesen was called to Koshkonong, where he served the three congregations: Eastern and Western Koshkonong as well as Liberty Prairie until 1891.

From 1861 to 68, he and Pastor H. A. Preus edited Kirkelig Maanedstidende (Monthly Periodical for the Church). In 1877 he was appointed Professor of Theology at Luther Seminary, which had just been established, but he declined the appointment. That same year, he was also selected as the first chairman for the Eastern District. The Synod was divided into districts that year. He also turned down this position. He was a member of the Synod's Church Council for many years.

During the tragic church controversy that broke out in the Synod during the 80's, Ottesen and his congregations suffered much, and in 1891 he stepped down as a minister and moved to Decorah, where he has since lived. Last year during the jubilee for the Synod here, as one of the few original ministers, he was present and spoke to the Synod. A short time before the Synod Conference, he and Pastor H. A. Stub received from King Oscar the Order of Knight of St. Olaf for long and honorable service to the church. Pastor Koren was made Commander of the Order of St. Olaf. Pastor Ottesen for more than a generation has carried the burden that goes with a large parish, although he was not strong physically, and this was in addition to all the work that the community had him do. However, he had a good education in the classics, sharp judgment, and was a competent writer, and more than anything else he had an intense love for his Lord and His work and was willing to offer everything for it. Although Pastor Ottesen's work has not attracted the attention of the big world, because it was done quietly among the members of his own congregation, he often did some really heroic deeds. He lived a life of self-denial at all times and that should be known in wide circles. We all owe an invaluable debt to men, who like Ottesen, just lived for one reason, namely to break bread for others and to take the gospel of Our Savior to as many as possible. Bless the memory of them!

Pastor Ottesen had a happy family life. Ottesen had a sharp and witty mind, and there are many who carry happy and amusing memories from the parsonage at Koshkonong. Pastor and Mrs. Ottesen had six children; three of them died quite young. A daughter, Diderikke, married to Professor Dr. H. G. Stub, left at her death two sons, who now are ministers. The two children who survive him are: his son, Pastor Otto Christian in Rio, Wisconsin, and his daughter Hanna Cathinka, who has stayed with him all the time here and who faithfully and lovingly has cared for him. An adopted son, Olaf Mandt, died young after serving as a minister in Baltimore for a short time.

From 1894 to 1896, Ottesen was the minister for the Synod congregation here in this town after Pastor Hove moved to Mankato and before Prof Stub became the minister here. He has otherwise, except for the last two years, preached off and on. His last task as a minister, as far as we remember, was the ordination of his daughter's son, Jacob Stub, to the holy work as a preacher in the fall of 1902. Ottesen has written and translated much. He wrote Kort Uddrag af Synodens Historie (A Short Excerpt of the Synod's History), which was presented at the World Exhibit in Chicago. At the request of the Synod, he rewrote the Catechism and translated Gynter's Symbolik from German.

Jacob Aall Otteson, who likewise was born and reared in Norway, where he received a liberal education and where he was ordained a minister of the Lutheran church. He taught for three years in the Latin schools of Christiania, and in 1852, came to the United States, locating in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where he was one of the pioneers in the mission work of his church, having charge of congregations in various places in that section of the state. Mortimer Smith (The Life of Ole Bull), page 104-105: In a few days he [Ole Bull] was off to New York, where the emigrant ship the Incognito had just arrived from Christiania. Persuaded by Bull's glowing eloquence, about one hundred of the immigrants from this ship set out for Oleana, their fares paid by the violinist.

Among the passengers on the Incognito was a Lutheran minister, Jacob Aall Ottesen, later to become well known as a pioneer religious worker in the Norwegian settlements of Wisconsin. He and his wife set out with Bull for Oleana, a trip he was later to describe in a long and interesting letter to a friend at home. "We were travelling," he wrote, "in the most expensive seats and there were I think six or seven carriages, that is to say about 500 persons all belonging to the better classes, among whom not one had heard of the famous artist. No, there is no art, poetry, or science here, here it's dollars and steam and that is all!" [translation of letter continues on describing the concept of the settlement Oleana].

Biography* Jack Stub: J.A.O. II (Jake Ottesen) was the family embarrassment. He was an electrician of sorts, but he never held a steady job and hobo-d from place to place. He probably was somewhat of a lush; he smelled of SenSen. He'd arrive with no warning, have a few meals, and leave. My mother couldn't stand him and the two older girls felt the same way. Jake was a pejorative term to DeDe and Bertha, and when Nancy and I called our boy "Jake," Dede was fit to be tied; but she finally adjusted.2
