He was wounded several times but finished the war and was mustered out in 1865 and was honorably discharged.^4,8,6

Description of injury: gun shot wound of right eye and face ball passing in from in front first beneath the margin of orbit - at infra orbital foramen fracturing superior maxillary and coming our in throat. There is a large dark colored cicatrix under eye. Completely deaf in right ear so much so that it makes him quite deaf. Loss of smell in right nostril and loss of sensation in right-side of face, with some facial paralysis and some impediment of speech. Complains of a great-deal of pain in right side of face and head.⁶

End of A Long Life

Wound Received in the Civil War induces Disease that Finally Ends Life - The Funeral Services

One by one the old soldiers are passing. The ranks of the boys in blue who in the dark days of the early sixties fought for their country are fast dwindling. The last one to answer the call from Redwood Falls was L.N. Rowe, who for the past quarter of a century has been a prominent resident of the county and city.

Mr. Rowe was called to his reward half an hour after noon last Friday. Mr. Rowe has been in feeble health for some time, yet the announcement of his death came as a surprise to his neighbors and friends. Six weeks or more ago he had an attack of pneumonia and at that time was seriously ill. He recovered from this and was gaining strength fairly well. On the day of his death he was up and about the house in the morning.

The funeral was helf from his late residence on Broadway at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Rev. G. W. Lutz, pastor of the Methodist church of which Mrs. Row is a member, officiating. John s. Marsh post, G.A.R., in which Mr. Rowe held active membership, attended in a body and took charge of the services at the Redwood Falls cemetery where the remains were interred. The pall bearers were chosen from the members of the post being J.W. Ferris, H.C. Baker, J.B. Robinson, C.H. Kenney and G.A. Buxton of this city and L.A. Colson of Beaver Falls. The Woman's Relief Corps also attended in a body. At the cemetery the regular burial service of the G.A. R. was read.

[funeral service details omitted]. In closing Mr. Lutz read Dr. J.W. Chadwick's poem "The golden robin's Nest" and made touching allusion to the fact that Mr. Rowe was a lover of birds, that he used to sit under the trees upon the lawn where the robins were his companions, and how during his illness he watched them from his window, and how much pleasure and comfort he too with them.

Lord Nelson Rowe was born in Vermont, Dec. 16, 1837. In 1941 his parents removed to Wisconsin. There he grew up on a farm and when the civil war broke out in 1861 he enlisted as a private in company E, Sixth Wisconsin Volunteers. He served for three years and was then honorably discharged. In the battle of South Mountain, Sept. 14 1862, Mr. Rowe was severely wounded in the face. He was in the hospital for some time or until his wound was thought to have healed when he reentered active service. He participated in the second battle of Bull Run. Not long after this his wound gave him further trouble and he was for a time incapacitated for duty. When he again recovered he was placed under Hancock and during the last year of his service was assigned to secret duty. The wound again gave trouble and Mr. Rowe was discharged from the service, the date of the discharge being July 19, 1864.

Returning to is home in Wisconsin after his discharge Mr. Rowe was married the following year to Mrs. Elizabeth Hubbard. Four children resulted from this union. Guy N. Rowe, now a resident of Minot, N.D., Mrs. Jessie Johnson of Clara City, Minn., Mrs. E.E. Harriott of Wabasso, and Mrs. Charles Buxton of Wenatchie, Wash. Mr. Rowe removed from Wisconsin to Redwood Falls about 25 years ago and has since resided here. He followed farming until within a few years ago when owing to his age and poor health he retired from active business. The wound received by Mr. Rowe in the war undoubtedly was the cause of his death, in that it brought on bronchial trouble.

Mr. Rowe was a well known and highly respected resident of the city and had a large acquaintance in this vicinity. He leaves a widow and the four children named above, all of whom were here to attend the funeral. F.V. Hubbard, a former principal of the Redwood Falls public schools who was accidentally killed at Red Wing some two years ago, was the son of Mrs. Rowe by her first husband.
