| Biography* | Daughter of a merchant in Skien. Larsen, P.L. : It was said of her that she was so pious that in her the promise of mercy to a thousand generations was fulfilled, and blessing came to the family. In a book which her husband has written about her he says that shortly before her death she cried out that she had a view into heaven and saw God the Father and Jesus, and she begged those around her that they must not regard this as fantasy. She sang hymns right up to the time of her death. | |

| Biography* | 19 Oct 1934 | Obituary, Minneapolis Tribune, 19 October 1934: Mrs. Bertha Hooverson. Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Hooverson, 78, who died at her home, 2705 Dupont avenue south, will be a 2 p.m. Friday at Central Luthran church. The Rev. J.A.O. Stub, pastor of Central Lutheran church and son-in-law of Mrs. Hooverson, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial park. Born at West Prairie, Wis., Mrs. Hooverson moved to Minneapolis two years ago. Surviving are a daughter, Marie; three brothers, John Reese of Seattle, Wash.; Chris of Dawney, Calif.; T.N.J. of McIntosh; three sisters, Mrs. Tollef Peterson of Billings, Mont., Mrs. I. G. Ascheim of Berthold, N.D., and Mrs. Ella Torger of Bainville, Mont., and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Death Notices (x2) in the 18 October and 19 October 1934 Red Wing Daily Republican: Mrs. Bertha Hooverson Dies. Word has been received by friends here of the death of Mrs. Bertha Hooverson, a former resident of this city, which occurred at her home, 2705 Dupont avenue, south, Minneapolis, at noon Wednesday. She was 78 years of age. The Hooverson Family made their home here for many years, but of recent years have resided in Minneapolis. Mrs. Hooverson is survived by one daughter, Marie, who made her home with her. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock at Central Lutheran church, Minneapolis. Burial will be in that city. Funeral Held Today. - The Republican was informed that the funeral of Mrs. Bertha Hooverson, a former resident of Red Wing, who died in Minneapolis Wednesday, would be held Saturday. This was an error as the services took place at the Central Lutheran church, Minneapolis, this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial was in that city. Among those in attendence were Misses Almira and Lydia Lillethun of this city. ============ 1920 US Census in McIntosh, MN. Census records for Bertha and for her brother, Torber N.J. Reese both say indicate that both their mother and their father were born in Norway. In the 1900 census, Bertha is listed on the same page as Torber. Her occupation is listed as "Land Lady." In her household (both 1900 and 1920) is also Marie H. Hooverson, born August 1890 in Minnesota. In the 1900 US census in Redwing, MN Marie is listed as an adopted daughter... although in the 1920 census she is listed as a daughter. Marie was listed as teaching in the Public schools in 1920. Bertha Hooverson's death certificate lists her address (for the last 8 years) as 2705 Dupont Ave S., Minneapolis, MN - which is also the address of the informant, Marie Hooverson. === The widows' pension act was made effective on 27 June 1890. Bertha made a pension application as a widow to Peder C. Hooverson on 25 August 1890. Her daughters were 9 and 11 at the time, and her husband had died 8 years earlier. She was living in Soldiers Grove, Crawford Co., WI at the time she made her application. |

| Note* | In 1870 there is an Elizabeth Richmond (Richwood?), age 30, living in household of Marinda and Simeon Rider. She is listed as "in family." Based on her age and place of birth (IL) my assumption is that she is the same Elizabeth who was the (apparent) daughter of Marinda and Simeon in the 1850 census. She is also living with Marinda Ryder in 1880. However, where you would expect "daughter" to be written in, it is left blank. There is also a boy, "David Smith - age 8" with relationship not specified in 1880. In 1910 an Elizabeth is enumerated as Elizabeth Smith, sister of Mary J. Ryder. My theory, from all of this, is that Elizabeth is the daughter of Simeon and Marinda Ryder. That she was twice married (Richmond and Smith) and has no children, but may have a stepson or adopted son, David. | |

| Biography* | From: Pages of Time - History of Petroleum Co., Montana DELANEY. Michael Robert Michael Delaney Sr.was born January 7,1893 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He mar-married Gunilda Riese on July 21. 1921. She was born on March 1. 1900, in West Prairie, Wisconsin. They moved to Petroleum. County in 1925 to live on the Minnesota Bench where they ran the Lutheran Church Ranch. Sometimes churches. were willed or given property. and occasionally they bought up more land. They hired managers who could operate the farm or ranch for them. Mike Delaney was one of these managers. He eventually bought the Lutheran Church Ranch: Mike and Gunilda had two sons — Douglas (1926). and Milton Richard (1927) — and one daughter, Mary Helen (1935). In 1925-26 Gunilda taught at the Neumann School. Later she was a teacher at the Three Buttes School. When the Delaney children were the only ones going to school. the ranch bunkhouse became the classroom. Dances were often held at the ranch for the neighbors. Mike Delaney died suddenly at the age of 67 in Lewistown, where he had retired in 1951. He served as a Petroleum County Commissioner for 12 years. beginning January 1, 1939. Milton "Vicki" and Doug bought the original ranch from their mother. Later they acquired the old Fergus County Sheep Ranch, buying out Toby & Machler's interest in 1946, and H. C. Belcher's share in 1955. The brothers then dissolved the partnership. with Doug having the home place and Dick taking over the old sheep company ranch.2 | |

| Death* | 3 Dec 2006 | Bellevue, King Co., Washington, Obituary from the Seattle Times, 21 Dec 2006: John Riese, who helped build successful law firm, dies at age 97 By Manuel Valdes Seattle Times Eastside bureau John N. Riese hated milking cows. Growing up in a farm in Duvall during the early 1900s, milking the family's cows was one of the many duties he and his eight siblings had to do every day. But his dislike of cows was the only thing Mr. Riese didn't like about life on the farm, his son recalled. Decades later, after a successful career in law, Mr. Riese frequently went back to Duvall to reunite with friends and reminisce about life in the country. He also helped establish the Washington State 4-H Foundation, and in 2001 he was inducted into that organization's Hall of Fame. "He was a farm boy at heart," said Rush Riese, Mr. Riese's son. "He had a very special place in his heart for Duvall." Mr. Riese, a successful Medina lawyer, died Dec. 3 of natural causes. He was 97. It was in rural Duvall, the place of his birth in 1909, where Mr. Riese found his love for the art of argument, which would lead to a career in the law. "His father would act like a justice of the peace out there," Rush Riese said. "They would hold these hearings. He'd put his ear to the door and tell his sisters he could make better arguments." Mr. Riese graduated from the University of Washington's School of Law in 1937. After graduation, he was a founding member of Emery, Howe, Davis and Riese, which became Davis Wright Tremaine, a multistate law firm employed by The Seattle Times. When World War II hit, Mr. Riese volunteered to serve his country, joining the Navy. One night, while stationed in San Diego, he met a young nurse named Rae at a club. "He walked in with a group of other guys," Rush Riese said. "She was sitting there with a group of her friends. I think it was love at first sight." The two married in 1943. After World War II, they moved to the Seattle area and later settled in a rambler in Medina that was suitable for their daughter, Jane, who was paralyzed from the waist down. "He was a great father," Rush Riese remembered. He was "kind and generous. He'd celebrate your successes, feel and hurt with you in your failures." Later, Mr. Riese met Jim Casey, the founder of United Parcel Service. Both men began a professional relationship. When Casey decided to establish a foundation to help children in foster care, he asked Mr. Riese to serve on the foundation's board. John "began to feel really strongly about the foundation," said Joan Poliak, vice chair of Casey Family Programs board of trustees. He developed an "understanding of what these children needed." Mr. Riese served on the board for 26 years and directed it for 22. "He was a man of great integrity, of principles and a good leader," Poliak said. "He had a great sense of humor and [was] absolutely devoted to children." Mr. Riese's death was preceded by his wife's in 1996 and daughter Jane's in 2004. In addition to his son, he is survived by his son's wife, Susan, of Redmond; two grandchildren, Katherine and Brett; his younger sister, Irene Skurski, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and many nephews, nieces, friends and colleagues. A memorial service was held Monday. Manuel Valdes: 206-464-8305 or mvaldes@seattletimes.com1 |
