| Biography* | Jack Stub: And then we have Ingolf Stub, the son of the syrupy Valborg. We got out of the Corps after Korea in February of 1952, and with no desire to brave Minnesota weather, we rented a house in Altadena, just North of the Pasadena line. And who should show up in midsummer but Uncle Ingolf. He'd been visiting a Cal Tech faculty member (at least, that's what he said), and after mentioning the names of a few other people, all of whom he said were important, he put out his cigar and left. He must have concluded that we had no loose cash, because when we got to know Uncle Hans and Auntie Vic, we learned that Ingolf was a promoter, had promoted them out of their savings in a grape growing scheme near Indio, and was shielded by the statute of limitations. Bill Murray, a good friend who had achieved some notoriety as the hanging judge of Orange County, always claimed he was a first class lawyer, and he proved it. He found a quirk in the California law about land deals: Ingolf was fair game. Auntie Vic was anxious to proceed, but Uncle Hans was squeamish about it, so the matter rested. But after he died, Auntie Vic wanted to nail Ingolf. With Murray's help, I drafted a letter to Ingolf. About a week later, a letter arrived from a third person, stating that Ingolf was ill and might not live. I then heard from Auntie Vic, who was really upset. Ingolf had called her, had said, who knows what, and she implored me to drop the subject. Some time afterwards, I received a letter from Ingolf, listing many important people he knew, including a half-witted congressman, James G. Utt. He also said he'd heard no one liked me at Luther College.2 | |

| Death* | 17 Dec 1933 | Lyons, Walworth Co., Wisconsin, Obit: Death of Charles EL Stubbs Charles H. Stubbs, a resident of Lyons since 1886, died Sunday mornIng, December 17, 1933, at the age of 79 years, after an illness that confined him to his bed for more than two weeks. Mr. Stubbs was born June 24th, 1854, at Winterport, Waldo county, state of Maine. He was the son of John and Hannah (Hardy) Stubbs, and was of English and Welsh ancestry, and was a descendant of General Israel Putnam, of Revolutionary fame. It was in October 1866 that Mr. Stubbs came with his parents to Wisconsin, locating at first In Porter township, Rock county, and the family lived there two years. They then came to Clinton where they lived until 1869, in which year they came on to Walworth county, locating at Darien township. After living here until 1878 they moved to Spring Prairie township and located in the village, and at this place the parents spent the rest of their lives. Mr. Stubbs lived at home until 1881. In 1872 he had begun to work at the butter and cheese factory at Aliens Grove, which work he followed successfully for about 40 years. In 1878 he came to Springfield and for a short time ran the factory there, and from there he went to Spring Prairie, where he had charge of the factory for three years. Mr. Stubbs also ran a factory at North Geneva and Elkhorn. In 1886 he came to Lyons and took charge of the factory here. He owned the same up to 1908 and made a great success of IC as he had done with all the factories with which he had previously been connected. He then sold out and retired from the manufacturing of dairy products. In the spring of 1911 he bought the general store at Lyons of G. G. Reeves, taking charge the first of June. He conducted this store and for many years enjoyed a large and rapidly growing trade with the surrounding country. Mr. Stubbs was an enterprising business man and a public-spirited citizen of Lyons who led a life consistent with the principles of time-tried ethics, so that he held the good will and the confidence of all with whom he came in contact. Mr. Stubbs was married on June 24, 1879, to Nellie Dyke of Spring Prairie. She died December 7, 1917. Two children were adopted by them Daisy 0. and Wallace W. Stubbs. On January 14, 1919, he was married to Clara Hubbard Dyke of Troy Center. He is survived by his wife and his two children, Daisy and Wallace both of Milwaukee, one grandson, Kenneth Stubbs; one sister, Mrs. Clara Stubbs, and a niece, Mrs. Olive Hughes, both of Elkhorn. The funeral was held at 1:30 from the home and 2 o'clock at the M. E. church on Tuesday, with Masonic services in charge of the Elkhorn Lodge No. 77 F. & A. M. of which he was a member. Interment took place in the Hudson cemetery in the family burial lot 2 |
