From notes of Lorraine Jacobs: John's wife Dorothy and Mary Thorene met while working at the Sawyer House, the present Lowell Inn in Stillwater. they were ice skating on the river one winter, John saw her and had to meet her. John followed her home, thought she was cute. Uncle John's son was a dentist in Duluth. Had 7-8 in the family. One daughter Eleanor, 2 boys and 2 girls (( don't know if that is what she had, or what) Dinah Rudeen????

THORENE, John, age 48, 5003 Otsego st, died Nov 5 at his home following a short illness. Mr. Thorene was born in Sweden and came to the United States 47 years ago and has lived in Duluth since 1918. Surviving are his wife; two dauthers, Eleanor and Edna; two sons, John and Sherman, all of Duluth; four brothers, Rev. Hugo Thorene, Wendle [sic], Joseph and Tore; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Van Tassel and Mrs. Mary Nord, and his mother, living at Manitoba Junction, Minn. funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Bell Brothers' Funeral Home. The body will be taken to Manitoba Junction Tuesday for burial.

JOHN THORENE, DALE FARMER, IS DEAD

Mr. John Thorene, passed away at his home in Duluth Saturday afternoon after an illness lasting about three months. Medical aid was sought and every thing that loving hands could do was done to restore him to health but to no avail.

Mr. Thorene was born in Smaland Sweden, Mar 31, 1927 and passed away Nov. 5, 1927 at the age of 48 years, 7 months and 5 days.

Mr. Thorene was united in marriage to Miss Dorothy Erickson, at Winnipeg Junction, Oct 27, 1909. This union was blessed with five children: Two have preceeded their father in death, namely Sherman and their first born babe.

He, with his family, lived at Brainerd for a whle, coming to Duluth nine years ago and this has been his home since.

Those left to mourn a kind and loving husband and father are the widow, Mrs. Dorothy Thorene, three children Elenore, Edna and John. A mother, aged 88 years at Stillwater. Four brothers, Rev. Hugo Thorene and Wendell of Minneapolis, Joseph [sic] and Tony [sic] of Stillwater. Two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Van Tassel of Minneapolis and Mrs. Marie Nord of Hudson, Wis., many other relatives and a host of friends.

Mr. Thoren [sic] was a true and faithful husband. During his sickness he experienced a true conversion and regeneration, and boldly testified of the grace and saving poer of Christ being fully resigned to God's Will and way of dealing with him. "But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethern, concerning them wich are asleep that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. for if we believe that Jesus died and rose again even so then also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him." 1 Thess. 4, 13-14.

Mrs. Thorene is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Erickson of Dale and the funeral was held at the Mission church of Dale. Interment was made in the church yard cemetery.

DROPPED DEAD LAST NIGHT
Nelson P. Thorene, a Farmer Living Near Stillwater, dies of Heart Disease.
Nelson P. Thorene, living on White Bear Road about a mile and half from Stillwater, dropped dead of heart failure last evening at 5:15 o'clock, while engaged with his oson in puting up ice. He complained of not feeling well and sat down on a piece of ice for a few moments. He resumed work but immediately sat down and fell over dead.

The deceased was born June 4, 1841, in Sweden. On Sept. 15, 1866 he was married at Smoland, Sweden, to Miss Christian Anderson, who with two daughters and five sons survive. The children are Joel, Tore, John and Wendell who reside here; Rev. Hugo Thorene of North Easton, Mass.; Mrs. Theo. Van Tassel, Mrs. Fred Nord, who reside near this city. Funeral announcment later, awaiting the arrival of the son from Massachusetts.

The funeral of Mrs. Thorene was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Swedish Lutheran Church, Rev. C.E. Benson officiating. There was a large attendence of friends and the floral tributes were many and beautiful. Internment at Fairview cemetery. The pall bearers were Chas. Boo, Chas. Thelander, Chas. Peterson, Will Van Tassel and Chas. Johnson.^2,26,16,6

Seth Benjamin Thorene, 28 years old, died at the home of his parents north of Stillwater today as a result of an accident last Friday night when the car in which he and two companions were riding crashed through the wooden rails of a bridge spanning the Rum river near Mille Lac. Thorene died from pneumonia which set in after he was taken to his home.

His companions were William Sempel, Arthur Johnson, Lewis Van Tassel and Howard Powell. Sempel is in Lakeview Memorial Hospital now, suffering fractured ribs, an injured spine, and a chill. His condition in considered serious. The other three escaped without serious injury or result.

Thorene was born at the farm home of his parents and has lived there continuously; he served in the World war.

Surviving are his parnets, Mr. and Mrs. Joel Thorene and eight sisters, Mrs. Theodore Johnson, Lindstrom; Mrs. H. Carlson, Withrow; Rachel, Diana, Irene, Jennie, and Alice, all at home. Funeral arrangements have been completed.

The young man was a member of the American Legion Post 48, of this city, and took active part in Legion affairs. He had many friends in this city and throughout the northern portion of the county who join with the family in sorrowing.¹

Wendell Thorene

Funeral services for Wendell Thorene of rural Stanchfield were held on Saturday, Feb. 1. the services were held at 1:00 p.m. from the Rock-Randall Funeral Home with Rev. Lowell Anderson officiating. Vocal selections were by Lawrence V. Olson accompanied by Mrs. Lowell Anderson. The pallbearers were Orville Hultgren, Clyde Moeschler, Burton Okerlund, John Coolidge, Conrad Eidem and Morris Holm, with interment in the Rice Lake Cemetery at Braham.

Wendell Thorene, son of Nels and Christina Thorene was born on Sept. 22, 1886 at Stillwater, Minn.

He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Stillwater. He also attended school there and grew to manhood.

They made their home in Minneapolis and Thorene worked as a painter. He also was in the restaurant business in Minneapolis, Stanchfield and Grandy. In 1948 they moved to a farm in rural Grandy, where they have since lived. On Jan. 14, he entered the Memorial Hospital for a few days and was then taken to the Cambridge Nursing Home, where he passed away on Thursday, Jan. 30, age of 88 years, 4 months and 8 days.

He is survived by his widow, Adina; several nephews and nieces, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceeded in death by his parents four brothers and two sisters.^2,8,15

Former Local Resident Dies at Home Near Luck

Mrs. Zippora Thorene Johnson, a former Stillwater resident, died at her home at Bone Lake, near Luck, Wis., Saturday afternoon, June 23, 1934. She has only been ill a short time.

Mrs. Johnson, nee Zippora Thorene, was born in Stillwater November 16, 1891, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Thorene. She was married to Chester Johnson here on January 7, 1933.

Surviving are her husband, her parents, seven sisters, Mrs. Theodore Johnson of Center City, Mrs. Harry Carlson of Withrow, Mrs. F.C. Redman of St. Paul, Rachel, Diana and Jennie Thorene of Stillwater and Mrs. J. Schultz, also of this city.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Trinity Lutheran church, the Rev. Wilbert Benson officiating. Interment will be at Fairview cemetery.

The body will lie in state from noon Tuesday until the hour of service. Friends may call at the Jones Funeral Home until Tuesday noon.^1,4

Biography

Jack Stub: An unknown relationship is that of Uncle Bogie Thorgrimssen, who was an icelander... Stubkjaer is just a shadow in my mind, but Uncle Bogie, Aunt Dora, and their sons, Hans and Goodman are vivid in my memory. Hans frequently stated that DeDe and he should get married. She'd say they were related; he'd say they weren't. Hans was very colorful, and when his visits coincided with those of Gerry, it was great theater. Goodman was on the faculty of the Univ. of North Dakota med. school. During the summer of 1964, I had dinner with Goodman and his wife in Grand Forks. He said Hans was somewhere in Texas.²

It was an unusual event that took place at Soldiers Grove, Wise., 25 June, this year, in that Mrs. Gunilda Reese and her son-in-law, Tollef Peterson, were buried the same day.

Mrs. Reese was the only sister of Mrs. Atley Peterson, and Mr. Tollef Peterson was a merchant until recently in Soldiers Grove. The deceased, Gunilda Forinen, was born in Fortunsdal, Sogn, 22 May, 1839. When she was nine years old, she traveled with her parents and siblings to America, and the family settled in Dane County, Wise., where she grew up. She got married here to Christopher Johnson Reese, and they lived on their farm on the prairie out west for about for about 40 years. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Reese stayed on the farm until all of her children had grown up. She then moved to Montana, where she homesteaded and later lived with her daughter Ella (Mrs. Torger) in Bainville, Montana. She enjoyed good health until her last years, when she got a bad cold and the illness led to Bright's Disease. After suffering for some weeks, she died peacefully in her belief in her Savior 17 June.

The surviving children are: Mrs. Mons Ekum, Cornell, Wisc., Bertha Hooverson McIntosh, Minn. (Mother of the wife of Pastor J. A. 0. Stub), T. C. Reese, Duvall, Wash., Mrs. Tollef Peterson, Belmont, Mont, Mrs. J. G. Aschim, Berthold, N. Dak., Mrs. Ella Torger, Bainsville, Mont., T. R. J. Reese, McIntosh, Minn., and C. R. Reese, Belmont, Mont. All of them were present at their mother's funeral in Soldiers Grove. Two brothers, Ole Torger and Daniel Forinen, and a sister, Mrs. Peterson, as well as 28 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive Mrs. Reese..

At the well-attended funeral, pastors Stephenson and Smeby from Viroqua preached. A telegram just received from Pastor Stub was read. He was in New York and was prevented from participating in the funeral. There were many beautiful flowers and the church was decorated nicely for the occasion.

Her daughter, Mrs. Torger, writes that her mother's last work was planting the gladiolas that she had received from "Decorah Posten". They are now in beautiful bloom, she tells. Mrs. Reese was one of the old subscribers and loyal friends of this newspaper.

Walter E. Torrey was born July 7, 1895 in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota and grew up in the Lamberton community where he attended school and was confirmed.

As a young man Walter moved to Eldridge, North Dakota where he met and married Eunice Sisson whome he married on July 18, 1928.

He managed elevators in Eldridge, North Dakota and Springfield, Minnesota prior to purchasing the elevator in Miltona, Minnesota which he owned and operated from 1938 until the tornado of July 1970 destroyed it.

Walter passed away suddenly Sunday afternoon January 26, 1975 at his home in Alexandria where he had resided with his family since 1951. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice and his six children; Marily (Mrs. Alan Eberlien) of Mineapolis, Minnesota; Louise (Mrs. John Franze) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; George of St. Cloud, Minnesota; Elaine (Mrs. Robert Holmen) of St. Paul, Minnesota; Janet (Mrs. Gordon Fry) of Cyrus, Minnesota; Robert of Richmond, Virginia and fourteen grandchildren.

Walter is also survived by one brother, Fred Schultz of Eldridge, North Dakota and one sister, Emma (Mrs. Gordon Branvold) of Los Angeles, California.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and four brothers.

Funeral services were Wedenesday, January 29, 1975, 11:00 A.M., at Calvary Lutheran Church with Dr. Ervin Malm officiating. The soloist, Mrs. Melvin Mattson was accompanied by Dr. Ivan Hedine.

Honorary Pallbearers were Gunnar Ahlquist, Dr. C.E. Carlson, Edwin Mahlke, Arthur Johnson, Jubert Johnson, Alfred Tetzloff, Clifford Fried.

Pallbearers were Gordon Sisson, Gerald Danuser, Orville Schuett, Lee Temanson, Eugene Vacek, Walmer Erickson.

Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery, Alexandria, Minnesota. Services were directed by Alexandria Funeral Home.

His parents are not identified... but since the 1880 census says that Anna Hooverson is the mother of 8 children, 6 of whom are living, and those 8 children are accounted for elsewhere, Christen appears not to be hers.

Note that in "Tell" or "Hooverson" cemetery, one transcription lists a "Christen G. or O., b. 1869, died 23 ? 1869, son of Charles and Anna.⁷

Born February 3, 1825 in Sune, Norway. Married Christian Hooverson when 16 years old. In 1847 moved to Dane County, Wisconisin with husband and 2 sons. In the early 1850s, moved to Crawford County to farm now owned by Tosten Hooverson. Husband died in 1869. Had 10 children. Two died in infancy. Peter died in 1882 and Nellie died in 1902. Survived by Hoover, Tosten, John Dena, Mrs. T.N. Sime and Mrs. James Dinsdale.^3,10
