Mrs. Ames was the oldest white woman in Minnesota in her residence at the time of her death. [I think this means that she had lived in Minnesota longer than any other white woman]. She came to Minneapolis, with her husband, from Roscoe, ILL in 1851.
The couple first moved into a small house at Ninth avenue and Fifth street south, but a few years later he erected what was then the finest house in town, which now stands on the opposite corner to the old court house, which they occupied in 1857. |

Mrs. Martha A. Ames Passes Away After A Long Illness
Martha A. Ames, widow of Dr. Alfred E. Ames, one of the original settlers of Minneapolis, died at her residence, 3104 Clinton avenue, yesterday morning after a long illness, growing out of a complication of troubles arising from old age. The direct cause of death was neuralgia of the heart.
The funeral will be a private one, from the residence at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. Mrs. Ames was a home woman who disliked show, and at her request the funeral will be a modest one. Rev. Dr. Shutter will preside, and the Gethsamane choir will furnish the music, Mrs. Ames having been a member of that church. Dr. Shutter being one of the old residents and a close family friend, accounts for his selection as presiding minister.
Mrs. Ames was the mother of seven sons, of whom four survive her. They are Ezra B. Ames, living at Osceola, Wis; Curtis B. Ames, Rockford, Minn.; Albert A. Ames, now mayor of Minneapolis, and Fred W. Ames, superintendent of police. Three sons have died, Charles Ames, who died at the age of seven years; Martin, who died in infancy; James A. who died in Fergus Falls, the result of wounds and privation in the army. Mrs. Ames gave four of her sons for the glory of her country, all of them being in the army at one time.
Martha A. Ames was the oldest white woman in Minnesota in her residence in the state at the time of her death. She was a pioneer resident, having come to what in now Minneapolis in 1851 with her husband from Rosco, ill. They were married at Ashtabula, Ohio, her maiden name being Pratt, of the Connecticut family of that name, her birthplace being Meriden.
Her husband died in 1874, after having paassed an eventful life in the city. It was in October of 1851 that Dr. Ames made a claim covering the site of the old court house, 80 acres of which he entered at the land office, the other 80 being entered by his consent by D.M. Coolbaugh.
The couple first moved into a small house at Ninth avenue and Fifth street sout, but a few years later he erected what was then the finest house in town, which now stands on the opposite corner to the old court house, which the occupied in 1857. Dr. Ames was the first practicing physician on the west side of the river. He used his land liberally for the benefit of the community, prsenting the city with two lots for a court hourse site, and tow for the First Presbyterian church, of which he was te first elder.
Dr. Ames was one of the first representatives the territory sent from this locality, was one of the chief delegates to the constitutional convention and held the position of postmaster for some time. During all this active life Mrs. Ames shared in his triumphs, and was one of the leading women of the day. She survived to die at the ripe old age of 83 years.5,6,7 |

RAGAN-HOLCOMB Popular Young People United
A very pretty home wedding was solemnized by Rev. James M. Hamilton on Tuesday evening, November twelfth, nineteen hundred and twelve, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Holcomb, when their daughter Marie was united in marriage to Dr. Will Emmor Ragan, bot of Hebron.
Just preceding the ceremony Miss Edith Holcomb sang "Oh, Promise Me," accompanied by Miss Lula Shade. At eight o'clock Lobengrin's Bridal March was played by Miss Edith Holcomb, and the bridal couple came down the stairs and took their place before a dainty bower of ferns, smilax and white chrysanthemums. The color scheme of green and white was carried throughout the beautiful rooms.
The bride was charming in a dress of white crpe __ over messaline, with trimmings of silk shadow lace, and she carried a shower bouquet of bride's roses and swainsonia. Her going-away gown was a tailored suit of tan whipcord. The groom wore conventional black.
Mrs. D. Ima Shade received at the door, assisted by Marie and Clara Talbott. Mrs. Taylor Wilson sang "There Let Me Rest," accompnaied by Mrs. Roy Lockwood and Miss Mary Collins. Mrs. Tullis of Lincon sang several songs during the evening.
Mrs. Talbott and Mrs. keith had charge of the dining room, assisted by Miss Helen Squires. Dainty refresments were served by Misses Gladys Wood, Bess Richards, Carrie Casebolt, Winning Kingsley, Jane Lindsey, Mary Oo___?, Marion Hamilton and Gertrude Squires. Those who pinned the favors on the guests as they left were Mrs. E.E. Correll, Mrs. Cornelius Collins, Mrs. Norton Webb, Miss Minnie Thomas, Mrs. William Boyes, Mrs. Arthur Wagner, Miss Mary Conddington and Miss Emma Lawler.
The guest book was in charge of Lula Shade, about eighty being present. The out-of-town guests were the groom's mother and brothers, Mrs. Ragan, Mr. Dayton Ragan, and Mr. Floyd Ragan, from Utica: his cousins, Mr.s and Mrs. E. O. Tullis of Lincoln; his sister Mrs. W.P. Yoho, husband and son Darwin, from Eagle; and the brid's cousin, Miss Minnie Thomas, of Geneva.
Many beautiful gifts testified to the esteem in which these popular young people are held wherever known. Dr. and Mrs. Ragan_ to Beelvidere and took the night train, expecting to spend a week visiting in Omaha, Lincoln, Utica, and Eagle. After Ded. 15th they will be at home to their many friends in the cottage just east of the Methodist parsonage.
The JOURNAL joins with hosts of well-wishers in extending congratulations.; Principal=Marie R. Holcomb2 |
