George W. Ayer Dies; Buried At Verona Tuesday

George W. Ayer, Verona, passed away Dec. 15th at a Madison hospital, having been ill ten days with heart trouble. Funeral services were held at the Verona Baptist church Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock with burial at Verona, the Rev. Mr. Doody officiating. Masonic services were held at the grave.

Mr. Ayer was born in Lodi June 15, 1861, the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. My. Ayer, early residents of this vicinity. In fact, Mr. and Mrs. Ayer were the first couple married in West Point. As a young man, Mr. Ayer learned the telegrapher's trade, going to Verona as telegrapher Dec. 31, 1884. He has been there as C. & N. W. agent since then.

On Aug. 10, 1887, Mr. Ayer married Louie E. Lamont, daughter of the Thair G. Lamonts, also early settlers in this vicinity. Three children were born to them: Mary, wife of E.C. Trumpf, Madison, Forrest, Chicago, and Ruth, Detroit, Mich.

Besides his wife and three children, he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Ayer Hubbard, Minneapolis, and Mrs. Nellie Ayer Storms, New York City, and a brother, Horace M., in Montana.

Mr. Ayer united with the Verona Baptist church Jan. 28, 1900. The Rev. Mr. Doody, who officiated at the funeral, was pastor of the church several years before going to Waupaca and was a personal friend of Mr. Ayer.

Lodi people attending the funeral were H.C. Lindsay, G.E. Bissell, Mrs. Sadie Simons, and Mr. and Mrs. C.B. McIntosh. Mrs. Elizabeth Foote went to Verona a few days before. Madison Knight Templars and other Masonic groups attended in a body.10,7

Biography* According to Bev McLaughlin (see Schuknecht e-mail) Horace was born at St. Armands, Mississquoi Co., Quebec, Canada. According to the 1880 Columbia Co. History, he was born in Vermont. Bev explained to Schuknecht that the border betweeen VT (East Berkshire) and Freligghsburg/St. Armand Canada is an area of about 4 miles... so the family could well have been back and forth.

Note there are variations in the records on how this last name is spelled: Ayer, Ayers, and even Air

In the 1860 US Census for Lodi, Columbia Co., WI - H.M. Ayres is listed as a Merchant, with real estate valued at $4,000 and a personal estate valued as $2,000. Although his place of birth is listed as "Canada" in this census... other records indicate that he was born in Vermont.

History of Columbia Co., Wisconsin, 1880, Biographical sketches in the Town of Lodi:

Horace M. Ayer. Police Justice and Justice of the Peace. Lodi; was born in Vermont in 1822; he removed from Vermont to Sauk Prairie, Sauk Co., Wis., in 1843; came to Columbia Co. in the fall of 1846, and settled in what was then Sec. 19, town of Lodi, now West Point. He resided there till the spring of 1851, when he came to the village of Lodi; he engaged in the mercantile business till 1871; was Postmaster from the spring of 1853 until the spring of 1861; he has been Justice of the Peace since 1852, except two years, when he refused to serve as such. He was married to Sarah A. Rider, who was born in Ashtabula, Ohio in 1827. They have had nine children, eight of whom are living - Edward A., Delia, Minnie, Susie, Douglass, George W., Horace M. and Nellie; the oldest son, Albert H., died suddenly in Denver, Colo., April 16, 1880 in his 31st year.

Nellie Storms to Will Hubbard: You have reason to be proud of your Grandfather Ayer for he played a very important part in the early history of Wisconsin. When your Uncle Frank and I went to California we called on an old neighbor that had lived just down the street from our house. His name was John Foot (His daughters brought him in and he greeted us with, "so this is little Nellie Ayer)" He said he had been down to the Wisconsin river when the Ryder family got off the boat. He had seen them at prayer meeting back in Ohio when my mother had come in church with the family. In 1851 your grandfather left the farm, and bought lots in Lodi. He built a store and a house next door to it and commenced merchandising. He was elected justice of the peace in 1851 and held that office as long as he lived. Many a couple were married in our front parlor and many law suits were held in his office that joined the house. He was postmaster from 1853 until 1861 under the adminstration of Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan. He was very devoted to his Baptist church and the Masonic Lodge. With our large family and many friends that were always with us, I wonder how mother & he could do it. There was nearly always a guest at our table and it was an open house to the whole community. During the time of depression when men were without work or money it was very annoying to us children to have a tramp brought in to eat with us. I am making too long a story of this, but you should be very proud of your grandfather and grandmother too for her part was not too easy. I have made a long story of this - but the half has not been told.

H.M. Death*3 May 1895 Lodi, Columbia Co., Wisconsin; Obituary in the Lodi Enterprise, May 10 1895:

A PIONEER RESIDENT GONE

H.M. Ayer, One of Lodi's Oldest Settlers, died last Friday.

About 9:30 o'clock last Friday, May 3, H.M. Ayer dropped to the floor in the old Excelsior mill, where he was at work storing cutters for the summer months. Two men - George Reese and James Fairman - were working with him at the time, and after moving Mr. Ayer to the doorway of the building, Mr. Fairman hurried up town for medical aid. Dr. H.J. Irwin was soon examining the body of the stricken man, but no trace of life could be found, death having been instantaneous. It was but a few moments after death came to Mr. Ayer that a large crowd had gathered, and in a very short time the sorrowful tidings was spread throughout the community where the deceased had for so long a time made his home. The sad news caused a pall of sorrow and gloom to spread over the village, for not a man was better known than the deceased. He was on friendly terms with everybody, and was respected by both young and old.

A coroner's jury was summoned and an inquest held, the verdict being that death came from an attack of apoplexy, resulting from heart disease."

H.M. Ayer was one of the pioneers of Lodi. He was born at St. Armand, Canada, March 19 1822 and came to Wisconsin in 1843, locating on Sauk Prairie near Honey Creek. In 1846 the deceased move to West Point, where he resided until 1851, when he removed to Lodi and engaged in mercantile pursuits, carrying on a dry goods business for twenty years. In 1871, owing to a misrepresentation in regards to business matters, Mr. Ayer met with financial reverses, losing a large amount of money. For forty-three years the deceased held the office of justice of the peace in Lodi.

Mr. Ayer became a member of Lodi Valley Lodge No. 99, F.& A.M., December 16, 1858, and for a long term of years had held the office of secretary in this lodge. He was also an old member of Perseverance Lodge, I.O.G.T, and was a charter member of the Lodi Baptist Church.

Deceased was united in marriage to Miss Sarah A. Ryder, October 4, 1848, who, with eight children, survive to mourn the loss of a kind husband and a most affectionate and indulgent father. The children are Edward Ayer, of California; Douglas Ayer, Lodi; George Ayer, Verona; Horace M. Ayer, Jr., Omro; Mrs. F.V. Hubbard and Miss Sue E. Ayer of Waseca, Minn; Mrs. Nellie Storms of Hunter, N.D., and Mrs. George L. Chaffee, of Lodi. All the children were present at the funeral except Edward Ayer and Mrs. Nellie Storms.

The funeral was held from the late residence of Mr. Ayer at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, and from the Baptist church at 2 o'clock, Rev Abbott assisted by Rev. Bowman, officiating at the services. Large delegations of Masons from Poynette and Prairie du Sac were present. The interment was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, and was conducted by the Masonic Lodge. A large concourse of friends were present at the last sad rites, thus showing the respect and esteem in which their fellow townsman was held.

They sympathy of the entire community goes out to the sorrowing relatives in their bereavement.4,14,6,19

Biography* According to great-grandaughter, Alice Hubbard Liptak, Minnie's "real" name was "Mirinda." I have only seen it as "Minnie" in the printed records encountered so far. Dx

According to the 1900 US Census (Redwing, Goodhue Co., MN) Minnie was born in September 1857 in WI. Her father was born in Vermont, her mother in Ohio. Minnie's sister, Susie Ayer was living with them at the time of the cenus. Susie was born in March 1865 in WI and was employed as a teacher.

Her death certificate lists her father as Hiram Ayer (born WI) and her mother as Sarah Ryder (born WI). Other accounts list her father as Horace and list birthplaces other than WI. The informant was William A. Hubbard (her son). Minnie's place of residence at the time of her death was 2208 Harriet Ave., Minneapolis, MN.

Obituary appearing in the Minneapolis Tribune, Monday, October 5, 1936:

MRS. MINNIE AYER HUBBARD.

Mrs. Minnie Ayer Hubbard, 80, of 2208 Harriet avenue, resident of Minneapolis since 1902 and a former school teacher in the state, died unexpectedly Sunday at Franklin hospital.

Mrs. Hubbard was born in Lodi, Wis., and came to Minneapolis in 1902. She taught school for a number of years. Her late husband, Frank B. (sic) Hubbard, was formerly superintendent of schools in Redwood Falls, Waseca and Red Wing.

Mrs. Hubbard is survived by four sons, Stanley E., Will A., Harlow H. and Francis C.

Services will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday at Central Lutheran church with the Rev. J.A.O. Stub, pastor, officiating, and burial will be at 2 p. m. at Oakwood cemetery in Red Wing. The body will lie in state at the church for 30 minutes before the services.

==========
Jim McGovern (of Minnie Ayer Hubbard and her sons after the death of her husband in Red Wing):

They moved to the Twin Cities in 1902, shortly after Frank's death and from the records must never have unpacked their things as they moved from location to location, sometimes twice in one year.

Their first Twin Cities residence, interestingly enough, was at 1521 University S.E. in Minneapolis, not far from where The Old Man chose later to build the present KSTP studios.

In 1904 they were off again to 628 14th Avenue S.E. where they stayed, until 1910. But from 1910 on it was one continual move. In 1910 Minnie and the boys were living at 2122 Knapp St. in the St. Anthony Park district of St. Paul - but the same year moved again to 828 S.E. in Minneapolis.

In 1911, Minnie moved out to Centralia, Washington to live with Will, but that same year she was back at the Knapp Street address. In 1912, the Hubbards were at 701 Laurel in St. Paul. In 1913 at 961 Selby. In 1914 at 1936 Roblyn. And in 1914, 17 year old Stanley was not in school. He had dropped out and was a salesman for the Merritt J. Osborn Company at 675 Dayton, a distributor of water boilers and doorbells….

In 1915 the Hubbards disappeared somewhere. But in 1916 we find them at 2545 2nd Ave. S, Minneapolis with Stanley again listed as a salesman. In 1918 Minnie moved to 254 Wheeler, St. Paul.

It was at this point that Will Hubbard took the family to Louisville….

When they returned to the Twin Cities in late 1922, Minnie was on the move again. In 1922 the Hubbard family was living at 3319 Blaisdell while Stanley was reported as a salesman for the Haynes Company, another doorbell company, and listed as residing at "Seton L.M."

But in 1924 Minnie finally found a place where circumstances permitted her to stay until she died October 4, 1936 - 500 West Franklin Avenue, Minneapolis. The Franklin Avenue address was also reported to be the first "studios" of WAMD. In 1924 Stanley was living there and a salesman for the Geneva Heater Company. In 1925 and 1926, the same.

Nuptials. Hubbard-Ayer
One of the most delightful events in the history of Lodi, occurred at the Baptist church on Tuesday evening last, in the public celebration of the marriage of Prof. F.V. Hubbard, of Redwood Falls, Minn., and Miss Minnie L. Ayer, one of Lodi's choicest daughters.

This is the bride's native village, and her cheerful disposition, coupled with a circumspect life, had won for her a host of friends who seemed to vie with each other in trying to make the occasion one to be long and pleasantly remembered, an effort to which nature lent aid by making Tuesday one of the brightest and balmiest of the season. A public invitation having been extended to the friends, the response was most hearty, and long before the appointed hour, the church was filled. Promptly at eight o'clock the bridal party, consisting of the bride and groom and four attendants, viz: Misses Sue Ayer and Grace Richards and Messrs. George Ayer and H.N. Simons, entered, and passed up the aisle, responsive to the music of Mendelssohn's Wedding March - Mrs. T.E. Lewis, of Baraboo, presiding at the organ - taking their places under the florally decorated arch.

Rev. S.S. Utter, the Baptist clergyman, quickly and gracefully sanctioned the plighted vows, and welded the marriage bonds nevermore to be severed. Then followed congratulations, warm, cheerful, and abundant.

The bridal party then repaired to the home of the bride's parents, where a reception was tendered the relatives; but the after-supper chat and merry songs must be cut short, for the train was approaching which was to bear away the newly married couple on their bridal trip.

We must not fail to speak of the floral decorations, which were elaborate and beautiful, and though arranged by members of the church where the marriage took place, great credit and thanks are due members of other churches, who so cheerfully and generously contributed plants and flowers. Indeed, the lavish kindness of friends has signally marked the whole affair, and Minnie cannot fail to go to her new home with sweet memories of her last days in the home of her childhood.; Groom=Frank Valentine Hubbard10,11,12,13,14,15,16

Note*21 Mar 1944 Letter written by Nellie Ayer Storms on March 21st 1944 to her nephew, Earl Ayer Chaffee. The original (as of 2004) is in the possession of Earl's granddaughter, Judy Mastin of Orange, California. This letter was made from a copy of the family record of Horace Mitchell Ayer and was made by Horace for his daughter, Nellie, before she was married. Horace Ayer's record, itself, is, in part, a copy of the record made by his grandfather, Samuel Rogers.

Judy Mastin says that her mother came into possession of this family history because her mother was visiting her father, Earl, when it arrived in the mail from his Aunt Nellie. Apparently there was also a "cover letter" from Nellie that has been lost, but which Judy's mother believes may have contained information on the most recent generation of Ayers.
