| Death* | 27 Aug 1896 | Warren, Marshall Co., Minnesota, Information from Marshall Co., Minnesota death certificate: Date of death is 27 August 1896. Female widow. Age 69 years, 11 months, 2 days. Born in New York. Cause ofdeath brnchitis. Occupation: housekeeper. Parents are Andrew and Martha, both born in Pennsylvania. Recorded on 7 September 1896. Obituary appearing in the Prescott Journal, 3 September 1896 OBITUARY Died on the 27th day of August, 1896 at her home in Warren, Minn., Mrs. Martha A. Powell, widow of N.N. Powell of River Falls, Wisconsin. Mrs. Powell, whose name was Martha A. Hart, was born at Yates, New York on the 25th day of September 1826. Of her fathers family there now survives only Mr. A.F. Hart, her half brother, a former resident of this city, who now resides at Sauk Center, Minn. The family removed to Indiana when Mrs. Powell was about eight years of age. She had the misfortune to lose both parents in early life and from that time found a home in the family of friends. She removed to Lakeland, Minn. in the the year 1850 and engaged in teaching. Soon after she made the acquaintance of N.N. Powell, the second of the Powell brothers, whos names are so closely identified with the history of this section of Wisconsin. Mr. Powell and Miss Hart were married at Lakeland Sept. 28th, 1852, and immediately after took up their residence in the old Pioneer Store in River Falls. There they resided for a short time until their house, which is now occupied by the family of Judge Weld, could be erected. They lived here, however, but a year or two, before removing to the new house built on the west side, now owned by Mr. Muckenhausen. Four children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy, the survivors being W.N. Powell, a prosperous merchant, and Miss Eva Powell, both of Warren, Minn. About eleven years ago Mrs. Powell removed thither to be with her children and has since made it her home. Mr. N.N. Powell becamse an invalid a short time after his marriage and died at his home in 1862, leaving the care of his young children to Mrs. Powell, a trust which she fulfilled with christian fidelity. She united with the Congregational church of this city in 1857 and has lived a devoted Christian life. There are many women whose chief end seems to be to develop the best character of their offspring, seeking no worldly elevation, careless of those honors and distinctions after which so many seek. They seem to feel, as did the mother of the Graochl, that the jewels best fitting a woman's adorning are her children. Mrs. Powell was emphatically one of these. She found her happiest hours in her family circle. While she also had many warm friends, attracted by her womanly virtues, she mingled little with society, but, with motherly love, devoted her life to the training of her loved ones and to the development of that in their character which she found worthy of her love. In this work she found her consolation for widowhood and her life reward. For around her bedside in her last hours were grouped the faces of those she had tenderly trained; their low voices beat soothingly upon her ears and their caressing fingers eased the pain at her temples. Their very presence softened, though it could not stay, the footsteps of the fleet messenger - the messenger who was to her an angel of light, beckoning to a misty shore above, and in whose voice there was the ring of promised reunions and sweet converse with souls who should "rise up and call her blessed." Her husband having been buried in Greenwood Cemetery in this city, her remains were brought here on Saturday last accompanied by her son and daughter and brother and the funeral held in the afternoon at her former home, now occupied by the family of Allen P. Weld, Esq., many of her friends being present. Rev. C.H. McIntosh conducted the funeral services and a select choir sang appropriate hymns, after which many carriages wound their way to the quiet Greenwood where, beneath the trees planted by oldtime friends, the sacred remains were laid away beside those of her husband.1,3,8 |

He was a man of highest character and kindliest disposition, deeply beloved by his family and held in profound affection by a host of friends. Mr. Hunter was born in Canada April 15, 1834. When he reached his majority he came to Minnesota, locating on a farm near Northfield which he conducted for several years. Then he returned to Canada and engaged in the lumber business for two years, after which , in 1865, he came to Steele county where, on December 18th of that year, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Naylor. Mr. and Mrs. Hunter have made their home on the farm in Merton ever since, with the exception of a few years spent in Owatonna. Their golden wedding celebration in 1915 was a great event in the neighborhood. Besides the faithful partner of more than half a century's joys and troubles, Mr. Hunter is survived by nice children as follows: Mrs. W. H. Powell of Warren, George F. and Floyd Hunter who live in Montana, Charles W. Hunter, Miss Cora Hunter and Mrs. G.W. Cutshall of Rochester, Mrs. C.O. Mann of this city and J.E. and David Hunter of Merton. All these, excepting George Hunter, were at their father's bedside when he breathed his last. Father is George Hunter of Canada. Mother is Elizabeyth Naylor of England. Informant is Winthrop N. Powell of Warren, Minnesota. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery on 9 January 1919. 52 years, 2 months, 28 days. Obituary which was published in the Warren Sheaf, Marshall Co., Minnesota: SHE IS PROMOTED. Mrs. W.N. Powell, One of Warren's Noble Pioneer Women, Passes Away Suddenly. Mrs. Jessie Elizabeth Powell, the beloved wife of Mr. W.N. Powell, died at her home in this city on Monday, Jan. 6, 1919, at one o'clock p.m. aged 52 years, 2 months and 28 days. The final summons came suddenly to Mrs. Powell. To her family and friends she appeared to be in her usual good health and no one had any apprehension that her life hung on so slender a cord. While she was dressing herself on Monday morning , after having risen later than usual, she fell unconscious to the floor in her bedroom. Son Allan, who was upstairs, heard his mother moan and hastening down stairs found her lying on the floor by the bed. Medical assistance was summoned, but she was beyond the reach of human help and passed away at one o'clock without regaining consciousness. Mrs. Powell was born in Merton township, near Owatonna , Steele county, Minnesota, on Oct. 8, 1866. Her maiden name was Jessie Elizabeth Hunter, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. George Hunter, highly respected pioneer residents of said county. She passed her girldhood days on the fam and was given an excellent education. In 1887 she came to Warren to visit relatives and teach school in the A.P. Frank district, south of town. She was married to Mr. W.N. Powell at Warren, on Oct. 10, 1888. To this union has been born four children whose names are as follows: Miss Ina Powell, who is teaching at Fergus Falls; Lieut. Goerge N. Powell, in the U.S. army, stationed in Texas; Laura, now Mrs. G.G. Grunert, of Perham, Minn., and Allan W., who is at home. These children and the father are all left to mourn the loss of a good and affectionate wife and mother. Other immediate relatives of the deceased are as as follows: her aged mother, of Owatonna, Minn., her brothers, George F. Hunter, of Froyd, Mont.; Dave R. Hunter, Frank Hunter, Charley Hunter, and John E. Hunter, all of Owatonna, Minn.; and her sisters, Mrs. C.O. Mann of Owatonna, Minn.; Miss Cora Hunter of Rochester, Minn., and Mrs. Glynn W. Cutshall, of Rochester, Minn. Mrs. A.P. McIntyre, of this city is an aunt of the deceased on the father's side and Mrs. A.W. Wallace, also of this city, is an aunt on the mother's side. Mrs. Jessie E. Powell was a highly gifted woman. Together with a brilliant mind she possessed also those moral graces and virtues that are an adornment to her sex and point to lofty ideals of womanhood. In this city where she has lived all her married life she has taken an active interest in every movement for the moral and cultural advancement of our citizens. She has been the president of the local W.C.T.U. from the time the society was organized, we believe, until her death, and as a temperance worker she has done much to make Warren a dry town and a better place in which to live. She has served as president and secretary of the Ladies Reading Circle and always took a great deal of interest in the doings of this society. She possessed a literary and poetial turn of mind. Frequently she added to the enjoyment of social occasions by her original contributions, both in prose and poetry. She was Worthy Matron of the Eastern star. By her noble and useful Christian life Mrs. Powell has left a lasting impress on the community life of this city, and her name will long be held in loving rembrance. The sorrowing husband and children who have been deprived of her genial companionship and guiding hand, have sustained a loss that is irreparable. May they, and all who mourn, find comfort in the assurance that the departed has been promoted to the more perfect life in the mansions of the blessed. "They are not dead Whom the Father has taken, Tenderly cared for, Nor lost, nor forsaken; Sweetly they rest, Whom the morning shall waken"1,13,14,2 |
