| Death* | 8 Oct 1916 | Warren, Marshall Co., Minnesota, From death certificate: Born on Dec 13, 1838 in Maine. Died on October 8, 1916, in Warren, Marshall Co., Minnesota. Cause of death is cancer of the gall bladder and liver of 4 months duration. Contributory causse: gall sones of unknown duration. Physician is G.S. Wattam (her son-in-law). Her father is listed as William Sherburne of Maine. Her mother is listed as Phoebe Potter of Maine. Burial is in Warrent, Minnesota on October 9, 1916. Obituary published in the Warren Sheaf on 11 October 1916: A Gentlewoman Passes Away. Mrs. Rhecordo White died after a short and apparently painless illness at 2:00 o'clock on Sunday morning, the span of her life being nearly 78 years. Mrs. Rhecordo White was born (of New England parentage) at Bangor, Maine, Dec 13, 1838. She moved with her parents to Wisconsin when thirteen years of age and was married to Charles S. White of River Falls, Wisconsin, on May 2, 1858. They resided near River Falls, Wisconsin until 1879, when they moved to Polk county, Minnesota, where they lived on a farm until 1894, in which year they came to Warren. Deceased was mother of five daughters only one of whom, Mrs. Ruth Shaw, survives. Her husband, Charles S. White died in Warren in 1896, since which time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Shaw, or with Dr. Wattam. Mrs. White is survived by an only brother, Jackson Sherburne, of Clarkston, Washington. She is also mourned by daughter Mrs. Shaw, her grand children, Mrs. George G. Johnson, of Thief River Falls, Miss Anna Shaw, and Charles, William, Harry and Kenneth Wattam, by Dr. Wattam, husband of a deceased daughter, and by a large circle of friends. Deceased was a member of the Eastern Star and under the auspices of that order the funeral was conducted on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, from the home of Dr. Wattam. Rev. L.W. Barthalow preached a short sympathetic sermon in which he alluded to the noble womanly virtues and Christian character of her who had passed away. Her life was gentle and full of human sympathy and love. The handsome casket was weighted down with a profusion of beautiful floral tributes, that attested the love and esteem in which the departed was held by those who knew her best. At the grave the Eastern Star lodge conducted the services according to the ritual of the order, consigning to Mother Earth the mortal remains of Grandma White. Her gentle and unselfish life will always remain a memory sweet to those who learned to know and to love her. "When I've gone the last mile of the way, I will rest at the close of the day; And I know there are joys that await me When I've gone the last mile of the way." Obituary published in the Warren Register on 12 October 1916: Mrs. Rhecordo White, of this city, died early Sunday morning of disease of the liver, after a short and apparently painless illness. She was born ag Bangor, Maine, Dec. 13, 1838, and had nearly completed her 78th year of life. She was the daughter of William and Phoebe Sherburn, also natives of Bangor. When 13 years of age she moved with her parents to Wisconsin, and it was at Clifton, in that state, that she was married, on May 2nd, 1858, to Charles S. White, who died in Warren just twenty years ago. In 1879, she and her husband moved to Polk county, Minnesota, and resided on a farm until 1894, in which year they came to Warren. She was the mother of five daughters, only one of whom, Mrs. Ruth Shaw, of this city, survives. Since the death of her husband in 1896, she has resided with Mrs. Shaw or her son-in-law, Dr. G.S. Wattam. She is survived by six grandchilden, Mrs. Geo. G. Johnson, Miss Anna Shaw, and Charles, William, Harry and Kenneth Wattam, and an only borhter, Jackson Sherburne of Clarkston, Wash. Funeral services were held at the late home of the deceased Monday afternoon, Rev. L.W. Bartholow conducting the services. A burial service was also conducted by the local Eastern Star chapter, of which she was a member. "Grandma" White, as she was universally known was beloved by everyone. Her cheerful disposition and genial manner endeared her to a host of friends, and especially in the home that will now feel her presence no more.5,3,4 |

| Death* | 17 Mar 1934 | Warren, Marshall Co., Minnesota, Obituary published in the Warren Sheaf (Marshall Co., Minnesota) on 21 March 1934 Dr. G.S. Wattam, Pioneer Watten Physician, Dies Noted Medical Man and Civic Leader Completes Useful Life in Warren Saturday FUNERAL SERVICES HELD HERE MONDAY Schools Close, Business Suspends In Respect to Pioneer Who Came To City in 1884. Dr. George S. Wattam, 77, pioneer Warren physician and civic-leader and known throughout Minnesota for the part he has played in the improvement of public health, passed away quietly at his home in this city Saturday morning at three o'clock. The good doctor had not enjoyed robust health during the past few years and about two months ago was confined to his bed, where daily he grew weaker and weaker. The story of the venerable doctor and civic leader's life is almost a complete history of Warren and Marshall county. Coming, as he did, to Warren in 1884 as a young physician he had heeded the call of the country doctor for nearly 50 years, administering to the sick whether rich or poor to bring health and happiness to the people. Dr. George Samuel Wattam was born in Prince Edward county near Picton, Ontario, on July 10, 2856. He received his early eduation in he schools at Belleville, Ontario and graduated from the Medical college of the University of Ontario in 1884. Following his graduation in May, 1884, the doctor heeded the call of the west and made a trip to Texas, but finding the climate not to his liking he came north, arriving in Warren on Aug 21, 1884 and immediately engaged in the practice of his profession which he continued until about two years ago when old age made it necessary for him to retire from active work. On December 21, 1887, Dr. Wattam was married to Miss Emily L. White of Angus, his wife passing away in this city on April 28, 1902. Four sons were born to this couple, namely, Charles C. and William E. of Fargo, Harry E. and Kenneth of Flint, Michigan. These boys together with a sister, Mrs. Emily Coon of Petersborough, Ontairo and Dr. Wattam's sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Shaw, who has kept the doctor's home since the passing of Mrs. Wattam, survive him. Early in his practice of medicine, Dr. Wattam acquired an insight into the inroads which that ravaging disease, tuberculosis, was making in the mortality of our people and commenced an intensive study of ways and means for the prevention and cure of the disease. On May 3, 1901, the local doctor with Dr. H. Longstreet Taylor of St. Paul, and Dr. James C. Camp of Brainerd were appointed by Governor H.H. Van Sant to investiage the advisability of establishing and locating a sanatorium for consumptives. As a result of this investigation and the persistance of the late Andrew Grindeland, then senator from this district, the legislature in 1903 passed an act providing for the establishment of the first sanitorium at Walker. Governor VanSant then appointed the local doctor as a member of the Walker Sanatorium commission for a four year term and was reappointed to the same posisition for a five year term in 1907 by Governor John A. Johnson. Dr. Wattam has taken an active interest in the state of affairs and district medical associations. He served many years in the council of the state medical society, a term as president of the Northern Medical society and as president of the Minnesota Sanitary conference in 1923. He has also been a director of the Minnesota Public Health association, vice-president of the Minnesota Medical association and president of the Red River Valley Medical society. The pioneer physician also served on the executive board of the Warren Hospital association and on his retirement was elected as an honorary advisor. His work is largely responsible for the construction of the local hospital. Civically in his home community, Dr. Wattam was without a peer, being very active in the early day county seat fights, did much to designate the Great Eastern highway, worked on the board of trade in 1896 and has always been an active an energetic member of the Warren Commerical Club. He also served 18 years on the Warren board of eductation, and was a past master of the Warren Lodge No. 150 A.F. & A.M. Out of respect to the passing of the loved physician, Warren's public schools were closed during the entire afternoon and business suspended during the funeral hour through proclamation of Mayor F.C. Larson, Monday afternoon when an impressive funeral was held at the Strand in charge of the Warren masonic Lodge. W.N. Powell [transcriber's note - this is Winthrop N. Powell], past master of the local lodge, delivered the impressive Masonic funeral sermon whil scripture reading and prayer were offered by Rev. E.R. Ingram, pastor of the First M.E. church and Rev. David Samson, former local Presbyterian pastor, now of Gilby, N.D. Judge Bernard R. Brett spoke inspiringly of Dr. Wattam's civic work while Dr. E.A. Myerding, St. Paul, secretary of the Minnesota Medical Society and Dr. W.E. Barnap, Fergus Falls, district council member of the state society, spoke of his influence and work as a member of the medical profession. Musical numbers were given by the Masonic Male Octette and Miss Signe Carlson. Members of the Red River valley Medical society and members of the staff of the Warren Hospital in uniform attended the services in a [?] as did members of the Masonic and Easter[N] Star lodges of this city. Members of the medical profession from out of the city attending the services included Dr. E.N. Myerding, St. Paul. W.F. Burnap and A.C. Baker, Fergus Falls, O.F. Melby and R.C. Bernard, Thief River Falls, M.O. Oppegard, H. Holte, H.F. Nelsen, H. Hodgsen, G. A. Motley and Arthur Kahler of Crookston. Out of town relatives who attended were C.C. Wattam, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. E. Wattam, Mrs. Luella Johnson, Mrs. [?]. N. Powell of Fargo, and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Gullingsrud of Crookston. Honorary pall bearers were A.M. Nilsestuen, W. F. Powell, L. Lambersen, W.N. Knapp, N.N. Harris, C.R. Snyder and W.N. Powell of this city and F.A. Green and John F. Hunter of Stephen. Active pallbearers were F.C. Whitensen, J.N. Odman, J.W. Campton, Dr. F.C. Bakke, F.N. Mattson, and O.M. Mattson. Interment was made at Greenwood cemetery2,7 |

Obituary published in the Warren Sheaf (Marshall Co., Minnesota) on 20 Feb 1896: DEATH OF MR. C.S. WHITE Charles S. White breathed his last at 2 o'clock on Monday morning, Feb. 17, 1896, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.M. Shaw of this city, aged 62 years and a few months. Deceased was born in Braintree, Vermont, on Aug 13, 1833. About 40 years ago he came to River Falls, Wis., where he was married and continued to reside, until about 13 years ago when he and his family moved to the Red River valley, settling on a farm near Crookston. More recently he was the manager of Mr. Winchester's farm at Angus. Mr. White's health had been poor for a number of years. About six years ago he suffered a shock of apoplexy from which he never fully recovered. During his well days he was a man of striking personality, intelligence and force. Since the death of a daughter a little over a year ago, Mr. and Mrs. White have made their home with their daughter, Mrs. A.M. Shaw of this city. Another daughter resides here also, being Mrs. Dr. Wattam. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon from the home under the auspices of the Masonic society, of which deceased was a respected member. The community extend their sincere sympathy to the bereaved widow, her family and relatives. ----- On June 25th, in the same paper, a notice of probate was published which indicated that Charles S. White had died intestate and which mentioned his surviving widow, Rhecordo S. White. ----- Death Notice appearing in the River Falls Journal (River Falls, Wisconsin) on 20 February 1896: Charles S. White, one of the pioneer merchants of this city, died on the 17th inst. at his home in Warren, Minn. He leaves a wife and two married daughters. ----- Obituary published in the Warren Register on 19 Feb 1896: DIED. Mr. Charles S. White died at his home in this city Sunday night aged 62 years. Mr. White was born in Braintree, Vt., and at the age of 22 came out to the west, and finally located at River Falls, Wis., where he was married about 38 years ago. Fifteen years ago he removed with his family to this state and settled upon a farm six miles from Crookston. During the five years immediately preceding his coming to Warren, Mr. White was a manager of the Andrews farm near Angus. A wife and two daughters, Mrs. A.M. Shaw and Mrs. G.S. Wattam, are left to mourn the loss of a beloved husband and mother. The community earnestly sympathizes with the bereaved relatives in this their time of affliction. By request of the Masonic lodge of River Falls, Wis., of which the deceased had long been a member, the Warren Masonic lodge took charge of the funeral ceremonies which were held at the house yesterday afternoon, Rev. Thos. Billing preaching the funeral discourse.6,4,11,5,12 |

Another Good Woman Gone to Her Last Reward Mrs. Emma Wattam, the beloved wife of Dr. G.S. Wattam, died at her home in this city on April 28, 1902, after a lingering illness, aged 38 years 6 months and 6 days. Deceased, whose maiden name was White, was born in River Falls, Wis. Oct 22, 1863. She was married to Dr. G.S. Wattam Dec. 21, 1887. To this union was born four children, namely, Charles, Willie, Harry and Kenneth. She was a kind and affectionate wife and mother. She possessed in a marked degree all the womanly graces and virtues. By her gentleness, kindness and unostentatious manner, she won the love and esteem, not only of her immediate house-hold, but all with whom she came in contact. She leaves to mourn her loss, the husband and four children, also an aged mother and one sister, both residing in this city, besides a large circle of friends and neighbors. The funeral was conducted from the home at 3 P.M. on Wednesday afternoon. There was a service of song, and an impressive funeral discourse by Rev. A.H. McKee, of the M.E. church. The ladies of the Eastern Star, of which deceased was a member, attended in a body. A number of relatives and friends from Angus, Argyle, Bowesmont, N.D., and elsewhere were present. The remains, laid in a beautiful casket, profusely bedecked with nature's choicest flowers, was escorted to Geeenwood Cemetery to rest until the morn of the resurrection. Blessed be her memory. To Dr. Wattam and his four boys, now bereft of a mother's tender care, guidance and affection, this community extends its most heartfelt sympathy.3 |
