(Son of Lyman N and Lucinda E. Taylor Powell)

At River Falls, the 19th instant, Willie Powell, eldest son of Lyman and Lucinda Powell aged 19 years.
In the death of our young friend we are forcibly reminded of the uncertainly of human life. But this is not all. While his family and the community were pressed down with grief and anguish at the recent death of his father, death has again thus suddenly and unexpectedly invaded this peaceful home. A youth in the bright morning of life - full of promise for the future and in whom we were centered all the hopes of a widowed mother and around whom clustered the warmest affections of a devoted group of sisters, is now in one short week stricken down with disease and closes a noble life so well begun. But sorrow must not always brood over the fair forms that drink her warmth. She rises to meet the light of brighter morn on high - She must soar into the fresh empyrean and drink fresh draughts from the cup of Faith and Hope. Through lone ___ be the paths and ___ the bowers be trod, his soul hath gone to its blessed home min heaven.
Then friends unite in this our last farewell _
"Calm on the bosom of God,
Young spirit rest thee now!
Even while with us thy footsteps trod,
His seal was on thy brow" A.M

Rites Are Held Here On Sunday For W.N. Powell

Many Pay Tribute To Pioneer - Resided in Warren Since 1884

Impressive funeral services were held at the First Methodist church in Warren Sunday afternoon for W.N. Powell, 82 years old, pioneer Warren resident, who passed away last Wednesday morning at the home of his daughter in Northfield.

The services were arranged by Warren Lodge No. 150, A.F. & A.M., with Harry Walker, past master of the Stephen lodge, delivering the Masonic funeral oration. Rev. C.E. Haynes, pastor of the church and chaplain of the local fraternity, officiated at the final rites. The church was filled to capacity with friends, relatives, Masonic brothers and Eastern Star sisters who came to pay their last respects to the pioneer.

The pioneer had enjoyed good health until during the summer when he suffered a slight stroke. He suffered a relapse late last fall and was taken to Northfield where he made his home with his daughter Mrs. G.C. Grunert until his passing last Wednesday morning at 2:30 o'clock.

Winthop N. Powell was born August 9, 1860 at River Falls, Wisconsin, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Newell Powell, pioneer settlers of that community. When a young man in 1884, Mr. Powell came to the Red River Valley settling at Warren to engage in the farm implement business in which he was engaged for five years. He later entered into a hardware business which he operated for 14 years. For many years he was engaged in the real estate and insurance business, continuing in the latter until recent years.

Mr. Powell has also been active in affairs of the city and community, serving as a member of the board of education for 15 years and as city recorder for 12 years. He has also served as an alderman and city assessor during his long period of residence.

He was one of Warren's most active Masons, being a member of the local lodge for a period of 50 years. He served as Master of the lodge for two years and for 30 years as secretary. He also served 21 years as Patron of the Warren chapter of Eastern Star. On his 80th birthday, August 8, 1939, the Masons and Stars paid signal honors to Mr. Powell at a dinner in the lodge rooms.

Mr. Powell is survived by two daughters, Mrs. G.C. Grunert of Northfield and Mrs. M.J. Millspaugh of Arcadia, California; two sons, Allan W. Powell of Missoula, Montana and Captain Geo. N. Powell of the U.S. Air Corps Pursuit Squadron, and 13 grandchildren. His wife passed away in 1919.

Honorary pall bearers were John E. Hunter and J.J. Sinclair of Stephen, J.S. MacArthur, Dave Bradley, W.F.Tullar, A.C. Swandby, Victor Odman, Dr. F.C. Bakke and Thomas Kershner of Warren. The active pall bearers were Clayton Olson of Argyle, J.A. Hilden of Oslo, C.E. Lundgren, P.E. Snyder, E.N. Mattson and R.B. Taralseth of Warren.1,2,4,3,5

Biography* From "Shaw A Genealogy of John Shaw and Mary Burrell" compiled by Daniel Turner 1973 and updated (CD only) by George Hayward:

My grandmother told me that her youngest brother, Abner Shaw, left home when he was very young. She had a picture of him as a young man. That picture is reproduced on p 499 of the Photocopy Section. She knew also that he had married a girl named Ruth White. This last fact was confirmed in Uncle Norris's family papers. Beyond this, we have no knowledge of Uncle Abner.

Obituary published in the Warren Sheaf on 11 October 1916:

A Gentlewoman Passes Away.

Mrs. Rhecordo White died after a short and apparently painless illness at 2:00 o'clock on Sunday morning, the span of her life being nearly 78 years.

Mrs. Rhecordo White was born (of New England parentage) at Bangor, Maine, Dec 13, 1838. She moved with her parents to Wisconsin when thirteen years of age and was married to Charles S. White of River Falls, Wisconsin, on May 2, 1858. They resided near River Falls, Wisconsin until 1879, when they moved to Polk county, Minnesota, where they lived on a farm until 1894, in which year they came to Warren. Deceased was mother of five daughters only one of whom, Mrs. Ruth Shaw, survives. Her husband, Charles S. White died in Warren in 1896, since which time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Shaw, or with Dr. Wattam.

Mrs. White is survived by an only brother, Jackson Sherburne, of Clarkston, Washington. She is also mourned by daughter Mrs. Shaw, her grand children, Mrs. George G. Johnson, of Thief River Falls, Miss Anna Shaw, and Charles, William, Harry and Kenneth Wattam, by Dr. Wattam, husband of a deceased daughter, and by a large circle of friends.

Deceased was a member of the Eastern Star and under the auspices of that order the funeral was conducted on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, from the home of Dr. Wattam. Rev. L.W. Barthalow preached a short sympathetic sermon in which he alluded to the noble womanly virtues and Christian character of her who had passed away. Her life was gentle and full of human sympathy and love. The handsome casket was weighted down with a profusion of beautiful floral tributes, that attested the love and esteem in which the departed was held by those who knew her best. At the grave the Eastern Star lodge conducted the services according to the ritual of the order, consigning to Mother Earth the mortal remains of Grandma White. Her gentle and unselfish life will always remain a memory sweet to those who learned to know and to love her.

"When I've gone the last mile of the way,
I will rest at the close of the day;
And I know there are joys that await me
When I've gone the last mile of the way."

Obituary published in the Warren Register on 12 October 1916:

Mrs. Rhecordo White, of this city, died early Sunday morning of disease of the liver, after a short and apparently painless illness. She was born ag Bangor, Maine, Dec. 13, 1838, and had nearly completed her 78th year of life. She was the daughter of William and Phoebe Sherburn, also natives of Bangor. When 13 years of age she moved with her parents to Wisconsin, and it was at Clifton, in that state, that she was married, on May 2nd, 1858, to Charles S. White, who died in Warren just twenty years ago.

In 1879, she and her husband moved to Polk county, Minnesota, and resided on a farm until 1894, in which year they came to Warren. She was the mother of five daughters, only one of whom, Mrs. Ruth Shaw, of this city, survives. Since the death of her husband in 1896, she has resided with Mrs. Shaw or her son-in-law, Dr. G.S. Wattam. She is survived by six grandchilden, Mrs. Geo. G. Johnson, Miss Anna Shaw, and Charles, William, Harry and Kenneth Wattam, and an only borhter, Jackson Sherburne of Clarkston, Wash.

Funeral services were held at the late home of the deceased Monday afternoon, Rev. L.W. Bartholow conducting the services. A burial service was also conducted by the local Eastern Star chapter, of which she was a member.

"Grandma" White, as she was universally known was beloved by everyone. Her cheerful disposition and genial manner endeared her to a host of friends, and especially in the home that will now feel her presence no more.13,3,4
