Arlington - Trinity Lutheran Church was the scene of the wedding April 12 of Miss Judy Jean Selken, daugher of Mr. and Mrs. Harley A. Selken, Arlington, and John D. Berdahl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Erick J. Berdahl, Newcastle, Wyo. The Rev. Gerald W. Koehler officated at the 3 p.m. ceremony.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Martin Jensen, soloist and Bob Kelleson, organist.

Gwen Wagenaar was maid of honor and Katherine Selken was bridesmaid. Charles H. Fowler served as best man and Mark Berdahl as groomsman.

A reception was held in Fellowship Hall.

The bride is a 1966 graduate of Arlington High School and a January 1969 graduate of Northern State College where she received a two-year secretarial certificate.

A graduate of Newcastle High School in 1965, the bridgerrom is currently serving in the U.S. Air Force.

Mary Jaylene Berg was born on November 7, 1950, in Fargo, North Dakota. She graduated from the North Dakota State University and the University of Kentucky and completed fellowship training in clinical pharmacokinetics at the University of Buffalo, the State University of New York. In 1980, she joined the faculty of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and became, in 1995, the first woman to hold a rank of Professor in that college. Dr. Berg was a leader in the study of gender-related differences in medication response. She served on numerous boards and committees at the Society for Women's Health Research, the National Institutes Office of Research on Women's Health, and the Pfizer Pharmaceuticals's Women's Health Advisory Board. She also held leadership positions in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the Federation Internationale Pharmaceutique (International Pharmaceutical Federation, RP). In recognition of her distinguished career and contributions as a world-wide leader in the fields of pharmaceutical education and women's health, Dr. Berg was introduced into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 1999.

Dr. Berg lived an honorable life and had a great passion for music and art. Her joyful way of approaching life and its challenges inspired her friends and colleagues. Dr. Mary Jaylene Berg's legacy is incomparable and will never be forgotten.

Mary Jaylene Berg

Mary and I met years ago during one of the annual meetings of the Federation Internationale Pharmaceutique (International Pharmaceutical Federation, FIP). Mary was a wonderful colleague and very dear friend whom I had the privilege to work with and share common ideas with on the use of and response to pharmaceuticals in women. In 2002, Mary led a very successful symposium on Sex/Gender Analysis of Medications and the Implications to the Sciences and the Profession of Pharmacy in Nice, France, sponsored jointly by the Academic Pharmacy, Clinical Biology, and Industrial Pharmacy Sections of the FIP. This symposium was the culmination of the work Mary pioneered in this field. It resulted in a significant increase in awareness of the issue and opened a broad array of opportunities for research in the field. In 2003, I invited Mary to join a planning committee in preparation for an expert panel meeting to address "Improving the Use and Safety of Medications in Women Through Sex/Gender and Race/Ethnicity Analysis." Despite her sudden and unexpected illness, May joined the committee and always promptly shared ideas and provided valuable input to the committee's working agenda. Un-fortunately, Mary did not get to see the final product of this effort, but she was aware of it and very excited about having the proceedings of the meeting published by the Journal of Women's Health. Mary's knowledge, enthusiasm, and professional ethics have impacted many lives. Her friendship will be greatly missed. Goodbye, my friend. I will see you later.

Of Iowa City, IA died Friday, October 1, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Memorial Services to celebrate Mary's life will be Saturday, October 9, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at LENSING FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICE, Iowa City. Burial will be at a later date in Fargo, ND.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Society for Women's Health, Washington D.C.; or to A Kentucky Renaissance Pharmacy Museum and Fountain, Inc., Lexington, Kentucky. Memorials may be forwarded to the funeral home, PO Box 167, Iowa City, IA 52244.

Mary was born November 7, 1950 in Fargo, ND, the daughter of Ordean and Anna Skramstad Berg. She graduated from North Dakota State University, the University of Kentucky, and completed her fellowship training in clinical pharmacokinetics at the University of Buffalo, the State University of New York.

Her joyful approach to life and its challenges was an inspiration to her friends and colleagues, and she will be greatly missed. Mary is survived by her father, Ordean Berg and countless friends throughout the world. She was preceded in death by her mother, Anna. Ethelyn Soland, 78, of Dalton, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at Broen Memorial Home.

She was born Sept. 10, 1929, in Minneapolis, to Harry and Borghild (Sageng) Berger. She was baptized Nov. 16, 1929, in Sarpsborg Lutheran Church and grew up in the Dalton area where she attended school.

On Oct. 25, 1947, she married Clarence Soland in Dalton and they made their home near rural Dalton. She worked for the Ashby and Evansville nursing homes and also did housekeeping at the Holiday Inn in Fergus Falls.

She enjoyed gardening and music, especially the music at the Broen Home, visiting with friends and going to Dalton for coffee.

She was a member of Zion-Sarpsborg Free Lutheran Church and has been a resident of the Broen Memorial Home for the past 12 years.

She is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence on Feb. 7, 1989; a son, Charles; and a brother, Robert Berger.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service

Service: 2 p.m. Monday, in the Light and Life Auditorium at Broen Memorial Home, Fergus Falls

Burial: Sarpsborg Cemetery, Dalton
