Obituary published in the Halstad Journal Review on 9 June 1933:
DIED ON WEDNESDAY
Mrs. Tobias Swenson (nee Nelly Sveen) was born in Elverum, Norway on the 8th of June, 1855. Her parents were Gunder and Andrea Sveen. There were six brothers and sisters in the family all of whom are dead with the exception of one borther, Gulbran, who lives in Norway. She came to America in her young womanhood days.
She was united in marriage to Tobias Swenson in the year 1891. They established their home a short distance northwest of Halstatd where she lived on their small farm until her death May 31st. She has been in failing health during the last several years.
Funeral services were held at the Halstad Lutheran Church on Saturday, June 3rd, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, where Rev. Stenson officiated. Many neighbors and friends were present to express their sympathy and love.
She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, Tobias Swenson, who was unable to be present at the funeral services, being confined in a Moorhead hospital with sickness. Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to Mr. Swenson in his sorrow and bereavement. May the love and comfort from God be his.3 |

| Biography* | | Excerpts from the diary of Erick J. Berdahl
Hannah Maria Brandvold Now Mrs. E.J. Brandvold
Now when I have given you a sketch of my Journey through life up to this most eventful stage of getting a partner for life it would be proper and just now to also give a sketch of my lifes partner from her youth. Not having personal knowledge of her Norway home it will be as related by herself and friends.
Hannah Maria Brandvold was born at Brandvold Lille Elvedalen in Østerdalen Norway on July 5, 1848. Her parents name was Halvor and Kari Her Father died before she was born and her Mother and son Knut was left to mourn the loss of their protector and father, and with the expectancy of an increase which came about as above on July 5 1848.
In about the year 1851 the Mother remarried to Lars Brandvold so she got a step Father when she was about 3 years old And a Boy was Born in the Family on Feb 29th 1852 whose name was Albert who later in life became our Brother-in-law by the Marriage of Sister Christi (Later Mrs. Ellef E. Ellefson) in the year 1874, there was another Boy born to them who died shortly after birth.
When Hannah was 8 years old the Mother was taken away by death and the home was broken up, and the step Father with his son Albert after the House and contents was sold left for America and Hannah was taken to Bardo dalen Northland to live with an Aunt who lived in that country of the Midnight Sun.
It can be more easily predicted then written what a sad condition a child of 9 years must have got into with out the soothing presence of neither Father or Mother. And while she was taken to Blood relations they were entire strangers to her at the time.
But the home what she was taken to was a good Christian home where she was reared and nurtured in the Word of God. They had a large family so her help was not needed and as soon as she was old enough to herd cattle they found such places for her so she could make her own living and as years rolled by to make a little more than Board and Clothing.
Her Brother Knut found a home with their Uncle who lived near their birth place. He was known as Very naturally gifted boy and Should have had a chance at School but the means was lacking. It was said of him that after hearing a sermon he would after he came home climb a stump and relate a good part of the Serman, but in place of the chance of going to School he started to learn the Shoemaker trade and became an expert at that work and was busily engaged going from house to house making Shoes until he left for this country in 1867.
Now while the Brother and Sister as hundreds of miles apart they knew of each others whereabouts through correspondence And she could not help but have a longing to get back to her birthplace and especially to se her Brother and at the age of 18 years she decided to make a Visit back home. And after getting their she like the surroundings so well that she did not go back to Northland, but ataid there unitl She concluded to come to American in the Spring of 1871.
On account of her Brother Knut approaching the age of being called on for Military duty back home he Very hastily got ready to Sail to this country and the Sister had not got the fever strong enough to go yet. This was in 1867 so they were separated again until 4 years later when she finally concluded to make the Voyage in hopes of getting together in this country.
So she came as before stated to her Step Father in Fillmore County the same as her Brother had done 4 years before, but when she came he had left for Goodhue County where they had an Uncle and Aunt and with the later was on his way to Otter Tail County and filed on a Homestead and they never met until in 1879 6 years after we had settled in Datota when we placed a cover on a light wagon with a spry young pair of Horses hitched to it, and struck across the unsettled country for Otter Tail Co. where she had her first Visit with her Brother in this country.4 |

| Death* | 13 Jun 1934 | Garretson, Minnehaha Co., South Dakota, Obituary from the Garretson News:
EARLY PIONEER GOES TO HER REWARD By Garretson News
Mrs. E.J. Berdahl who died last week, was among first settlers in this community. Mrs. E.J. Berdahl, one of the oldest pioneers of this vicinity, passed away at her home west of Garretson, Wednesday evening of last week, her death coming without warning. Her passing brings to an end the life of one who had been prominently identified with the life of the community in which she lived since the days of the earliest settlers. Coming here as a bride 61 years ago, she and her good husband made their home all these years on the homestead where they started housekeeping, in the east edge of Sverdrup township. Hannah Marie Berdahl was born at Brandvold, Litlle Elvedalen, in Osterdalen, Norway, on July 5th, 1848, her parents being Halvor and Kari Brandvold. Her father died before she was born and her mother died when she was eight years old.
At the age of 11 years, she was taken by friends to an aunt in Northland, the country of the midnight sun. When 18 years old she came back to the old home in Osterdalen, where a brother was living, and in the spring of 1871 she came to Filmore County, Minnesota. On April 2, 1873 she was united in marriage to Erick J. Berdahl and that same spring they moved to Dakota Territory, locating on a homestead in Sverdrup township, where she has continually lived for the past 61 years.
Mrs. Berdahl has been failing in health the past years, but her sudden death June 13 at 6:15 was a shock to all. She lacked only a few days of being 86 years of age at the time of her death.
She leaves to mourn her departure the bereaved husband, one daughter, Mrs. John Brown Jr. of near Dell Rapids, and one son, Henry on the home place. She also leaves 11 grandchildren, one great grandchild, and a large number of relatives and friends both far and near. She is preceded in death by two sons and five daughters, whom she has now joined in the glory of heaven.
She has at all times during the 60 years been a faithful member of the Norway congregation, was the first president of the ladies aid organized in 1874, and has held places of honor and trust in the ladies aid from time to time during all these years. In 1925 her name was placed on the honor roll. While on the account of old age she was not able to accomplish much the later years, she will be missed by her numerous friends, and especially by those who were near and dear to her.
A short service was conducted at the home Saturday at 1 o’clock by Rev. T.A. Mason and Carl Berdahl sang a solo. At 2 o’clock Norway Church was more than filled with sympathizing relatives and friends. Services were in charge of Rev. T.A. Mason assisted by Rev. Bergsaker of Minneapolis, a former pastor of the congregation. Rev. M.C. Thompson of Emmetsburg, Iowa spoke a few works in behalf of the family. The church was beautifully draped, as requested by the departed one some time before she passed away.
There were many beautiful flowers and donations were given to mission in her memory. The choir sang “Sov I Roe” (Sleep in Peace), Carl Berdahl sang “I’m a Pilgrim” and Mrs. Julian Berdahl sang “There Is No Night There.”
The Pall bearers were Andrew, Ole, Herman and Chris Berdahl, Carl Hermanson and Marcus Berge. Interment was made in Norway Cemetery. “Peache with they dust and blessed be they memory.”11,12 |

KNUD H. BRANDVOLD.
Knud H. Brandvold, a retired citizen of Dalton, Minnesota, is one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Dalton and the man to whom all of the people of this thriving town refer as the real pioneer of the community.
Knud H. Brandvold, a native of Norway, was born on May 11, 1845, and is the son of Halvor Simonson and Kari Avleson. Mr. Brandvold's father died in Norway in 1848. He was a farmer by occupation and spent all of his life in his native country. Both he and his wife were members of the Norwegian Lutheran church. They were the parents of only two children, Knud H., the subject of this sketch, and Hannah M., who was born on July 5, 1848, and who married E. J. Berdahl, of near Garretson, Minnehaha county, South Dakota. They have three children, John E., Carrie and Henry.
Knud H. Brandvold received a common-school education in Norway and, when a lad of fourteen years, began learning the shoemaker's trade. He worked at this trade until he was twenty-two years old and. in 1867, came to America, living for two years thereafter in Filmore county, Minnesota. After two years, he moved to Goodhue county, Minnesota, and in 1871 came to Otter Tail county, Minnesota, where he has lived practically all of the time since.
Upon coming to Otter Tail county. Mr. Brandvold purchased the northwest quarter of section 12, in Tumuli township, a tract of one hundred and sixty acres, which, at the time, was little more than wild land. During the winter of 1883-1884, Mr. Brandvold went to Polk county, Minnesota, where he took a homestead and where he assisted in the organization of a township, which was given his name. A congregation of the Norwegian Lutheran church was also given his name. In the following spring. Mr. Brandvold came back to his home in Tumuli township. During his early days in this county, he was situated about thirty miles from a railroad. In 1879, in partnership with Taral Olson, Air. Brandvold established a store at Dalton. This partnership continued for six months, after which Mr. Brandvold continued for a time as the sole proprietor of the business. Later he took Ole Nelson into the business as a partner and this arrangement continued for four years. After Mr. Nelson retired, Mr. Brandvold conducted the store alone. He retired from business in 1903.
Mr. Brandvold was one of the organizers of the Farmers Grain & Lumber Company, of Dalton. In 1908 he sold his farm to his son-in-law, Senator Ole O. Sageng, who is one of the best-known citizens of Otter Tail county. Since 1908 Mr. and Mrs. Brandvold have lived in Dalton.
Knud H. Brandvold was married to Bertha K. Steien, who died in April 1890. To this union were born three children, Halvor, Oliver and Kari. In July, 1892, Mr. Brandvold was married, secondly, to Maria L. Bakken. Mr. and Mrs. Brandvold and family are members of the Norwegian Lutheran church. Mr. Brandvold has served as secretary of the congregation for a short time. For twelve years he was supervisor of his township, and for twenty-eight years was treasurer of the local school board. Knud H. Brandvold occupies a place in the hearts of his neighbors and fellow citizens second to no other citizen in this part of Otter Tail county. He has well performed his duties as a public-spirited and useful citizen and today is accorded the distinction which belongs to such a man and such a citizen. |
