Mr. Kvarnes had been ill but a few days, having taken to his bed March 11 with a cold, later developing pneumonia. Mr. Kvarnes had also been a sufferer from diabetes for several years. Louis Kvarnes was born in Norway on March 28, 1866 and was nearly 53 years of age. He grew to manhood in Norway and at the age of 20 years immigrated to America and settled in Hudson, Wis., where he was employed for several years as an expert carpenter in the Omaha railroad shops, later moving to West Duluth, where he was employed until he came to Two Harbors 23 years ago, at which time he entered the employ of the D. & I.R. in the car shops. Seven years ago he was appointed grocery buyer and bookkeeper for the Scandinavian Co-operative Mercantile Co., which position he held until his death. He was united in marriage at Hudson, Wis., on June 1, 1894, and to this union were born three children, two of whom survive - Florence and Mabel. The eldest daughter, Inga, died about five years ago. Besides his wife and children he leaves two brothers, Ingmar Kvarnes of Hudson, Wis., and Olof Kvarnes of St. Paul: one sister, Parnellia Kvarnes of Seattle, Wash., and two nephews, Olof and Erick Kvarnes, of this city. Mr. Kvarnes was a member of Two Harbors Lodge No. 155, I.O.O.F., and the Rebekah lodge, also of the Sons of Norway. The last sad rites were held today from the residence on Eighth avenue at 2 o'clock and from the Norwegian Lutheran church, of which he was a member at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. K.P. Carlson, pastor of the church, speaking in Norweigan, while Rev. J.R. Davies, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church, spoke in English. Interment was made in the Two Harbors cemetery. The relatives from out of town who were here to attend the funreal were Mr. and Mrs. Ingmar Kvarnes, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Lomnes and John Kvarnes of Hudson, Olof Kvarnes of St. Paul and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Howe of Superior. The pall bearers were Leonard Stube, H.E. Olson, Chas. Schiliberg, Anton Rietan, L.R. Erickson and Harry Bangsund. In repsect to the deceased, the retail stores of our city were closed today from 1 o'clock until 4 to allow all to attend the funeral. The merchants met at the E.A. Daniels corner and attended in a body. The relatives have the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement.7,8,5,2 |

Mother is Maren Tollefsdotter from Klavolden, Norway. Wife is Anna Kvernes (63 years old). Informant is Alfred Kvernes of Renville. Occupation is farmer. Obituary published in the Renville Star Farmer on 4 May 1944: Prominent Farmer Passes On Guren Kvernes Who Had Been in Failing Health For Some Time Died April 24 Another of Renville county's prominent citizens has been summoned to lay aside all earthly cares and duties and go to that Eternal Rest which awaiteth all. On Monday morning, April 24th at 11:15 o'clock, Guren Kvernes passed away at his farm home near Renville at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 9 days. Although he had been in poor health for over three years, he was always about and faithfully performed his duties to the best of his ability both in his home and in the various orgnaizations in which he took part. During the past summer, his condition became critical and since that time he has been constantly under medical observation, being in the hospital at St. Paul different times. Although everything was done to give him strength to overcome his afflictions, nothing seemed to help and so he was summoned into the Eternal Rest where weary souls know no more of pain and suffering and to dwell in the House of The Lord forever. During all these long hours of sickness he was ever cheerful and patient and put his trust into the hands of the Lord to grant him the relief from pain and suffering which no human hands could do. His greatest comfort was his knowledge of the Goodness of God and the beauty of that Eternal Life with God in the Heavenly Home above. Guren A. Kvernes was born in Ytre Rendall, Norway on December 15, 1865 of parents Andreas Johnson Kvernes and Maren Tollefsdotter. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed by the Rev. P.P. Stromme in the year 1881 in Norway. He was a self-educated man being able to attend schools but very little. In the year 1884 he immigrated to the U.S. of Ameria and came to Sacred Hearth, Minn. on July 3rd the same year. Here he resided for 10 years. In 1894 he moved to Town of Crooks, north of Renville and engaged in farming. On July 12, 1899 he was married to Anna Hanson and together they have made their home on the farm, where they now lived, for the past 43 years. To this union was born five children. His wife and two sons, Alfred and Theodore and two daughters, Gudrun (Mrs. Orville Kundson) and Inez (Mrs. Robert Albrecht) remain to mourn his departure. One son, Martin, preceded his father in death in 1924 at the age of 21 years. He is also survived by four granddaughters and two grandsons who were his greatest joy in his last years. To a niece, Mrs. Art Schiemo (Mildred Hanson) who made her home with the Kvernes family following her mother's death in 1924 remains a beautiful and cherished memory of a kind and understanding fatherly love and christian guidance shown her by the departed during the years spent in his home. His only sister, who remained in Norway, and his half-brother G. Agre of Sacred Heart also preceded him in death as had his parents. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, April 27th at 1 o'clock from the First Lutheran Church of Renville with Rev. A. E. Strom officiating. The pallbearers were: Juren Raske Sr., August Johnson, Henry Brummer, P.J. Bottge, Hans Berger and H.J. Robertson. The floral tributes were many and beautiful and mission gifts, given in his memory, were large, which shows the dear departed what a true friend of all who knew him. He was a faithful servant, not only of the Lord, but also of his fellow men. Though very weak often, he would not shirk his duties but tried to take his part in the duties to be performed, until he was forced to withdraw. During the last months it became necessary for him to cast off a part of his burdens that he might retain his weakening strength by resigning from the many public offices to which he had repeatedly been re-elected to servethe public. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Renville Coop. Creamery Association and of the Renville Coop. Shipping Association, District Director of the Federal Land Bank, vice President of the First Lutheran Church of Renville and served as supervisor of the Town of Crooks for three years and then as Town Clerk of Crooks for 26 years. He also held office as School Clerk of District 140 for 35 years resigning in 1942. In all these capacities, it can be said, he performed his duties with a just and understanding mind to the very best advantage of his fellow citizens. His pleasure in life was to serve others and try to do his part to improve political and economic conditions for the common people of his country. His hobby in life was reading good books and papers. Relatives and friend who attended the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Albrecht, Evelyn and Keith and Mr. and Mrs. Art Schiemo and Charles of Minneapolis, Juell Hanson of Duluth, Mr. and Mrs. John Lanning and Mr. and Mrs. M. Lanning and family of Montevideo, Mr. and Mrs. Ludvig Agre, Nels Agre, Mrs. Thorsrud, Mrs. Thora Frank, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hanson, Marvin Agre, Mr. Myra and C.M. Agre of Sacred Heart, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Agre, Glen Agre, Harry Knudson and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Brecke of Olivia, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Dusterhoft and family of Minneapolis, Joe Nelson of Hector, Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Wulf of Willmar, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Trulan of Milwaukee,Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Elroy Lippert and James of Blomkest. His many friends who favored him with cards and vists during the days of his last illness brought him much joy and comfort. To the dear departed, whom we honor, we bid our last goodbye and it is with glory to God we say: Safe in the arms of Jesus - Safe on His gentle breast - There by His love o'ershaded Sweetly his soul shall rest. | Death* | 1 Apr 2008 | Chris Jenson Health and Rehabilitation Center, Duluth, Saint Louis Co., Minnesota, Obituary published in the Fergus Falls Daily Journal on 25 April 2008: Odin Langsjoen, 84, whose Norwegian and Swedish ancestry dates back to the late 1800s near Dalton, always cherished his ties to Otter Tail County up until the time he died on April 1. Even though he left Fergus Falls at age 9, and had a distinguished career in dentistry and academia, his wish was to be buried near Dalton. Langsjoen, whose daughter, Linnea Hagemeister, is retiring this spring as a music instructor at MSCTC, Fergus Falls, long ago selected Sarpsborg Cemetery, Dalton, as his final resting place. His father, Nels, served as president of Northwestern Academy, which later became Park Region Luther College, Fergus Falls, during the 1920s and 1930s. The family, including Odin, moved to St. Peter in 1933 where Nels became an instructor at Gustavus Adolphus. “His family’s move to St. Peter came in the middle of the Great Depression,” his daughter Linnea said. “My father had seven siblings, so he became well grounded. Their large house and adjoining orchard became a family focal point for many years.” Odin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, earning a Purple Heart in the Battle for Okinawa. After completing dental school he and his wife, Mavis, settled in St. Cloud where Langsjoen began 17 years of dentistry in private practice. They had two children, Linnea, and Erik, an orthodontist who now practices in St. Cloud. In 1961 Langsjoen began teaching at the University of Minnesota, where one of his memorable students was Fergus Falls dentist, Yvonne Hanley. He finished his career as a full professor in 1989 at the School of Dental Hygiene, University of Minnesota, Duluth. Langsjoen served as president of the St. Cloud Dental Society in 1955. Later on he served as president of the Minnesota Dental Association and president of the American College of Dentists. He never really did retire, in the true sense of the word. Langsjoen became involved in the dental ramifications of Paleopathology, where his adventures earned him the nickname "Indiana Odie." He and Mavis worked in the mummy fields of Chile and the Canary Islands. Langsjoen became an author on the scientific study of mummies, along with his close friend, Dr. Art Aufderheide. "We grew up hearing dad's tales of Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, their house on East Channing Avenue, spending summers at the Dalton farm and riding the ‘Pelican Dinky’ to Pelican Rapids to visit grandma's relatives,” Linnea said. “My brother and I thought Otter Tail county must have been like Neverland.” The man who was born May 6, 1923, in Fergus Falls, was eulogized by former students, colleagues and friends all across the nation following his death. In the end, coming home to be close to his heritage in Dalton became his final journey. Obituary published in the Duluth News Tribune on 5 April 2008: Odin Monroe Langsjoen Odin Monroe Langsjoen. Born on May 6, 1923, on the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Monroe Doctrine, Odin Monroe Langsjoen was the third son of eight children in the family of Nels P. Odin Monroe Langsjoen. Born on May 6, 1923, on the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Monroe Doctrine, Odin Monroe Langsjoen was the third son of eight children in the family of Nels P. Langsjoen and Alma W. Matson. He passed away almost 85 years later, at an age long predicted by him in lighter moments, in Duluth, Minnesota, on April 1, 2008. His death can be attributed to long term sequelae resulting from a head injury sustained while following his passions for dentistry and academia which led him to do research on mummies in the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. Although born in Fergus Falls, hard by the Ottertail River, Odin moved with the family to St. Peter, Minnesota in the summer of 1932 when Nels P. left Northwestern College for a faculty position at Gustavus Adolphus College. The move came in the middle of the Great Depression - times which molded many psyches and was yet, for the most part, mere background noise for the children of that well grounded family. They eventually moved into a large frame house at 410 N 4th and made that house and the few acres of adjoining orchard a family focal point for the next 66 years. A boisterous childhood with seven other siblings was a counterpoint to Odin's academic nature, as he graduated Summa Cum Laude from high school and Cum Laude from Gustavus Adolphus College in an effort that was truncated by World War II. Odin finished college early in order to join the war effort as many did in what has now become known as the "greatest generation". Before deploying to the Pacific as a Lieutenant (j.g.) in the U.S. Navy he returned to St. Peter to marry his college sweetheart, Mavis M. McClure, and the two set off for the west coast to spend a few months together. She followed on land as his ship sailed from port to port from Washington state to San Diego, California. As the executive officer of LCI -775, one of the flagships for the invasion force, he "earned" a Purple Heart in the Battle for Okinawa. He was just 21 years old. Fast forward through four years of dental school with two children, Linnea and Erik. Mavis relates with a smile that Odie at first had to study in the closet of their 10x10 foot trailer and shower and shave in common facilities with his fellow postwar students. After acquiring sufficient seniority they ended their dental school years in a Quonset hut that was more commensurate with their needs. In return for an Army ROTC stipend during dental school Odin joined the Army as a dentist in 1950 and moved his family to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Two years later, after yet another war, they settled in St. Cloud, Minnesota where he began 17 years of dentistry in private practice. To say that dentistry and academia were his passions would be a truism, but those close to him might add, or substitute, athletics (marathons, triathlons, sailing) and forestry. Odin began teaching at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1961 and finished his university career as a full professor in 1989 at the School of Dental Hygiene, University of Minnesota-Duluth. Whether as head of the Department of Dental Anatomy or Director of the School of Dental Hygiene, Odie was universally well thought of, even beloved, by his students. Many dentists in Minnesota have said that they wouldn't be in dentistry today had it not been for Odie. As part of a parallel career in dental politics, Odin began as president of the St. Cloud Dental Society in 1955. He worked tirelessly for the dental profession for the next 30 years, serving a President of the Minnesota Dental Association and President of the American College of Dentists along the road. And what a road it was! In those 30 years he served continually, almost weekly, on committees and programs. The family vacations were planned around national dental meetings. When questioned about this aspect of his life, Odie would often cite the 1967 passage of the Public Water Fluoridation Bill for the state of Minnesota as one of his most useful accomplishments. Retirement was not for 'Indiana Odie' however. He quickly became involved in the dental ramifications of paleopathology and he and Mavis began working the mummy fields of Chile and the Canary Islands. This research was the basis for his chapter in the definitive text in its field, The Scientific Study of Mummies by his close friend Dr. Art Aufderheide. With the finish of this textbook chapter he came to the end of his dental career, but was always available to speak at worldwide continuing education venues about almost any aspect of dentistry: professional ethics, dental anatomy, public health, radiology, dental hygiene, dental education, organized dentistry or general dental care. The circle of life for Odin ends where it began, in Sarpsborg cemetery near Dalton, about a dozen miles from the Ottertail River in Ottertail County, Minnesota. It was there where two immigrant families, one hard-headed and Norwegian and one caring and Swedish came together to create one of Minnesota's best. His casket is hand-made of storm- downed cherry wood from Ottertail County. Odie would have thought that to be a fine place in which to rest after his journey. Odin was preceded in death by his brothers, Per H.S., Sven Verner and Leif R. Langsjoen. Family members include his wife of 64 years, Mavis M. Langsjoen; children, Linnea (Richard) Hagemeister of Ottertail Lake, Minn., Erik (Mary) Langsjoen of St. Cloud, Minn.; grandchildren, Maria K. and Sten O. Langsjoen; step grandsons, Joshua, Ross and Jed Hagemeister; brothers, Arne (Carol) and Ralph Langsjoen; sisters, Gertrude Rodine and Alma (Gerald) Halverson; sisters-in-law, Carol (Marti) Langsjoen, Jean (William) Hogan and Miriam Langsjoen. Memorials are preferred to the Langsjoen Memorial Fund at Gustavus Adolphus College, the Lake Superior College School of Dental Hygiene or Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.1,7,4 |
