Death* | 1 Apr 2008 | Chris Jenson Health and Rehabilitation Center, Duluth, Saint Louis Co., Minnesota; Obituary published in the Fergus Falls Daily Journal on 25 April 2008: Odin Langsjoen, 84, whose Norwegian and Swedish ancestry dates back to the late 1800s near Dalton, always cherished his ties to Otter Tail County up until the time he died on April 1. Even though he left Fergus Falls at age 9, and had a distinguished career in dentistry and academia, his wish was to be buried near Dalton. Langsjoen, whose daughter, Linnea Hagemeister, is retiring this spring as a music instructor at MSCTC, Fergus Falls, long ago selected Sarpsborg Cemetery, Dalton, as his final resting place. His father, Nels, served as president of Northwestern Academy, which later became Park Region Luther College, Fergus Falls, during the 1920s and 1930s. The family, including Odin, moved to St. Peter in 1933 where Nels became an instructor at Gustavus Adolphus. “His family’s move to St. Peter came in the middle of the Great Depression,” his daughter Linnea said. “My father had seven siblings, so he became well grounded. Their large house and adjoining orchard became a family focal point for many years.” Odin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, earning a Purple Heart in the Battle for Okinawa. After completing dental school he and his wife, Mavis, settled in St. Cloud where Langsjoen began 17 years of dentistry in private practice. They had two children, Linnea, and Erik, an orthodontist who now practices in St. Cloud. In 1961 Langsjoen began teaching at the University of Minnesota, where one of his memorable students was Fergus Falls dentist, Yvonne Hanley. He finished his career as a full professor in 1989 at the School of Dental Hygiene, University of Minnesota, Duluth. Langsjoen served as president of the St. Cloud Dental Society in 1955. Later on he served as president of the Minnesota Dental Association and president of the American College of Dentists. He never really did retire, in the true sense of the word. Langsjoen became involved in the dental ramifications of Paleopathology, where his adventures earned him the nickname "Indiana Odie." He and Mavis worked in the mummy fields of Chile and the Canary Islands. Langsjoen became an author on the scientific study of mummies, along with his close friend, Dr. Art Aufderheide. "We grew up hearing dad's tales of Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, their house on East Channing Avenue, spending summers at the Dalton farm and riding the ‘Pelican Dinky’ to Pelican Rapids to visit grandma's relatives,” Linnea said. “My brother and I thought Otter Tail county must have been like Neverland.” The man who was born May 6, 1923, in Fergus Falls, was eulogized by former students, colleagues and friends all across the nation following his death. In the end, coming home to be close to his heritage in Dalton became his final journey. Obituary published in the Duluth News Tribune on 5 April 2008: Odin Monroe Langsjoen Odin Monroe Langsjoen. Born on May 6, 1923, on the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Monroe Doctrine, Odin Monroe Langsjoen was the third son of eight children in the family of Nels P. Odin Monroe Langsjoen. Born on May 6, 1923, on the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Monroe Doctrine, Odin Monroe Langsjoen was the third son of eight children in the family of Nels P. Langsjoen and Alma W. Matson. He passed away almost 85 years later, at an age long predicted by him in lighter moments, in Duluth, Minnesota, on April 1, 2008. His death can be attributed to long term sequelae resulting from a head injury sustained while following his passions for dentistry and academia which led him to do research on mummies in the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. Although born in Fergus Falls, hard by the Ottertail River, Odin moved with the family to St. Peter, Minnesota in the summer of 1932 when Nels P. left Northwestern College for a faculty position at Gustavus Adolphus College. The move came in the middle of the Great Depression - times which molded many psyches and was yet, for the most part, mere background noise for the children of that well grounded family. They eventually moved into a large frame house at 410 N 4th and made that house and the few acres of adjoining orchard a family focal point for the next 66 years. A boisterous childhood with seven other siblings was a counterpoint to Odin's academic nature, as he graduated Summa Cum Laude from high school and Cum Laude from Gustavus Adolphus College in an effort that was truncated by World War II. Odin finished college early in order to join the war effort as many did in what has now become known as the "greatest generation". Before deploying to the Pacific as a Lieutenant (j.g.) in the U.S. Navy he returned to St. Peter to marry his college sweetheart, Mavis M. McClure, and the two set off for the west coast to spend a few months together. She followed on land as his ship sailed from port to port from Washington state to San Diego, California. As the executive officer of LCI -775, one of the flagships for the invasion force, he "earned" a Purple Heart in the Battle for Okinawa. He was just 21 years old. Fast forward through four years of dental school with two children, Linnea and Erik. Mavis relates with a smile that Odie at first had to study in the closet of their 10x10 foot trailer and shower and shave in common facilities with his fellow postwar students. After acquiring sufficient seniority they ended their dental school years in a Quonset hut that was more commensurate with their needs. In return for an Army ROTC stipend during dental school Odin joined the Army as a dentist in 1950 and moved his family to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Two years later, after yet another war, they settled in St. Cloud, Minnesota where he began 17 years of dentistry in private practice. To say that dentistry and academia were his passions would be a truism, but those close to him might add, or substitute, athletics (marathons, triathlons, sailing) and forestry. Odin began teaching at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1961 and finished his university career as a full professor in 1989 at the School of Dental Hygiene, University of Minnesota-Duluth. Whether as head of the Department of Dental Anatomy or Director of the School of Dental Hygiene, Odie was universally well thought of, even beloved, by his students. Many dentists in Minnesota have said that they wouldn't be in dentistry today had it not been for Odie. As part of a parallel career in dental politics, Odin began as president of the St. Cloud Dental Society in 1955. He worked tirelessly for the dental profession for the next 30 years, serving a President of the Minnesota Dental Association and President of the American College of Dentists along the road. And what a road it was! In those 30 years he served continually, almost weekly, on committees and programs. The family vacations were planned around national dental meetings. When questioned about this aspect of his life, Odie would often cite the 1967 passage of the Public Water Fluoridation Bill for the state of Minnesota as one of his most useful accomplishments. Retirement was not for 'Indiana Odie' however. He quickly became involved in the dental ramifications of paleopathology and he and Mavis began working the mummy fields of Chile and the Canary Islands. This research was the basis for his chapter in the definitive text in its field, The Scientific Study of Mummies by his close friend Dr. Art Aufderheide. With the finish of this textbook chapter he came to the end of his dental career, but was always available to speak at worldwide continuing education venues about almost any aspect of dentistry: professional ethics, dental anatomy, public health, radiology, dental hygiene, dental education, organized dentistry or general dental care. The circle of life for Odin ends where it began, in Sarpsborg cemetery near Dalton, about a dozen miles from the Ottertail River in Ottertail County, Minnesota. It was there where two immigrant families, one hard-headed and Norwegian and one caring and Swedish came together to create one of Minnesota's best. His casket is hand-made of storm- downed cherry wood from Ottertail County. Odie would have thought that to be a fine place in which to rest after his journey. Odin was preceded in death by his brothers, Per H.S., Sven Verner and Leif R. Langsjoen. Family members include his wife of 64 years, Mavis M. Langsjoen; children, Linnea (Richard) Hagemeister of Ottertail Lake, Minn., Erik (Mary) Langsjoen of St. Cloud, Minn.; grandchildren, Maria K. and Sten O. Langsjoen; step grandsons, Joshua, Ross and Jed Hagemeister; brothers, Arne (Carol) and Ralph Langsjoen; sisters, Gertrude Rodine and Alma (Gerald) Halverson; sisters-in-law, Carol (Marti) Langsjoen, Jean (William) Hogan and Miriam Langsjoen. Memorials are preferred to the Langsjoen Memorial Fund at Gustavus Adolphus College, the Lake Superior College School of Dental Hygiene or Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.1,7,4 |

Biography* | Family history information provided by Marcella (Westfield) Oellien, Granddaughter of Martinus and Augusta Lien (Lie/Lee) Martinus Martinussen (Hagen) Lien b.Dec 4,1853 d.Oct. 26,1939 Married in Norway to Augusta Andersdatter Bjornstad b.June 21,1865 d.Sept. 22,1890 Martinus" father was Martinus Halvorsen (Hagen) Lien and his mother was Marte Oldsdatter Kynberget. When Martinus came to the USA he changed the spelling to Lie and later to Lee. Martinus and Augusta's first child, Martinus M. Jr (Martin) was born in Norway on July 12, 1888. Martinus came to America the latter part of 1888 or the early part of 1889. Augusta and son Martin came later and their second son was born at Lakefield,MN in January, 1890. Martinus took training for carpentry in Norway. He built houses, depots, churches, schools and farm buildings. They moved to Minneapolis in 1890 and Augusta passed away there on Sept. 22, 1890. She is buried in the Lake Crystal Cemetery at Penn and Dowling Ave N, Mpls. Martinus went by train to North Dakota about 1891. He located at Cooperstown, ND and built churches-two that we known of - Ringsaker Lutheran and Trinity Lutheran. Then he moved to Binford, ND where he built houses and a Lutheran church there. He was one of the first twelve businessmen known as the "Dirty Dozen" of Binford. In 1895 he married Ragnhild M Rosteun who had three sons close to the same age of his son Martin. That same year they moved to Minot, N.D. and built a depot and houses there. In 1905 they had a daughter born at Minot,ND. Son Martin graduated from High School there in 1908 and planned to go to the U of Minnesota at Mpls. Then family moved back to Mpls Their address was 1203 Knox N and he built that house. While living there he made a trip to Burlington, Wash. to build a Great Northern Railroad Co. Station(depot). He was there about 3 months. In 1910 his wife Ragnhild died. July 1911 Martinus’address was 1911 26th Ave N,Mpls- He built a two story schoolhouse. Also in 1911 he built the St Olaf Lutheran Church at 2901 Emerson Ave N., Mpls, MN. This church is still being used. The years of 1916 thru 1919 Martinus and daughter, Myrtle moved to Scotsguard, Saskatchewan, Canada. He homesteaded a one half section of land. He became a citizen of Canada. Never did farm it himself- he had renters. He built a Presbyterian church at Admiral, Canada. Also built schools, farm buildings and houses. 1920 he was back in Mpls and built a three story schoolhouse at Willow River, MN., north of Mpls. 1921 his address was 3203 Lyndale Ave. N. 1933 address was Holland Hotel 908 2nd Ave S Mpls. 1938 his address was 3512 Chicago Ave S. Mpls. 1939 he died at the age of 86 When he went to North Dakota to work in 1891, his second son, Alfred Lee was only a year old and first son, Martin was two and a half so he left them with families in Mpls and planned to come back for them later. When he came back the family that had my dad, Alfred, had put him in an orphanage in Owatonna. He was adopted by Lydia and Kasper Westfield in 1892. They lived at Canby, MN. The orphanage would not tell Martinus where Alfred was living. Eighteen years later the orphanage did get permission from the Westfields and they were able to see each other. Grandpa Lee spent some summers in the 20’s and 30’s at Alfred’s farm. He also made cedar chest, play furniture and other furniture. He had an ink stamp that he marked his books, etc. M.M.
