He came to Minnesota and a short time afterward was joined by his father, B.O. Mellesmoen, who located in Wadena county where he lived until 1911 and since that time has made his home with his son, Ole Mellesmoen. After two years in the new home, the latter helped two brothers to secure their passage to this country. Ole Mellesmoen lived for two years in Ottertail county and in 1883 removed to Polk County, taking a homestead claim on section twenty-three of Brandsvold township [see note below], the southwest quarter. This was timber land and his first home was built of logs cut from the place. To the development of this farm he has devoted the able efforts of many years and has been eminently successful in all phases of his enterpris! e. It is one of the model farms of the region and one of the best locations, being situated on the main road north of Fosston, about three miles from that place. He has put over one hundred acres under cultivation, the remainder being in timber land and in productiveness and equipment the farm can be favorably compared with those in the older and famed agricultural districts of the middle west. He has good buildings, attractively situated in fine natural groves and in 1908, erected his comfortable country home. His farming interests have been directed to the raising of grain and to dairy farming, selling his dairy produce to the cooperative creamery at Fosston. Me. Mellesmoen has been identified with the affairs of the township since its organization and attended the first election which was held in one of the pioneer homes. He was one of the first members of the Brandsvold United Lutheran Church, of which he continues to be a faithful supporter. Mr. Mellesmoen was married in 1899 to Inga Sagmoen, who was born in Norway and accompanied her parents to Polk county in 1881. No children have been born to them but they have taken a girl and boy into their home, Clara, who has made her home with them since her fourth year and is now sixteen years of age and Ole, aged two and one-half years. Mr. Mellesmoen is associated with the business interests of the county as a stockholder in the Cooperative Creamery and in the Farmers Elevator companies in Fosston. TRANSCRIBER’S NOTE: According to a map of Brandsvold Township, Ole purchased the southwest quarter of Section 23, Township 148 North, Range 40 West (Brandsvold Township). |

| Death* | 30 Aug 2001 | Pioneer Retirement Community, Fergus Falls, Otter Tail Co., Minnesota, Clarice Moen Clarice Moen, 86, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Pioneer Retirement Community in Fergus Falls. She was born on March 17, 1915, in Tumuli Township of rural Dalton, the daughter of Peter and Christina (Hegseth) Moen. She was baptized and confirmed in Norwegian at Ten Mile Lake Lutheran Church. She attended rural School District No. 7 and Fergus Falls High School. After high school, she attended Concordia College, Cum Laude, where she majored in English and music. Language studies were a challenge for her. She taught at Cogswell, N.D.; and Cohasset and Esko in Minnesota. Later, she attended the Minneapolis Business College and was employed as a corporate secretary for General Mills for 30 years. She was also a member of the American Association of Business Women. She was a member of Central Lutheran Church and an associate member of the Norwegian Church. At Central Lutheran Church, she was a wedding hostess for 30 years. She also served as an usher, altar guild, and a member of the church choir for many years. She loved music and was an avid opera admirer. She was a chairwoman for the Metropolitan Opera Upper Midwest Tour and she never missed an opera on the Saturday radio. Her opera records were a treasure. She enjoyed traveling with her sisters to Norway, Switzerland and Hawaii. She will be remembered for her love of fashion and beautiful clothes. In December of 1997, she and her sister, Thora, moved to Pioneer Pointe in Fergus Falls to care for their sister, Carrie Moen. Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Palmer and Martin; two sisters, Mildred, who died in infancy; and Carrie Moen, who died in November of 1999. Survivors include two sisters, Thora Lundell of Fergus Falls and Neala Bredahl of Pelican Rapids; a nephew, Paul Bredahl of Maple Grove; and a niece, Shirley Simonovich of Hibbing. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred. | Note* | Info on N.T. Moen's thoughts about an education bill requiring that public schools teach in English: The one significant education bill enacted by the Minnesota legislature of 1919 fell far short of Senator Carley's specifications. Its main provision required the use of English as the medium of instruction in all public schools and in private schools serving in lieu of public schools. Contrary to a widespread impression, this requirement did not apply to part-time congregational schools with programs limited to religious instruction and language instruction as a handmaiden of religion. Nor was the teaching of foreign languages as academic disciplines prohibited, although obviously the climate of the time did little to encourage the introduction or even the maintenance of such disciplines in the secondary schools. In assessing the effect of the education law, Representative Nels T. Moen of Otter Tail county, editor of Fergus Falls Ugeblad and author of the measure, minimized its impact on Minnesota Scandinavians. According to Moen, only two Scandinavian parochial schools offering instruction in secular subjects were employing a Nordic language as the chief medium of instruction. However, he acknowledged that the impact on other ethnic groups would be somewhat greater: there were approximately 350 parochial schools, most of them German, wherein English was not the principal language of instruction, and they obviously would have to change. Moen also disclosed that he had assumed sponsorship of the education bill to avert something much worse. He claimed that a combination of circumstances, including the mood generated by the war and several other factors, such as the Nonpartisan League, had led to powerful support in the legislature for an extremist Americanization program. If some of his colleagues had prevailed, said Moen, "it would have been impossible to publish a single Norwegian paper in Minnesota, conduct religious services in Norwegian, or offer instruction in that language." As it turned out, all the bills to destroy or hamper the non-English press suffered defeat, and no statutory barriers stood in the way of including Norwegian courses in the curricula of public and private schools. In evaluating the session as a whole, Moen declared that the legislature "deserved more praise for what it prevented than for what it accomplished." | |

Moen Dies Very Suddenly Sudden Heart Attack Proves Fatal to Former Member of Legislature and Editor Here Prominent Citizen and Former Judge of Municipal Court - Death Deeply Mourned This community was deeply grieved this morning to learn of the death of Hon. Nels T. Moen, who died suddenly, at his home, 427 West Vernon avenue, at 2 a.m. Death was caused by a sudden heart attack and occurred before a physician could reach him. An attempt was made to resuscitate him, but proved of no avail. Apparently in his usual good health and spirits, Mr. Moen spent [?] day at his farm near Ten Mile on Thursday, where he assisted in [?] a new addtion to the barn. [?] he felt somewhat exhausted and went to his lake cottage to rest up. During the evening he drove back to this city and did not complain of being ill. [?] Moen was well known throughout the state of Minnesota. Always a champion of Prohibition, he took an active part in many political campaigns, and served the public in many positions of trust. Nels T. Moen was born in Freeborn county, Minnesota, May 26, 1834 and was in his 64th year at the time of his death. When a child of two years, Mr. Moen's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tollef Nelson, came by oxteam to Tumuli township, Otter Tail county. That was in 1868, and they were among the first of the county's pioneers. Both Mr. and Mrs. Nelson took homesteads near Dalton. The first public schools Mr. Moen attended was in a dug-out in Tumuli, later in a log house and still later in a frame building. He remained on the farm with his parents until 1893, and after graduating from the Red Wing Seminary, attended the University of Minnesota, where he was graduated from the law department. After graduating from the University, Mr. Moen moved to Norman county. For a time he was principal of the school at Halstead. While acting as principal, he practiced law in the evening. In 1897 he moved to Ada, where he remained for ten years. During this time he served two terms as judge of probate, and was county attorney for one term. In 1907 Mr. Moen accepted the position of state attorney for the Anti-Saloon League, and his work in behalf of temperance is well known. During his entire life he has been a strong advocate of prohibition, and at one time was a candidate for Congress on the Prohibition ticket. When the municipal court was established in Fergus Falls in 1911, Mr. Moen was appointed to the judgeship by Gov. A.Q. Eberhart. later he was elected to the state legislature, where he served the people of Otter Tail county for several years. Last fall he was appointed national census enumerator for the Ninth Congressional district, and was a the time of his death editor of the Fergus Falls Ugeblad, a position he has held for the past eighteen years. Mr. Moen is survived by his wife and four sons. They are Thomas, Milford, Neil, and Caroll. He is also survived by four brothers and three sisters - L.T. Nelson of Tumuli; Ald. M.T. Nelson of Fergus Falls; T.T. Nelson of Fergus Falls; Anton T. Nelson of Provost, Canada; Mrs. Tollef Udbye, of Minneapolis; Mrs. P.C. Swendsrud of Tumuli, and Mrs. Emil Brusven, of Ashby.
