Galen T. Nelson

Elmwood - Galen T. Nelson, 70, Elmwood died Thursday, July 9, 1992, at his home.

He was born Aug. 25, 1921, town of Spring Lake, Pierce County, where he grew up. He was the son of Gustav and Inga (Thompson) Nelson. He farmed on the family farm for several years. He married Muriel Anderson April 8, 1944, on the family farm in Spring Lake. Following their marriage they spent several years in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1953 they returned to the family farm. In 1959 be began construction in the Elmwood area. He also drove school bus for Elmwood school. In 1970 he retired due to ill health.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Karen (Dale) Langness of Stillwater, MN, Gale (Tim) O'Connell of Elk Mound; four sons, James (Mary) of Palmyra, Jeffery (Susan) of Leander, TX, Jerry (Elizabeth) of Spring Valley, Edward (Susie) of Hudson; two sisters, Ruth Swanson of Ellsworth, Esther Lamon of Elmwood; two brothers, Glenn Nelson and John Nelson, both of Spring Valley; 15 grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Elmwood, with Rev. David Bostedt officiating. Burial will be at Spring Lake Cemetery, town of Spring Lake.

Gustav Nelson

Gustav Nelson was born March 27, 1889 in Drammen, Norway of his parents Severreane and Nils Gulbranson. He spent his childhood in Norway, coming to America in 1907, at the age of eighteen.

He made his home with his sister in Ellsworth for a time, then moved to Elmwood where he worked as a blacksmith, operating his own shop for a number of years. He was married to Inga Thompson on September 21, 1915. Two years later they moved to the present farm home. Four children were born to this marriage. She preceded him in death on May 19, 1927.

On Nov. 8, 1930, Mr. Nelson was married to Marie Johnson. One child was born to this marriage.

He died at home on March 12, 1951, at the age of 62 years. He leaves to mourn his wife; five children, Ruth, Mrs. R. G. Swanson of Ellsworth; Esther, Mrs. Arthur Lamon of Elmwood; Galen, of Woodland Park, CO.; Glenn of Spring Lake and John at home. Two sisters, Mrs. Carl Christiansen of Minneapolis and Ingrid Bang of Oslo, Norway; one brother, Sig Gulbranson, of Ellsworth, and nine grandchildren also survive him. His father and mother preceded him in death. His burial took place in Spring Lake cemetery, Friday, March 16, 1951. Carsten Smeby, Pastor.

Martin Nelson Lived Varied, Active Life

Martin T. Nelson, long time respected resident of Fergus Falls who died at the Pioneer Memorial home Saturday at 2:50 a.m. , was born in Tumuli township Nov. 15, 1873. His parents, Tollef and Marit Nelson, were pioneers who immigrated from Norway.

When he moved to Fergus Falls he was a member of Zion Hauge Lutheran church until it united with Our Savior's which later became the Bethlehem Lutheran church. For many years he directed choirs of chuches he attended. He also directed choirs in many rural churches. Throughout his lifetime he held many church offices.

Mr. Nelson's large acquaintance of friends and associates will remember his many and varied interests and activities. He organized and directed the frist city band in Fergus Falls. He was an alderman and was active in civic affairs for many years. He was an ardent hunter and fisherman, took up golf in his fifties and held the city championship several times. He was a member of the board of the Pioneer Memorial home for many years.

As a young adult Mr. Nelson taught school for two years. After the accidental death of his father, he returned to the home farm for a few years. Moving to Fergus Falls, he went into the fuel and monument business with T.H. Thoreson and later with B.L. Molstre.

He then became oil inspector for this area and after some years went into the restaurant business, owning and operating the Nelson cafe, first in the old Riverside apartment building on Washington avenue and later at the present location of the bus depot. For the past several years he had been in retirement with some real estate dealings as a sideline.

Mr. Nelson was married June 27, 1906, to Gena Molden who survives him. To their marriage were born Thomas O. Nelson, local businessman, and Gladys M. Nelson, a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force presently based at San Antonio, Texas. Also surviving him are a sister, Mrs. Arthur (Eline) Molden, and a brother Thore T. Nelson of Minneapolis.

Mr. Nelson's death occurred at 87 after a bed-ridden illness of two years.

Funeral services will be held at the Bethlehem Lutheran church tomorrow at 2 p.m. The Reve. J. M. Donohowe will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at thet Olson Funeral Home.²

Olaf Morgan Norlie¹

Biography* Wikipedia article 11/4/09:

He was born to Norwegian immigrant parents in Sioux City, Iowa. He went on to graduate from St. Olaf College in 1898, completed his Master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1901, then earned his doctorate at the University of Minnesota in 1908. His dissertation was titled The Principles of Expressive Reading, a Study of the Human Voice. He also attended the Norwegian Lutheran United Church Seminary.

He served for eight years as a pastor in the United Norwegian Lutheran Church of America in Minnesota for 8 years. Then he went into teaching, first teaching Greek and psychology at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. He then went on to serve as Dean and professor of Religion at Hartwick College and Seminary. He went on to serve as librarian at St. Olaf College until his retirement. The library at St. Olaf has archival materials from his life and a large collection of his writings.

Due to his interest in statistics, in 1932 he was elected as a member of the American Mathematical Society. He was a member of the American Philological Association and a poet.
